Gingival hypertrophy: a solitary manifestation of scurvy.

A 48-year-old woman presented with rapid onset hypertrophy of both the upper and lower gingiva. A detailed history and a diet nearly void of fruits and vegetables raised the suspicion of a possible deficiency of vitamin C. An estimation of the serum ascorbic acid level confirmed our suspicions (<0.12 mg/dL; normal range, 0.4-1.0 mg/dL) and a diagnosis of scurvy was confirmed. A course of 1000 mg/d of ascorbic acid was initiated that caused a dramatic resolution of the gingival lesions. Gingival hypertrophy has a large differential diagnosis; however, it is also known to be an extremely rare ma

Studies on iron deficiency anemia, rickets and zinc deficiency and their prevention among Chinese preschool children.

The incidence of iron deficiency anemia, rickets, and zinc deficiency is very high in Chinese preschool children and a method for prevention is urgently needed. From our studies, it can be seen that a soft drink powder is a convenient vehicle for the supplementation of iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin D, riboflavin, and ascorbic acid. Table salt is also a good, low-cost carrier for iron and zinc, and cow's milk can only be used for the enrichment of vitamins A and D. In our study the therapeutic dose of iron was lower than 3 mg/kg body weight recommended by the WHO Expert Committee. As ascorbic ac

A case with quadriparetic cerebral palsy and cyanosis: congenital methemoglobinemia.

The recessive form of congenital methemoglobinemia, caused by a defect of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-cytb5 reductase enzyme (cytb5r), is a rare disorder clinically presenting with cyanosis. Two different forms of recessive congenital methemoglobinemia have been described: In type I, cyanosis is the only major symptom and enzyme deficiency is restricted to erythrocytes. In type II, observed in 10-15% of all patients, enzyme deficiency occurs in the entire body and cyanosis is associated with severe, progressive neurologic impairment. This report presents a 10-year-old female with recessi

Internal distribution of excess iron and sources of serum ferritin in patients with thalassemia.

Liver and spleen iron concentrations, serum ferritin level and binding of S-ferritin to concanavalin A (Con A) were measured in 12 patients with thalassaemia major or intermedia at the time of splenectomy. All these subjects had increased liver iron concentration, most of them had hepatic fibrosis but none of them had histological evidence of chronic hepatitis. No patient had ascorbic acid deficiency. Serum ferritin concentration was increased in all cases, ranging from 266 to 5504 micrograms/l. In all but 2 subjects most of the protein did not bind to Con A, thus behaving as tissue ferritin. …

Scurvy.

Scurvy is caused by a deficiency of ascorbic acid. We describe a 31-year-old Hispanic man who had perifollicular hemorrhages, follicular hyperkeratosis, corkscrew hairs, and gingival hemorrhage after consuming a peculiar and restricted diet for 1 year. A diagnosis of scurvy was made and the patient's disease resolved after treatment with vitamin C.

Iron-rich drinking water and ascorbic acid supplementation improved hemolytic anemia in experimental Wistar rats.

Anemia is a frequent problem in both the primary and secondary health care programs. In contrast, most areas of northeast India are vulnerable to iron toxicity. In the present study, we documented the effect of administration of iron rich water on hemolytic anemia in a Wistar rats' animal model. Hemolytic anemia was induced by phenyl hydrazine through intraperitoneal route and diagnosed by the lowering of blood hemoglobin. After inducing the hemolytic anemia, 24 Wistar rats (n = 6 in four groups) were randomly assigned to 1 mg/l, 5 mg/l, and 10 mg/l ferric oxide iron along with 1 mg/ml ascorbi

Vitamin C deficiency.

In a case of ascorbic acid deficiency, recognition of the characteristic cutaneous manifestations of this entity is often the first step in making a diagnosis. These features are perifollicular hemorrhages, intrafollicular keratosis and numerous coiled hairs. Treatment of the condition requires a thorough understanding of the precipitating medical and socioeconomic factors of the patient.

Studies on neurolathyrism.

Neurolathyrism is a neurological condition seen among people who eat the seeds of Lathyrus sativus (LS) as a principal source of food energy for 2 months or more. It is characterized by severe muscular rigidity and paralysis of the lower limbs. beta-N-Oxalyl-L-alpha,beta-diaminopropionic acid is the principal toxin found in the seed. No experimental animal model for neurolathyrism could be produced by feeding either the seeds or the toxin, although the condition has been known for centuries. We discovered that experimental neurolathyrism could be produced in guinea pigs and primates that neede

[Oxalic acid metabolism in chronic renal failure].

The mean plasma oxalic acid level is increased in renal failure. The mean plasma oxalic acid level was 74.8 +/- 18.5 mumol/l in 15 patients with chronic renal failure and 129.9 +/- 47.7 mumol/l in 31 patients on chronic haemodialysis which are several times higher than the normal range (16.8 +/- 6.0 mumol/l). During haemodialysis oxalic acid showed a behaviour similar to that of creatinine. The increased plasma oxalic acid levels are due to the accumulation of oxalic acid in renal insufficiency and additional metabolic factors increasing endogenous synthesis of oxalic acid. The administration
