Alimentary tract duplications.

A total of 17 patients with alimentary tract duplications underwent surgery at National Taiwan University Hospital from 1978 to 1994. Fifteen patients (88%) had gastrointestinal duplication and two (12%) had esophageal duplication. Common presenting symptoms of gastrointestinal duplication were melena and abdominal pain. The ileum was the most common site of duplication. Multiple duplications were seen in three patients. All duplications were cystic, except for one single appendiceal duplication. Ectopic gastric mucosa was detected in nine of the 16 nongastric duplications. One patient with il

Malformations associated with congenital absence of the gall bladder.

Thirty-four cases (29 children and five adults) of congenital absence of the gall bladder were found in a retrospective necropsy study. When the distribution of associated malformations in these patients was analysed, the cases were found to fall into several groups. The largest group (13) had multiple anomalies involving the genitourinary (83% reproductive tract, 42% renal), gastrointestinal (46% imperforate anus, 23% tracheo-oesophageal fistula), cardiovascular (54% cardiac defects, 23% single umbilical artery), and skeletal (31%) systems. Eight other patients had predominantly cardiac anoma

[Risk factors for congenital anal atresia].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors for the development of congenital anal atresia in neonates. METHODS: A total of 70 neonates who were admitted to 17 hospitals in Foshan, China from January 2011 to December 2014 were enrolled as case group, and another 70 neonates who were hospitalized during the same period and had no anal atresia or other severe deformities were enrolled as control group. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the risk factors for the development of congenital anal atresia. RESULTS: The univariate analysis revealed that t

Association of Hirschsprung's disease and anorectal malformation: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The association of Hirschsprung's disease (HD) and anorectal malformation (ARM) is rare. The exact incidence of this association is not known but HD coexisting with ARM has been reported in 2.3 to 3.4% of ARM cases. Most of the reported cases in the literature have been single case reports. The aim of this systematic review was to determine the incidence of HD associated with ARM and its relationship to other syndromes. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed for the keywords "association of Hirschsprung's disease and anorectal malformation", "aganglionosis an

Anorectal Malformations: Finding the Pathway out of the Labyrinth.

Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are a complex group of congenital anomalies involving the distal anus and rectum, as well as the urinary and genital tracts in a significant number of cases. Most ARMs result from abnormal development of the urorectal septum in early fetal life. In most cases, the anus is not perforated and the distal enteric component ends blindly (atresia) or as a fistula into the urinary tract, genital tract, or perineum. ARMs are also present in a great number of syndromes and associations of congenital anomalies. The classification of ARMs is mainly based on the position of

Single stage repair of anovestibular fistula in neonate.

Anorectal malformations are one of the most common congenital defects. This study is conducted to evaluate the result of single stage anterior sagittal anorectovaginoplasty (ASARVP) in cases of vestibular anus (AVF) in neonatal age group without thorough gut preparation. All the patients of AVF admitted during 2003-2006 were included in this study. Single stage ASARVP was done in these patients without preparing the bowel in the lithotomy position, the fistula was freed and sufficient length of anorectum was dissected and vagina was separated. Midline incision at the proposed anal site was mad

[Rectum and bladder duplication with malformations of the VACTERL association].

The case of a newborn with duplications of rectum, presenting as a tumor of the labia majora, and duplication of bladder and urethra is reported. In addition malformations from the VACTERL-association (sacral malformation, anal atresia with vestibulum fistula, renal dysplasia, only eleven pairs of ribs with hypoplasia of the eleventh one, diplopodia on the left foot) were found. In the study of urogenital and enteric duplications in cases from the literature this coincidence with VACTERL malformations was found as well.

Covered anus with anocutaneous fistula: the muscular sphincters.

A rare specimen of a covered anus with anocutaneous fistula obtained from a newborn female baby was subjected to macroexamination and microexamination to determine the anatomy of the sphincters and the levatores musculature. The internal sphincter and the deep voluntary sphincters, albeit slightly modified, were well developed but the sphincters in the perineum were absent or rudimentary. The pelvic muscles were present even in the absence of the sacrum up to and including the second sacral vertebra.

Re-routing procedures for ectopic anus in the adult.

Four cases of adult ectopic anus are described. All patients presented with incontinence; in two there was a history of constipation. Electromyography correctly identified the site of the anal sphincters preoperatively. The anorectum was mobilized and re-routed through the sphincter ring with repair of the perineal body. There was improvement in anal canal pressures on voluntary contraction after operation in all three cases studied. Continence was restored in three patients but results were poor in one patient because of persistent constipation. Severe constipation may be a contra-indication

Proximal decompression by tube appendicostomy with pull through procedures in pediatric operations.

The technique of tube appendicostomy for proximal decompression of anastomosis at the anus and colon after pull-through operations in children is described. It has been used in 29 patients with good results without complications and allows for decompression of gas and liquid stool in the immediate postoperative period. It avoids the need for a third operation when used in conjunction with an initial distal ostomy.

Prune perineum.

An infant, born to unrelated parents, who had a rugated perineal mass which measured 17 cm in diameter is reported. No external genitalia or anal orifice was identified although the infant voided from a 5 mm crevice on the caudal surface of the mass. The patient died at four weeks of age. The perineal mass was made up of two separate sacs. The anterior sac resembled a urinary bladder in which two ureteral and a single vaginal orifice were identified. The posterior sac was continuous with the peritoneal cavity and contained bowel, left ovary, uterus and right kidney. The left kidney was small,
