Therapy effectiveness for phonological disorders with different therapeutic approaches.

BACKGROUND: phonological therapy. AIM: to evaluate the effectiveness of three different therapy models regarding changes in the phonological system of subjects with different phonological disorder (PD) severity levels. METHOD: the research group was composed by 66 subjects, 43 males and 23 females, with ages between 4:4 and 8:2 years, who were part of a school clinic database. All subjects were evaluated, before and after a period of 15 to 25 sessions of phonological therapy, using the Child's Phonological Assessment. Based on this assessment, the severity level of the PD was determined usin

Early language development of children at familial risk of dyslexia: speech perception and production.

UNLABELLED: Speech perception and speech production were examined in 3-year-old Dutch children at familial risk of developing dyslexia. Their performance in speech sound categorisation and their production of words was compared to that of age-matched children with specific language impairment (SLI) and typically developing controls. We found that speech perception and production performance of children with SLI and children at familial risk of dyslexia was poorer than that of controls. The results of the at-risk and SLI-group were highly similar. Analysis of the individual data revealed that b

[MRT sequences as a database for a visual articulatory model].

Articulatory models can be used in phoniatrics for the visualisation of speech disorders, and can thus be used in teaching, the counselling of patients and their relatives, and in speech therapy. The articulatory model developed here was based on static MRI data of sustained sounds. MRI sequences are now being used to further refine the model with respect to speech movements. Medio-sagittal MRI sections were recorded for 12 consonants in the symmetrical context of the three point vowels [i:], [a:] and [u:] for this corpus. The recording-rate was eight images/s. The data show a strong influence

Theories of developmental dyslexia: insights from a multiple case study of dyslexic adults.

A multiple case study was conducted in order to assess three leading theories of developmental dyslexia: (i) the phonological theory, (ii) the magnocellular (auditory and visual) theory and (iii) the cerebellar theory. Sixteen dyslexic and 16 control university students were administered a full battery of psychometric, phonological, auditory, visual and cerebellar tests. Individual data reveal that all 16 dyslexics suffer from a phonological deficit, 10 from an auditory deficit, four from a motor deficit and two from a visual magnocellular deficit. Results suggest that a phonological deficit c

Delayed closure of the hard palate: a comparison of speech in children with open and functionally closed residual clefts.

The speech of 20 children with cleft in the hard palate that had not yet been repaired was evaluated and analysed at 7 years of age. The cleft in the hard palate was open in 14 patients and functionally closed in six. All children were born with cleft lip and palate and treated surgically according to a routine that included delayed closure of the hard palate until age 8-10 years. The soft palate was repaired at approximately 6-8 months of age. Tape recordings were used for perceptual analysis of the speech. Maxillary casts were used to assess approximate age for functional closure of the resi

Linguistic abilities in children with Williams-Beuren syndrome.

In recent studies children with Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) have been characterized as having a distinct neuropsychological profile with verbal abilities being superior to visuo-spatial and motor skills. An unusual command of language, including excessive use of verbal stereotypes, social phrases, and clichés has been noticed. The aim of this study is to establish whether the quality and quantity of verbal behavior, and the articulation and tonal quality of the voices of children with WBS differ from other children with nonspecific developmental disabilities. A group of 25 children with WBS

A comparison of surgical and prosthetic treatment for speech disorders attributable to surgically acquired soft palate defects.

Surgical and prosthetic treatments for speech disorders attributable to surgically acquired soft palate defects were investigated. Ten patients who had undergone soft palate resection for extensive cancer served as the subjects. In four patients, the resected portion of the soft palate was confined to the anterior or middle segments, with an intact posterior band, whereas in the remaining six patients the resected portion extended into the posterior edge. An obturator with or without a speech appliance was adapted to all patients in the former group and to one patient in the latter group. The

Games in the Brain: Neural Substrates of Gambling Addiction.

As a popular form of recreational risk taking, gambling games offer a paradigm for decision neuroscience research. As an individual behavior, gambling becomes dysfunctional in a subset of the population, with debilitating consequences. Gambling disorder has been recently reconceptualized as a "behavioral addiction" in the DSM-5, based on emerging parallels with substance use disorders. Why do some individuals undergo this transition from recreational to disordered gambling? The biomedical model of problem gambling is a "brain disorder" account that posits an underlying neurobiological abnormal

Encoding, memory, and transcoding deficits in Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

