Acne is known as a chronic inflammatory skin disease with sever adverse effects on quality of life in the patients. The increasing resistance to antibiotics has decreased their effectiveness in treating acne. As viable microbial dietary supplements, probiotics provide health benefits through fighting pathogens and maintaining the homeostasis of the gut and skin microbiome. The present article reviewed the potential of probiotics as beneficial microorganisms for treating acne vulgaris. This review of literature was conducted through a bibliographic search of popular databases, including Science

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are responsible for the malolactic fermentation of wines, and, therefore, controlling the growth of these bacteria is a key factor for elaborating premium wines. Sulfur dioxide has been traditionally used as an efficient antimicrobial and antioxidant agent, however, nowadays consumers' demand tends toward a reduction of sulfur dioxide levels in wine and other fermented foods. A previous study of our research group had demonstrated the effectiveness of the bacteriocin nisin to inhibit the growth of enological LAB, and its activity had been tested in culture broths. Th

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B streptococci--GBS) is one of the coexistent components of vaginal microflora. Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) are the predominant bacteria in the physiological flora of vagina. The production of antagonistic substances like short chain fatty acids, hydrogen peroxide, bacteriocin-like substances protects against multiplication of pathogenic microorganisms. However, during pregnancy there is a disturbance of vaginal microflora and there are optimal conditions for bacterial or candidal vaginitis. Despite sufficient protection of LAB during pregnancy, Streptococcus aga

The present paper provides an overview on the use of probiotic organisms as live supplements, with particular emphasis on Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium spp. The therapeutic potential of these bacteria in fermented dairy products is dependent on their survival during manufacture and storage. Probiotic bacteria are increasingly used in food and pharmaceutical applications to balance disturbed intestinal microflora and related dysfunction of the human gastrointestinal tract. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium spp. have been reported to be beneficial probiotic organisms

Dental caries continues to represent a major global public health concern and arises from complex ecological shifts within oral biofilms. The dominance of Streptococcus mutans, in combination with broader microbial imbalance and interactions involving the oral virome, plays a central role in disease progression. Although established preventive measures such as fluoride therapy and mechanical plaque control reduce enamel demineralization and microbial load, they do not comprehensively address dysbiosis, virulence regulation, or host-microbial signaling dynamics. Postbiotics are non-viable micro

Background/Objectives: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major cause of healthcare-associated infections, and the global rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains has created an urgent need for alternative therapeutics. R- and F-type pyocins are phage tail-like bacteriocins that selectively kill P. aeruginosa by binding to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptors. We characterized O-serotype distribution and pyocin susceptibility among clinical isolates from central Taiwan to evaluate their therapeutic potential. Methods: A total of 109 ICU-derived P. aeruginosa isolates were analyzed. O-serotypes were de

INTRODUCTION: Mastitis is an intramammary inflammatory condition predominantly caused by infectious pathogens and remains a major threat to dairy animal health and productivity. It results in substantial economic losses due to reduced milk yield, compromised milk quality, increased veterinary expenditures, and elevated culling rates. Although multiple strategies are currently employed for mastitis management, their effectiveness remains variable. This review summarizes and critically evaluates recent emerging technologies and integrated approaches for mastitis management.

S-layers were long regarded as elegant but functionally inert molecular armor. The discovery, three decades ago, that the S-layer of Geobacillus stearothermophilus carries covalently attached glycans overturned this view and inaugurated a new chapter in bacterial cell biology. Since then, the field has expanded in taxonomic scope and mechanistic depth. Complex O-linked glycans have been characterized on bacterial S-layers across Gram-positive Firmicutes, including Paenibacillus alvei, commensal lactobacilli, and the nosocomial pathogen Clostridioides difficile, while the periodontal pathogen T

Dysbiosis of the oral microbiome mediates chronic periodontal disease. Realignment of microbial dysbiosis towards health may prevent disease. Treatment with antibiotics and probiotics can modulate the microbial, immunological, and clinical landscape of periodontal disease with some success. Antibacterial peptides or bacteriocins, such as nisin, and a nisin-producing probiotic, Lactococcus lactis, have not been examined in this context, yet warrant examination because of their biomedical benefits in eradicating biofilms and pathogenic bacteria, modulating immune mechanisms, and their safety pro

The genus Streptococcus contains some of the most important commensals and pathogens of the human microbiome. To obtain the fatty acids required for cell membranes, Streptococcus either produce fatty acids de novo through the fatty acid biosynthesis (fab) pathway or uptake host fatty acids through the fatty acid kinase (fak) pathway. Although both the fab and fak pathways represent potential therapeutic targets to prevent or treat infection, progress is limited because of an incomplete understanding of taxon-to-taxon variability in streptococcal lipid metabolism. Here, we examined the role of

The main cause of non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection in humans is ingestion of contaminated animal-derived foods such as eggs, poultry and dairy products. These infections highlight the need to develop new preservatives to increase food safety. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have the potential to be further developed as food preservative agents and join nisin, the only AMP currently approved, for use as a preservative in food. Acidocin J1132β, a bacteriocin produced by probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus, displays no toxicity to humans, however it exhibits only low and narrow-spectrum ant
