This study compares the morbidity (hospitalization) rates by age of male Navy aviators (n = 22,417) with rates for three male control populations: nonpilot aircrew officers (n = 9,483), unrestricted line officers (n = 55,593), and staff officers (n = 46,565). BACKGROUND: The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) ranks helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) as one of the most perilous occupations in the United States, with improvements in its safety of highest priority. As many injured patients are transported by helicopter, this is of particular concern to the trauma community. The use of HEMS is associated with a heightened degree of inherent risk. The aim of this review article is to give an overview of current knowledge on kitesurfing injuries. As part of a prospective study, the overall self-reported injury rate was 7.0 per 1000 h of practice. One fatal accident and 11 severe injuries occurred. The most commonly injured sites were foot and ankle, head, chest, and knee. Contusions, abrasions, and lacerations were amongst the most frequent injuries. None of the athletes suffering a head injury used a helmet; the board had been flung against the head by the elastic board leech in all cases. The most common injury situation was the jump.

The case of a soldier with multiple cervical fractures without neurologic deficit sustained after a helicopter crash during Operation Desert Storm is presented. The fractures involved the C2 body and the right facet joint and pedicle of C4. This fracture pattern, in association-with lack of neurologic deficit, is the first such case reported in the literature.

This paper reports on three cases of symptomatic low back pain in three paratroopers in association with bilateral L5 spondylolysis and L5 on S1 spondylolisthesis. The controversy regarding the etiology of this lesion as well as the problems of establishing causality when associated with parachuting injuries are discussed. These cases raise the issue of whether routine lumbar spine roentgenography should be performed as part of the pre-course medical screening prior to an individual undertaking basic parachutist training, and stress the need for further study of the relevance of these lesions

However, their poor UV resistance and surface inertness seriously hinder their utilization, especially in harsh environments.
