Arachnoid cysts are rare; they can occur at all levels of the dural sac, and can have a congenital, traumatic, iatrogenic or inflammatory origin. In the present article, we report a patient presenting a compressive thoracic myelopathy due to an unusual intradural arachnoid cyst with posttraumatic manifestation and its resolution, in addition to a literature review on the subject. These cysts mainly occur at the thoracic spine, followed by the lumbar, lumbosacral and thoracolumbar spines. Traumatic cysts are caused by an injury to the inner dural layer. These lesions produce neurological defici

Arachnoid cysts (AC) are reported to have a prevalence of up to 2.6% in children. Most AC remain indolent, but others may expand or rupture to cause life-threatening symptoms of raised intracranial pressure. Currently, there are 2 controversial topics with regards to the management of ACs: the indications for surgery and the choice of surgical procedure. We therein report our institution's neurosurgical experience for symptomatic AC over a 22-year period and corroborate our results with published literature. This is a single institution, retrospective study conducted at KK Women's and Children

BACKGROUND: With a prevalence of 1.4%, intracranial arachnoid cysts are a frequent incidental finding on MRI and CT. Whilst most cysts are benign in the long-term, clinical practice, and imaging frequency does not necessarily reflect this.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted searching the Medline database with MESH terms. This literature was condensed into an article, edited by a consultant neurosurgeon. This was further condensed, presented to the neurosurgery department at Princess Alexandra Hospital for final feedback and editing.
RESULTS: This review advises that asymptomatic pati

OBJECTIVES: the prevalence of intracranial aneurysms and arachnoid cysts is higher in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) than in the general population. A genotype correlation was reported for intracranial aneurysms, but it is unclear for arachnoid cysts. Therefore, the genotype correlation with intracranial aneurysms and arachnoid cysts was investigated in ADPKD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: intracranial aneurysms and arachnoid cysts were screened by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and PKD genotypes were examined using next-generation sequencing for 169 patients w

We present a case of a patient with treatment resistant hallucinatory experiences with incidental finding of an arachnoid cyst localized in the posterior infratentorial cranial fossa dorsally to the cerebellum. Psychological testing revealed significant deficit of cognitive functions to the level of mild intellectual disability in a person that had previously finished high school with good grades. A combination of clozapine and lamotrigine led to significant improvement in mood and reduction of hallucinations, but without improvement in cognitive functions. We also performed a literature revie

The dynamics of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are essential for maintaining homeostasis in the central nervous system. Despite insufficiently detailed descriptions of their structural and molecular properties for a century, cranial arachnoid granulations (CAGs) on meninges have been thought to participate in draining CSF from the subarachnoid space into the dural sinuses. However, recent studies have demonstrated the existence of other types of CSF drainage systems, such as lymphatic vessels adjacent to dural sinus and paravascular space in the brain so-called glymphatic system. Therefore, the rol

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a disorder characterized by long-standing elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). As the name applies, no uniform cause has been identified. IIH is typically characterized by headaches, pulsatile tinnitus, and visual deterioration.
RECENT FINDINGS: Anomalies in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) absorption are implicated in the pathophysiology of IIH. Non-invasive imaging of the brain parenchyma and the cerebral venous sinus has improved, and research has gained a better understanding of the role of cerebral venous sinus stenosis. Both hav

OBJECTIVE: Various techniques have been performed to reduce subarachnoid clotting during aneurysmal neck clipping surgery. We considered that maintaining the physiologic cerebrospinal fluid circulation by performing arachnoid plasty after clipping during surgery would lead to the accelerated clearance of the subarachnoid clot.
METHODS: Patients in a prospectively maintained aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) database at our institution and with aSAH that fulfilled the criteria were selected for this study. The incidence of delayed cerebral ischemia, angiographic vasospasm, 3-month func

Spinal intradural arachnoid cysts (SIACs) are cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sacs formed by arachnoid membranes. They may be idiopathic or acquired. Treatment is resection, fenestration, or cyst drainage. A 41-year-old female patient presented with myelopathy symptoms and complaints. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a T6-T10 dorsal intradural arachnoid cyst. A T6-T10 laminectomy was performed and an arachnoid cyst was excised under surgical microscope. The cyst contained a clear liquid that was surrounded by a transparent membrane. At 7 weeks postoperatively, the patient experienced severe

