Leptospira exposure in the human environment in France: A survey in feral rodents and in fresh water.

This paper confirms the important role of rodents to be maintenance hosts of leptospires. Their role is related to renal carriage and shedding of leptospires into urine, thus contaminating fresh water. Serological and carriage of feral rodents trapped in France were determined by MAT and hap1PCR specific for pathogenic leptospires. In same areas, fresh water samples were analyzed by hap1PCR. The overall seroprevalence was 44% in 649 rodents and was similar regardless of the species. Seroprevalence for leptospirosis is about 20-53% according to species. hap1PCR (516 kidneys) showed that renal c

[Ecological bases of the combination of natural foci of Trematoda infections. 1. One- and two-host population-combined foci of Trematoda infections in the floodplain-river ecosystem of the Konda River].

In the context of the present-day teaching of parasitocenoses and the proposition that the pathogen's population is the only compulsory and specific component of a natural focus, the author brings to light the ecological bases of the combination of natural foci of metorchiases, bilharziasis, opisthorchiasis, and methorchiasis (M. xanthosomus). Two first foci are one-host population-combined and the latter focus is a two-host population-combined focus. While analyzing the combination of foci, it is expedient to consider in pairs since this provides a way of identifying the bases of the combinat

Mammal diversity and infection prevalence in the maintenance of enzootic Borrelia burgdorferi along the western Coastal Plains of Maryland.

The primary vector of Borrelia burgdorferi in North America, Ixodes scapularis, feeds on various mammalian, avian, and reptilian hosts. Several small mammal hosts; Peromyscus leucopus, Tamias striatus, Microtus pennsylvanicus, and Blarina spp. can serve as reservoirs in an enzootic cycle of Lyme disease. The primary reservoir in the northeast United States is the white-footed mouse, P. leucopus. The infection prevalence of this reservoir as well as the roles of potential secondary reservoirs has not been established in southern Maryland, a region of low to moderate Borrelia infection in humans

The musk rat (Ondatra zibethicus) as intermediate host of cestodes in the Netherlands.

An investigation on the presence of larval cestodes in musk rats (Ondatra zibethicus) was carried out in two regions of the Netherlands (east Groningen and south Limburg) where in a earlier study foxes with Echinococcus multilocularis were found. A total of 1726 musk rats were dissected (1200 in Groningen, 526 in Limburg). Larval stages of Taenia taeniaeformis were most frequently found (total 44.8%: Groningen 42%, Limburg 51.3%), followed by T. martis (total 6.1%: Groningen 0.7%, Limburg 18.6%). Infections with T. crassiceps (total 0.3%: Groningen 0%, Limburg 1.0%), T. polyacantha (total 0.2%

High prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis in urban red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and voles (Arvicola terrestris) in the city of Zürich, Switzerland.

Over a period of 26 months from January 1996 to February 1998, 388 foxes from the city of Zürich, Switzerland, were examined for intestinal infections with Echinococcus multilocularis and other helminths. The prevalence of E. multilocularis in foxes sampled during winter increased significantly from 47% in the urban to 67% in the adjacent recreational area, whereas prevalence rates of other helminths were similar in both areas. Seasonal differences in the prevalence of E. multilocularis were only found in urban subadult male foxes which were significantly less frequently infected in summer tha

IgG avidity assay for estimation of the time after onset of hantavirus infection in colonized and wild bank voles.

An immunoglobulin G avidity assay was used to determine recent and past hantavirus infection in bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus). Sera of experimentally infected bank voles were studied at different time intervals. The avidity of specific IgG increased over time after infection. This experimental data were used to estimate the time after onset of hantavirus infection in naturally infected bank voles caught in an endemic area. The possibility to discriminate between recently infected animals and animals infected some time ago is important since the proportion of recently infected bank voles

Immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and hormonal studies on the endocrine pancreas of voles (Microtus arvalis) with monosodium aspartate-induced diabetes.

