The parietal reach region selectively anti-synchronizes with dorsal premotor cortex during planning.

Recent reports have indicated that oscillations shared across distant cortical regions can enhance their connectivity, but do coherent oscillations ever diminish connectivity? We investigated oscillatory activity in two distinct reach-related regions in the awake behaving monkey (Macaca mulatta): the parietal reach region (PRR) and the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd). PRR and PMd were found to oscillate at similar frequencies (beta, 15-30 Hz) during periods of fixation and movement planning. At first glance, the stronger oscillator of the two, PRR, would seem to drive the weaker, PMd. However, a

Globus pallidus internus oscillatory activity is related to movement speed.

Local field potentials (LFPs) recorded from deep brain stimulation electrodes implanted in the globus pallidus internus (GPi) of patients with hyperkinetic movement disorders (dystonia and Tourette's syndrome) have shown desynchronized activity at 8-20 Hz and synchronized activity at 30-90 Hz during voluntary movements. However, the impact of the speed of the motor task on these frequency shifts is still unclear. In the current study, we recorded LFPs bilaterally from the GPi in seven patients with hyperkinetic movement disorders during normal/slow and fast horizontal line drawing movements as

Day-night differences in the effects of gonadal hormones on melatonin release from perifused rat pineals. Evidence of a circadian control.

The effects of testosterone (10(-3) M, 10(-6) M, and 10(-9) M) and 17 beta-estradiol (10(-3) M and 10(-9) M) were looked for upon isoproterenol-stimulated melatonin release by perifused pineal glands removed from male rats and female rats in diestrus. Two different times of a 12/12 hour light/dark cycle, i.e., 7 and 19 hours after light onset, were documented in order to look for the existence of a circadian stage-dependence of the hormone effects. Both testosterone (45-60%) and estradiol (60-80%) markedly increased melatonin release by glands removed during the dark span and not during the li

[Topographic aspects of drug-induced fast rhythms in quantitative topo-electroencephalography].

The topographical aspects of fast rhythms induced by different psychotropic drugs have been studied in patients by means of a previously described method. This method is based on the spectral analysis of 28 EEG channels over both cerebral hemispheres. The spectral parameters, computed over 2 min 40 sec, are put into a data base. The clinician can then decide which of these parameters will be extracted from the data base and then displayed by means of maps on a graphic terminal. Those maps are useful for immediate comparison not only of the fast rhythms' characteristic values but also of those

The blood-brain barrier in adrenaline-induced hypertension. Circadian variations and modification by beta-adrenoreceptor antagonists.

Rats were subjected to adrenaline-induced acute hypertension during either the day or night. Albumin leakage into the brain was studied with Evans blue and 125I labeled serum albumin. The leakage was significantly lower during the night than during the day (P less than 0.001). d,1-propranolol had a protective effect (P less than 0.001) during the day and a slight reduction of the radioactivity (P less than 0.05 in some parts of the brain) was obtained by metoprolol (10 mg/kg) but not by butoxamine (10 mg/kg). None of the drugs reduced the tracer leakage during the night. The results suggest th

Ivabradine, atrial fibrillation and stroke: a combined meta-analysis and FAERS disproportionality analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous RCTs and meta-analyses observed an increased occurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) associated with ivabradine use. Nonetheless, these studies were not focused on AF diagnosis, and it remains unclear whether this observed increase is due to a direct effect of ivabradine or just an augmented AF detection. The latter mechanism could arise from a greater heart-rate differential between sinus rhythm and AF under ivabradine, potentially intensifying symptoms and prompting earlier clinical evaluation. If this hypothesis is true, an earlier diagnosis of AF, and subsequent earlier

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a prevalent and disabling psychiatric condition, yet its severity is still assessed mainly through cli … contributed most strongly to the prediction of GAD severity. These findings suggest that EEG FC and beta rhythms encode clinically meaningful information about GAD severity, and that Conv_gMLP-based models may provide a promising tool for objective, time-efficient assessment to support individualized treatment planning.