Although spinal arachnoid cysts are relatively common findings observed incidentally in adults, they are much rarely reported in children. They are usually asymptomatic and are mainly located in the middle and lower thoracic regions. However, in rare circumstances, these cysts can cause mass effects that lead to neurologic symptoms. We report the rare case of a spinal extradural arachnoid cyst in a 12-year-old boy who showed signs and symptoms of cauda equina syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine revealed a huge extradural arachnoid cyst extending from L2 to L5. Emergent lam

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larvae of the cestode Taenia solium. Ocular parasitosis in humans is well recognized; however, cysticercosis of the optic nerve is rare. Here, we report a case of an adult male who presented with right-sided headache and a gradual loss of vision in the right eye. Optical coherence tomography indicated severe loss of ganglion cells in the right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a predominantly suprasellar cystic lesion thought to represent an arachnoid cyst. We performed a craniotomy to excise the cyst. Histopathological examination of t

RATIONALE: An intracranial arachnoid cyst is a relatively common congenital benign lesion. A small number of patients present with neurological symptoms. Endoscopic fenestration has become a common treatment for arachnoid cysts in recent years, but intracerebral hematoma after surgery is rarely reported.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 60-year-old woman with an arachnoid cyst in the left parietal and occipital lobes showed obvious progressive neurological deficits. She had weakness in her right limbs for 2 years and a sudden convulsion in her left limbs.
DIAGNOSIS: An arachnoid cyst in the left parietal

OBJECTIVEAdult spinal arachnoid cysts (SACs) are rare entities of indistinct etiology that present with pain or myelopathy. Diagnosis is made on imaging studies with varying degrees of specificity. In symptomatic cases, the standard treatment involves surgical exploration and relief of neural tissue compression. The aim of this study was to illustrate features of SACs in adults, surgical management, and outcomes.METHODSThe authors searched medical records for all SACs in adults in the 10-year period ending in December 2016. Radiology and pathology reports were reviewed to exclude other spine c

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common parasitic infection of the central nervous system but isolated primary spinal NCC is of very rare occurrence. The authors report a case of 44-year-old male, a postoperative case of multiple spinal NCC lesion excision 2 years ago, who presented with cauda equina syndrome and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lesion mimicking an arachnoid cyst in the D1-9 region of the spinal cord. On intraoperative surgical exposure multiple cysts were found and excised. The suspicion of recurrence of NCC was confirmed by histopathology. Postoperatively there was signifi

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts are found everywhere in cerebrospinal axis, most often in the middle cranial fossa. They are very rare in prepontine location.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In this study, we report a 26-year-old female presenting with a 3-month history of headache and diplopia. On physical examination, she had clinical manifestations of sixth cranial nerve palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a prepontine arachnoid cyst with extension into interpeduncular and suprasellar cisterns. Computed tomography scan demonstrated no evidence of hydrocephalus. The patient was treated surgically by e

A 38-year-old woman presented with a 12-month history of subjective weakness and pain in her legs. Thoracolumbar MRI revealed two spinal intradural cystic lesions at T5-6 and T11 levels, respectively. The lesion located at the T5-6 level was heterogeneously hyperintense on T2-weighted images and heterogeneously hypointense on T1-weighted images. This lesion showed high signal intensity on diffusion weighted MRI (DWI) and low signal intensity on apparent diffusion coefficient images (ADC). According to the MRI findings, we reported this tumour as a spinal epidermoid cyst. The pathology result s

To the authors' knowledge, most of intracranial arachnoid cyst located in middle cranial fossa and lateral fissure cistern. So, huge frontal-temporal lobe arachnoid cyst is rare. Symptoms of arachnoid cyst may be atypical, including headache, nausea, vomiting, epilepsy, poor memory, and so on. Of course, migraine related to weariness is a rare benign headache disorder. The authors reported a patient presenting with weariness migraine associated with large frontal-temporal lobe arachnoid cyst.

PURPOSE: Intracranial arachnoid cysts are cystic malformations found in both adults and children. While many are asymptomatic, some cause symptoms and warrant surgical treatment. In this prospective population-based study, we aimed to study the short- and long-term outcome after surgical intervention in children with arachnoid cysts referred to our centre.
METHODS: Twenty-seven pediatric patients (13 f. 14 m, mean age 9.4 years) with de novo cysts were consecutively included during a 5-year period. The presenting symptoms were headache (n = 12), balance disturbance and dizziness (n = 6), seiz
