A 78-year-old female was admitted with complaints of malaise and fatigue in the legs. The patient was diagnosed as severe aplastic anemia and treatment was started with metenolone and steroid pulse therapy. Administration of antibiotics and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor which led to a resolution of the high fever. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 2.5-month-old infant with Bacillus cereus meningitis who was initially admitted for Reye syndrome. Gram positive bacteria was isolated in CSF and shown to be located inside the polymorphonuclears. This pathogen was further identified by sequencing of the 16S RNA. Early administration of imipenem in association with amikacin resulted in a rapid recovery. No obvious immune defect or invasive procedure could be assessed.

A vacuole-formation substance, cereulide of Bacillus cereus, is an emetic toxin in animals. Both oral administration and intraperitoneal injection of cereulide caused dose-dependent emesis in Suncus murinus, a new animal model of emesis. Vagotomy or a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist completely abolished this emetic effect. Therefore, cereulide causes emesis through the 5-HT3 receptor and stimulation of the vagus afferent. We also found that our purified cereulide caused swelling of mitochondria of HEp-2 cells.

Detailed photostability studies were carried out using purified delta-endotoxin crystals from Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies HD-1 and HD-73. The mechanism and time course of sunlight inactivation was investigated by: (a) monitoring the tryptophan damage in the intact crystals by Raman spectroscopy, (b) amino acid analysis and (c) biological assays using insects. The results demonstrate that, for purified HD-1 or HD-73 crystals, the 300-380 nm range of the solar spectrum is largely responsible for bringing about crystal damage and consequent loss of toxicity. Bicarbonate is required for production of the major virulence factors, the toxins and capsule, of Bacillus anthracis. In this study we examined the basis for stimulation of production of protective antigen (PA), a central component of the two anthrax toxins encoded by plasmid pXO1. A fluorescein-conjugated antibody against formalin-inactivated spores of Bacillus anthracis Vollum reacted only weakly with a variety of Bacillus species in microfluorometric immunofluorescence assays. A conjugated antibody against spores of B. anthracis Sterne showed little affinity for spores of several B. anthracis isolates including B. anthracis Vollum, indicating that more than one anthrax spore serotype exists.