A single subcutaneous administration of monosodium aspartate (MSA) to 30 neonatal voles, Microtus arvalis Pallas, induced a diabetes mellitus in 50% of the treated animals in early adulthood. The voles (18 males and 12 females) were weaned at 3 weeks of age and fed pellets for Herbivora and cubed hay. Diabetic voles with glycosuria (nine males and six females) were classified into two groups according to the duration and grade of glycosuria. One group had slight diabetes with glycosuria (+: 0.1%) for 1 week and the other severe diabetes with marked glycosuria ( : greater than or equal to 0.5%)

[Biological properties of antibiotic-resistant mutants of the mildly pathogenic Rickettsia prowazekii E strain].

The use of R. prowazekii strain E with low pathogenicity as live vaccine against exanthematous typhus is limited by its high specific reactogenicity, which is probably due to the reversion of the virulence of the strain. One of the approaches to the stabilization of the avirulent properties of strain E is obtaining its mutants with stable decreased pathogenic properties. The article presents the data on the infectious properties of R. prowazekii antibiotic-resistant strain E mutants obtained in earlier experiments, in respect of chick embryos and laboratory animals, as well as the capacity of

[Importance of T-lymphocytes in antibody production in experimental typhus infection].

The study of antibody production in cotton rats infected with Rickettsia prowazekii B and TB has revealed that R. prowazekii antigens, inducing the production of antibodies determined in the complement fixation, indirect hemolysis, and passive hemagglutination tests, are T-independent. The study of the nonspecific reactivity of T-lymphocytes in cotton rats infected with R. prowazekii TB has indicated that in case of the prolonged persistence of the infective agent in the animals no secondary immune deficiency develops.

Differential control of insulin secretion and somatostatin-receptor recruitment in isolated pancreatic islets.

Somatostatin receptors appear to be localized to secretory granules in pancreatic islet homogenates. Recruitment of these receptors to the islet-cell surfaces may mark the contact event between secretory granules and plasma membranes before release of insulin by fission. Isethionate, an impermeant anionic replacement for chloride, blocks the release step but does not affect receptor recruitment. By contrast, low concentrations of phenothiazine drugs, such as trifluoperazine and promethazine, inhibit both receptor recruitment and secretion. Scatchard analysis of phenothiazine effects on somatos

Sex chromosome transformation and the origin of a male-specific X chromosome in the creeping vole.

The mammalian sex chromosome system (XX female/XY male) is ancient and highly conserved. The sex chromosome karyotype of the creeping vole (Microtus oregoni) represents a long-standing anomaly, with an X chromosome that is unpaired in females (X0) and exclusively maternally transmitted. We produced a highly contiguous male genome assembly, together with short-read genomes and transcriptomes for both sexes. We show that M. oregoni has lost an independently segregating Y chromosome and that the male-specific sex chromosome is a second X chromosome that is largely homologous to the maternally tra

Occurrence and distribution of Giardia species in wild rodents in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Giardiasis is an important gastrointestinal parasitic disease in humans and other mammals caused by the protozoan Giardia duodenalis. This species complex is represented by genetically distinct groups (assemblages A-H) with varying zoonotic potential and host preferences. Wild rodents can harbor potentially zoonotic assemblages A and B, and the rodent-specific assemblage G. Other Giardia spp. found in these animals are Giardia muris and Giardia microti. For the latter, only limited information on genetic typing is available. It has been speculated that wild rodents might represent

Chromosomal Aberrations in Wild Mice Captured in Areas Differentially Contaminated by the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident.

Following the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, radiation effects on nonhuman biota in the contaminated areas have been a great concern. The induction of chromosomal aberrations in splenic lymphocytes of small Japanese field mice (Apodemus argenteus) and house mice (Mus musculus) inhabiting Fukushima Prefecture was investigated. In mice inhabiting the slightly contaminated area, the average frequency of dicentric chromosomes was similar to that seen in mice inhabiting a noncontaminated control area. In contrast, mice inhabiting the moderately and heavily contaminated areas showe

First report of genotyping of Toxoplasma gondii in free-living Microtus fortis in northeastern China.