A central question in Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is whether the core phenotype is limited to transcoding (planning/programming) deficits or if speakers with CAS also have deficits in auditory-perceptual encoding (representational) and/or memory (storage and retrieval of representations) processes. We addressed this and other questions using responses to the Syllable Repetition Task (SRT) [Shriberg, L. D., Lohmeier, H. L., Campbell, T. F., Dollaghan, C. A., Green, J. R., & Moore, C. A. (2009). Changes to articulatory kinematics in response to loudness cues in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit differences in displacement and velocity of the articulators as compared with older adults. The purpose of the current study was to examine effects of 3 loudness cues on articulatory movement patterns in individuals with PD. METHOD: Nine individuals diagnosed with idiopathic PD and 9 age- and sex-matched healthy controls produced sentences in 4 conditions: (a) comfortable loudness, (b) targeting 10 dB above comfortable, (c) twice as loud as comfortable, and (d) in background noise. Lip and jaw kinematics and acoustic measurements were

Quantitative evidence for distinct cognitive impairment in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

It is generally agreed that at least some aspects of abnormal eating behaviour is indeed due in part to disordered cognition. The accumulated literature illustrates cognitive impairment in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Yet beyond being inconsistent, these independent studies also do not reveal the magnitude of impairment within and across studies and fail to give due consideration to the magnitude of impairment so as to understand the severity and breadth of impairment and/or differences in cognitive profiles between patients with AN and BN. Hence, the present r

[Progressive loss of speech output with festinating speech--a case report].

Primary progressive aphasia is a rare disorder of unknown cause. We report a patient with progressive loss of speech output, a clinical variant of PPA, characterized by festinating speech. A 60-year-old right handed woman was admitted to our hospital, because of progressive deterioration of her speech. On admission, she was alert and orientated without dementia. A severe impairment of her articulation was observed: her speech rate was so fast that her speech became almost intelligible. The orofacial apraxia and difficulty in tapping were also present. The other neurological findings were norma

Effects of Age on Voice Onset Time and Variability in Children with Repaired Cleft Palate.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of age on voice onset time (VOT) and VOT variability in children with repaired cleft palate. METHODS: Twenty-two children with repaired cleft palate were allocated into two age groups: younger children (YC: n = 13) and older children (OC: n = 9). VOT measurements from monosyllabic words (/pɑ/, /tɑ/, and /kɑ/) and intraspeaker VOT variability estimated by coefficients of variation (CoV) of two age groups were compared. RESULTS: Age was found to have a statistically significant effect on VOT and VOT variability. Specifically, OC had significantly longer VOT (F(

Assumptions and Consequences of Different Conceptualizations of Personality Functioning.

Personality functioning (PF) is the defining criterion for personality disorder in contemporary diagnosis and a popular topic in research. However, research and dialogue on PF has been uneven and often ideologically driven, in part because semantic differences are often conflated with substantive differences in the way PF is conceptualized. Here, I distinguish four ways to conceptualize PF: a psychodynamic developmental dimension, a descriptive summary of whatever all personality disorders or maladaptive traits have in common, a multidimensional model of traits, and a multidimensional model of

Phonetic and phonological errors in children with high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome.

This study involved a qualitative analysis of speech errors in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Participants were 69 children aged 5-13 years; 30 had high functioning autism and 39 had Asperger syndrome. On a standardized test of articulation, the minority (12%) of participants presented with standard scores below the normal range, indicating a speech delay/disorder. Although all the other children had standard scores within the normal range, a sizeable proportion (33% of those with normal standard scores) presented with a small number of errors. Overall 41% of the group produce

Temporal acoustic properties of the sibilant fricative /s/ for the differential diagnosis of dysarthria and apraxia of speech in Spanish speakers.

Dysarthria and Apraxia of Speech (AoS) are motor speech disorders in which neurological lesions differentially affect motor control, possibly leading to noticeable differences in articulation and consequently sound production. Among the sounds requiring greater motor capacity because of its articulatory complexity is the voiceless alveolar sibilant fricative /s/. The aim of this study was to identify acoustic variables able to distinguish between dysarthria and AoS, and between these disorders and normal speech in Spanish speakers. The production of this fricative was acoustically examined in

Dorsal language stream anomalies in an inherited speech disorder.

Speech disorders are highly prevalent in the preschool years, but frequently resolve. The neurobiological basis of the most persistent and severe form, apraxia of speech, remains elusive. Current neuroanatomical models of speech processing in adults propose two parallel streams. The dorsal stream is involved in sound to motor speech transformations, while the ventral stream supports sound/letter to meaning. Data-driven theories on the role of these streams during atypical speech and language development are lacking. Here we provide comprehensive behavioural and neuroimaging data on a large nov

Malocclusion and Its Relationship with Sound Speech Disorders in Deciduous and Mixed Dentition: A Scoping Review.

Objectives: The intricate relationship between malocclusions and speech sound disorders (SSDs) is yet to be fully understood. This is particularly true for pediatric patients during the deciduous and mixed dentition stages. Employing a methodical scoping review approach, this study scrutinizes the recent literature to elucidate how these dental misalignments impact speech articulation and phonetic clarity. Methods: The present scoping review has been conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines.
