Reactive arthritis, also called Reiter's syndrome, is the most common type of inflammatory polyarthritis in young men. Elderly-onset rheumatoid arthritis (EORA), defined as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with onset at age 60 years or over, differs slightly at presentation from younger-onset RA (YORA) by a more equal gender distribution, a higher frequency of acute onset with systemic features, more frequent involvement of the shoulder, and higher disease activity. Chlamydia trachomatis infection is now recognized as the most prevalent veneral disease in the Western World. The majority of cases of Reiter's syndrome, one type of reactive arthritis, are secondary to sexually transmitted infections. Twenty-four patients were under observation. It is shown that reactive arthritides requiring surgical treatment are often of Yersinia etiology. A preceding episode of acute diarrhea can be revealed in the immediate anamnesis. Besides affection of the joints, the clinical picture is characterized by protracted high fever, general toxicosis syndrome, enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes, and, occasionally, enlargement of the liver and spleen. An unusual case is described of extragenital Mycoplasma hominis infection presenting as a septic arthritis of the hip joint in a young paraplegic girl. The few reported cases of M. hominis septic arthritis are summarized. A patient with polymyositis of 12 years' duration developed inflammatory polyarthritis confined to the hands and wrists, with erosions and periarticular calcifications. Her joint disease exemplified that of a previously described subset of patients with polymyositis associated arthritis. In this case, calcific material was aspirated from the right long finger proximal interphalangeal joint and the mineral was analyzed and identified as apatite.