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular protozoan parasite which imperils the health of almost all warm-blooded animals, including humans. The objective of this study was to determine genetic characterization of T. gondii in free-living Microtus fortis (reed vole) in Jilin province, northeastern China. A total of 104 DNA samples, 74 from Gongzhuling and 30 from Baicheng, were extracted from lung tissues of M. fortis , and 56 (53.8%) of them were positive for T. gondii by semi-nested polymerase chain reaction of the B1 gene. These positive DNA samples were typed at 10 genetic markers including SA

Prevalence and molecular characterizations of Toxoplasma gondii and Babesia microti from small mammals captured in Gyeonggi and Gangwon Provinces, Republic of Korea.

A survey was conducted to determine the distribution and prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Babesia microti infections in small mammals captured in Gyeonggi and Gangwon Provinces, Republic of Korea (ROK). The serological prevalence of T. gondii (ELISA) and B. microti (IFAT) was 2.3% (15/667) and 2.1% (14/667), respectively. DNA extracts from small mammal heart tissues were screened by PCR for T. gondii and B. microti targeting regions of the GRA5 gene and the 18S rRNA and β-tubulin genes, respectively. Only 0.17% (1/578) of Apodemus agrarius was positive of T. gondii by PCR, while 0.52% (3/57

Mycobacterium microti tuberculosis in its maintenance host, the field vole (Microtus agrestis): characterization of the disease and possible routes of transmission.

The field vole (Microtus agrestis) is a known maintenance host of Mycobacterium microti. Previous studies have shown that infected animals develop tuberculosis. However, the disease is also known in cats and is sporadically reported from humans and other mammalian species. We examined trapped field voles from an endemic area, using a range of diagnostic approaches. These confirmed that a combination of gross and histological examination with culture is most appropriate to identify the true prevalence of the disease, which was shown to be more than 13% at times when older animals that have prev

Echinococcus multilocularis in Svalbard, Norway: microsatellite genotyping to investigate the origin of a highly focal contamination.

Echinococcus multilocularis is a threatening cestode involved in the human alveolar echinococcosis. The parasite, mainly described in temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere was described for the first time in 1999 in the High Arctic Svalbard archipelago, Norway. The origin of this contamination could be due to an anthropogenic introduction from mainland Europe by domestic dogs or with the introduction of the sibling vole, perhaps from mainland Russia (St. Petersburg area), or with roaming Arctic foxes, known as the main definitive host of the parasite in Arctic regions. The genetic diver

Molecular detection of Bartonella species infecting rodents in Slovenia.

Rodents, collected in three zoogeographical regions across Slovenia, were tested for the presence of bartonellae using direct PCR-based amplification of 16S/23S rRNA gene intergenic spacer region (ITS) fragments from splenic DNA extracts. Bartonella DNA was detected in four species of rodents, Apodemus flavicollis, Apodemus sylvaticus, Apodemus agrarius and Clethrionomys glareolus, in all three zoogeographic regions at an overall prevalence of 40.4%. The prevalence of infection varied significantly between rodent species and zoogeographical regions. Comparison of ITS sequences obtained from ba

Water vole (Arvicola terrestris scherman) density as risk factor for human alveolar echinococcosis.

Concern is growing in Europe about alveolar echinococcosis (AE) with the increase in grassland rodent and red fox populations, intermediate and definitive hosts for Echinococcus multilocularis, respectively. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of rodent densities on human AE distribution. Spatial Poisson regression analyses were performed with geomorphologic features, landscape composition, climatic characteristics, and water vole density as independent variables. The outcome consisted of AE cases diagnosed over the period 1980-1992. High vole density yielded a 10-fold risk
