Diffusion kurtosis imaging probes cortical alterations and white matter pathology following cuprizone induced demyelination and spontaneous remyelination.

Although MRI is the gold standard for the diagnosis and monitoring of multiple sclerosis (MS), current conventional MRI techniques often fai … ility to detect both acute and long lasting changes. Interestingly, WMTI-derived metrics showed the aptitude to distinguish between the different stages of the disease. Both the intra-axonal diffusivity (Da) and the AWF were found to be decreased in the cuprizone treated group, Da specifically decreased during the acute inflammatory demyelinating phase whe …

Assessing human-robotic performance for vocational placement.

This paper describes the results of an exploratory study of the use of standard occupational therapy assessment tests to measure the effective manipulation ability of individuals with disabilities using a robotic aid. Robotic manipulators have been explored for use as a vocational accommodation to support the job placement of individuals with severe manipulation disabilities. One of the factors that has impeded the transfer of this work is the lack of practical information that is relevant to the vocational placement process. The preliminary performance data presented in this paper provides an

Dyslexia and developmental co-ordination disorder in further and higher education-similarities and differences. Does the 'label' influence the support given?

Developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD) is a developmental disorder affecting motor co-ordination. The Diagnostics Statistics Manual-IV classification for DCD describes difficulties across a range of activities of daily living, impacting on everyday skills and academic performance in school. Recent evidence has shown that difficulties persist into adulthood. As a consequence, increasing numbers of students are arriving at university and colleges in the UK with a diagnosis of DCD and requesting Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) to gain support. This preliminary study examined a cohort of 11

Cognitive content and process in eating-disordered patients with obsessive-compulsive features.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the schema-level cognitive content and processes that might explain the presence of compulsive behaviours among patients with eating disorders. METHOD: Each of 62 eating-disordered women completed standardised measures of schema-level core beliefs and cognitive processes, and was interviewed for diagnosis and obsessive compulsive features. RESULTS: Compulsive behaviours were associated with four core beliefs--'mistrust/abuse', 'defectiveness/shame', 'dependence/incompetence' and 'subjugation'. Higher levels of avoidance of emotional arousal were also associated

Children with Prader-Willi syndrome vs. Williams syndrome: indirect effects on parents during a jigsaw puzzle task.

BACKGROUND: Genetic disorders predispose individuals to exhibit characteristic behaviours, which in turn elicit particular behaviours from others. In response to the strength of Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and weakness of Williams syndrome (WS) in visual-spatial tasks such as jigsaw puzzles, parents' behaviours can be affected by their child's level of puzzle ability or syndrome diagnosis. METHODS: Children were asked to complete two jigsaw puzzles (one with the experimenter and the other with the parent) for 5 min each. Frequencies of parental helping and reinforcement behaviours, along with

Working memory in children with reading disabilities.

This study investigated associations between working memory (measured by complex memory tasks) and both reading and mathematics abilities, as well as the possible mediating factors of fluid intelligence, verbal abilities, short-term memory (STM), and phonological awareness, in a sample of 46 6- to 11-year-olds with reading disabilities. As a whole, the sample was characterized by deficits in complex memory and visuospatial STM and by low IQ scores; language, phonological STM, and phonological awareness abilities fell in the low average range. Severity of reading difficulties within the sample

Learning disabilities spectrum and sexual dimorphic abilities in girls with congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia could provide a promising model for the study of the effects of hormones on cognition. The aim of this study was to assess sexual dimorphic abilities related to oral language, spatial abilities, and verbal fluency and to determine the existence of learning disabilities in 11 congenital girls with adrenal hyperplasia compared with 11 healthy girls. Both groups underwent a neuropsychological evaluation using the Child Neuropsychological Assessment battery for Spanish-speaking children. Results showed that the congenital adrenal hyperplasia group had a significantly

Language skills and intelligence quotient of protein energy malnutrition survivors.

The study was conducted on 33 children aged 3-6 years who suffered from protein energy malnutrition (PEM) during infancy in comparison to 30 matching children to assess the long-term deficits in cognition and language skills. The patients' files were revised to record their admission and follow-up data and history, clinical examination, intelligence quotient and language assessment were done. The study revealed that 2-5 years from the acute attack the PEM patients were still shorter than the controls and their cognitive abilities were poorer. Their mental ages and language skills were mostly d

Effectiveness of a computerised working memory training in adolescents with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a computerised working memory (WM) training on memory, response inhibition, fluid intelligence, scholastic abilities and the recall of stories in adolescents with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities attending special education. METHOD: A total of 95 adolescents with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities were randomly assigned to either a training adaptive to each child's progress in WM, a non-adaptive WM training, or to a control group. RESULTS: Verbal short-term memory (STM) improved significantly from pr

[Reimbursement of opiate substitution drugs to militaries in 2007].

INTRODUCTION: The use of psychoactive drugs by militaries is not compatible with the analytical skills and self-control required by their jo … ss of substitution. His/her different responsibilities of care, but also in determining the working aptitude, lead to dissimulation behaviour by the militaries. The difficulty for military physicians is to identify such consumption. They have to evaluate the capacity to work through a physical and psychological examination.

[SOPESS results and medical recommendations for school beginners].

AIM OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of results of a developmental screening for school entry and procedures initiated by school doctors. METHOD: Based on achievement in SOPESS of 372 children (188 female, 184 male) and the resulting recommendations of the school doctors, the distribution of frequencies in cross-classified tables was analysed, and Cramer's V was calculated. RESULTS: No sex differences were found in early numeracy and coordination skills. Girls performed more frequently without any problems in the other domains assessed by SOPESS. Re

Precision livestock farming and integrated molecular profiling reveal heat-stress resilience signatures in Marchigiana cattle.

INTRODUCTION: Heat stress is an increasing challenge for cattle welfare and biological efficiency under climate change. Locally adapted and less intensively selected breeds may represent models for investigating resilience mechanisms, as they may retain adaptive traits useful for the selection of heat-resilient animals. This study characterized the response of Marchigiana cattle, a local Italian beef breed adapted to semi-extensive environments, in comparison with two cosmopolitan breeds with different productive aptitudes, Limousine and Holstein. Precision Livestock Farming, hematological pro…

Stability and change in health, functional abilities, and behavior problems among adults with and without Down syndrome.

Changes in health, functional abilities, and behavior problems among 150 adults with Down syndrome and 240 adults with mental retardation due to other causes were examined with seven assessments over a 9-year period. Adults were primarily younger than 40, the age at which declines begin to be evident in individuals with Down syndrome. Adults with Down syndrome were advantaged in their functional abilities and lack of behavior problems, comparable in health, and exhibited comparable rates of change on these measures as adults with mental retardation due to other causes.
