Autonomic nervous system instability, tetanic necrosis of the heart and myocardial TNFalpha expression in a tetanus fatal case.

The cardiovascular manifestations of tetanus consist of disturbances of heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure instability, arrhythmias, myocardial dysfunction and sympathetic overactivity. It was suggested that either a sudden loss of catecholamine stimulation or myocardial damage caused by the direct action of the tetanus toxin, could be involved in cardiac dysfunction described in tetanus. However, histologic evidence of myocardial necrosis in tetanus was demonstrated in few cases. We report a fatal case of tetanus in which we investigated the cardiac morphology and the expression of TNFalph

Evaluation of effects of intra aortic balloon counterpulsation on autonomic nervous system functions by heart rate variability analysis.

BACKGROUND: In patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), intraaortic balloon counterpulsation (IABC) may improve cardiac performance, decrease the incidence of recurrent ischemia, and improve survival. Although there have been several reports concerning circulatory maintenance with the IABC, response of the autonomic nervous system to these hemodynamic changes is not clear. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis has been extensively used to evaluate autonomic modulation of sinus node and to identify patients at risk for an increased cardiac mortality. In this study, we evaluated effects …

Autonomic nervous system function in patients with monogenic hypertension and brachydactyly: a field study in north-eastern Turkey.

Laboratory studies in patients with autosomal-dominant hypertension and brachydactyly showed increased sensitivity to sympathetic stimuli and severe abnormalities in baroreflex buffering. To further elucidate the mechanisms by which impaired baroreflex sensitivity could influence blood pressure (BP), we conducted autonomic testing under field conditions. We studied 17 hypertensive affected (13 to 48 years, BMI 22.7 +/- 6.5 kg/m(2), 160 +/- 23/98 +/- 15 mm Hg) and 12 normotensive non-affected (9 to 60 years, BMI 24.0 +/- 4.7 kg/m(2), 120 +/- 16/70 +/- 10 mm Hg) family members. Plasma catecholamines and autonomic nervous system function in patients with early renal insufficiency and hypertension: effect of clonidine.

Plasma catecholamines, hand-grip exercise and orthostatic stress were used to assess sympathetic nerve function in 14 hypertensive patients with mild to moderate renal failure and, for comparison, in 14 age-matched normal subjects. Furthermore, acute and chronic administrations of clonidine were used to determine a participation of the sympathetic nervous system in the maintenance of hypertension in these patients. Baseline mean blood pressure (MBP), plasma norepinephrine (NE), plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone were elevated in patients with renal failure. During hand-grip exercise,

Autonomic Nervous System Adaptation to Supernumerary Robotic Finger Use: Coherence Analysis of RR Intervals Before and After Training.

Supernumerary robotic fingers (SRFs) are wearable assistive devices, which are increasingly incorporated into robotic rehabilitation programs aimed at restoring upper-limb function and promoting task-specific compensation. Despite growing evidence of SRF efficacy in improving motor performance, limited attention has been given to physiological adaptation and autonomic nervous system (ANS) integration during SRF use. This study investigated phase coherence (PC) and amplitude-weighted phase coherence (AWPC) of RR intervals derived from photoplethysmogram (PPG) as noninvasive biomarkers for auton…

Acute Effects of Transcutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation on Autonomic Nervous System Activity in Healthy Volunteers: An Exploratory Study.

AIM: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance may contribute to functional pelvic disorders such as overactive bladder (OAB). Transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) is a non-invasive therapy for OAB; however, its autonomic modulation mechanisms remain unclear. This exploratory study evaluated the acute effects of TTNS on ANS activity in healthy volunteers using heart rate variability (HRV) to model neuroautonomic pathways relevant to OAB. METHODS: In this open-label, prospective, exploratory, single-arm study, 20 healthy volunteers (11 women; median age 31 years) underwent three 10-mi…

Thoracic autonomic nervous system surgery current application-a survey among members of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic autonomic nervous system surgery is mainly used for hyperhidrosis/facial flushing, whereas cardiac and vascular indications are limited. The literature remains controversial regarding the correct indications and surgical technique, with the lack of homogeneous data being a major limitation. We designed a survey to investigate current practice among members of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS). METHODS: A 29-question ad hoc questionnaire was available to all ESTS members from December 2022 to February 2023. It included questions on demographics, indications,…

Research on atrial fibrillation mechanisms and prediction of therapeutic prospects: focus on the autonomic nervous system upstream pathways.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common clinical arrhythmia disorder. It can easily lead to complications such as thromboembolism, palpitations, dizziness, angina, heart failure, and stroke. The disability and mortality rates associated with AF are extremely high, significantly affecting the quality of life and work of patients. With the deepening of research into the brain-heart connection, the link between AF and stroke has become increasingly evident. AF is now categorized as either Known Atrial Fibrillation (KAF) or Atrial Fibrillation Detected After Stroke (AFDAS), with stroke as the

Increased Postprandial Colonic Motility and Autonomic Nervous System Activity in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The prevalence and severity of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) declines with age, but the cause of this is unknown. This study tested 2 hypotheses: (1) autonomic nervous system responses to eating and bowel distention, measured by heart rate variability (HRV), differs by age in IBS patients and (2) HRV is correlated with colonic motility and IBS symptoms. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-six Rome III positive IBS patients and 31 healthy controls underwent colonic manometry with bag distention in the descending colon, followed by ingestion of an 810-kcal meal. HRV, evaluated by l…