Effects of aldosterone blockade on left ventricular function and clinical status during acute myocardial infarction.

OBJECTIVE: Heart failure is frequently a serious complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). ACE inhibitors, Angiotensin II receptor blockers, beta-blockers and aldosterone receptor blockers have been shown to improve outcomes in this setting. This study aimed to determine the effect of spironolactone on the frequency of clinical heart failure, mortality, rehospitalization and left ventricular functions determined by echocardiography. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 82 patients with STEMI hospitalized within 6-12 h of debut of symptoms were included in the study. The patients were ran

Amyloid beta plaque pathology induces chemosensory deficits and increases apnoeas in the 5XFAD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) commonly co-presents with other ventilatory impairments in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Typically reported as either obstructive (OSA) or complex sleep apnoea in AD patients, SDB results in repeated bouts of hypoxia and hypercapnia from insufficient ventilation. It is thought not only that these repeated hypoxic events result in an exacerbation of AD but also that SDB and other ventilatory impairments may be a precursor to neurodegenerative diseases. Although the cause of SDB in AD patients is unclear, chemosensory drive malfunction, a response criti

The melatonin generating system in the rat retina and pineal gland: effect of single and repeated electroconvulsive shock (ECS).

N-Acetyltransferase (NAT), a rate-limiting enzyme in the melatonin synthesis which converts serotonin to N-acetylserotonin, shows a distinct circadian rhythm in the rat pineal gland and retina, with low activities during the light phase and peak activities during the dark phase. Hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT), an enzyme which methylates N-acetylserotonin to melatonin, did not show any significant diurnal variations in both analyzed tissues. Isoproterenol, a selective beta-adrenoceptor agonist, when administered during morning hours of the light phase, markedly increased NAT activity

Electroencephalographic lateralization, clinical correlates and pharmacological response in untreated Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: In Parkinson's disease (PD), different topographically defined cortical-subcortical oscillatory networks have been implicated in motor program dysfunction. Few studies have focused on clinical correlates of cortical activity asymmetry using quantitative electroencephalography. METHODS: We retrospectively selected N = 34 L-dopa naïve PD subjects who had undergone standardized electroencephalography. We selected N = 18 subjects group-matched by age, sex and hand dominance with normal electroencephalography and no parkinsonism and/or cognitive decline as controls. A Welch's periodogr

Effects of decision variables and intraparietal stimulation on sensorimotor oscillatory activity in the human brain.

To decide effectively, information must not only be integrated from multiple sources, but it must be distributed across the brain if it is to influence structures such as motor cortex that execute choices. Human participants integrated information from multiple, but only partially informative, cues in a probabilistic reasoning task in an optimal manner. We tested whether lateralization of alpha- and beta-band oscillatory brain activity over sensorimotor cortex reflected decision variables such as the sum of the evidence provided by observed cues, a key quantity for decision making, and whether

Stepping in time: Alpha-mu and beta oscillations during a walking synchronization task.

Interpersonal behavioral synchrony is defined as the temporal coordination of action between two or more individuals. Humans tend to synchronize their movements during repetitive movement tasks such as walking. Mobile EEG technology now allows us to examine how this happens during gait. 18 participants equipped with foot accelerometers and mobile EEG walked with an experimenter in three conditions: With their view of the experimenter blocked, walking naturally, and trying to synchronize their steps with the experimenter. The experimenter walked following a headphone metronome to keep their ste

Prefrontal transcranial alternating current stimulation improves motor sequence reproduction.

Cortical activity in frontal, parietal, and motor regions during sequence observation correlates with performance on sequence reproduction. Increased cortical activity observed during observation has therefore been suggested to represent increased learning. Causal relationships have been demonstrated between M1 and motor sequence reproduction and between parietal cortex and bimanual learning. However, similar effects have not been reported for frontal regions despite a number of reports implicating its involvement in encoding of motor sequences. Investigating causal relations between cortical
