Alcohol Use Associated With Gambling Harm in a Population Representative Australian Sample.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined whether alcohol use while gambling and engaging in heavy episodic drinking (HED) are associated with gambling harm in Victoria, Australia. It also explored whether combined alcohol use behaviours further increase harm, and whether economically disadvantaged individuals experience greater harm from alcohol use. METHODS: Data were used from the representative 2023 Victorian Population Gambling and Health Study subsample (N = 3114; 47.9% female; mean age = 46). Regressions were used to test whether HED (six or more drinks per occasion) and drinking while gamblin

Associations of common mental disorder with alcohol use in the adult general population: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Research has shown that alcohol use and common mental disorders (CMDs) co-occur; however, little is known about how the global prevalence of alcohol use compares across different CMDs. We aimed to (i) report global associations of alcohol use (alcohol use disorder (AUD), binge drinking and consumption) comparing those with and without a CMD, (ii) examine how this differed among those with and without specific types of CMDs and (iii) examine how results may differ by study characteristics. METHODS: We used a systematic review and meta-analysis. Cross-sectional, cohort, pro…

The effect of ketoprofen lysine salt on mucosa of rat stomach after ethyl alcohol intoxication.

INTRODUCTION: Ketoprofen is a commonly used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic and antipyretic properties. Side effects of ketoprofen occur mainly from the gastrointestinal tract due to the inhibition of cyclooxygenaze-1. Binge drinking at least once a week is reported by 80 million Europeans. On the day after many of them use NSAIDs. This increases the risk for damage of gastric mucosa. AIM: The aim of the study was to check if use of ketoprofen lysine salt (KLS) has any gastroprotective effect on mucosa of rat stomach after ethyl alcohol intoxication. MATERIALS AND …

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is robustly induced by ethanol and has a protective role in ethanol associated liver injury.

OBJECTIVE: Excess ethanol consumption has serious pathologic consequences. In humans, repeated episodes of binge drinking can lead to liver damage and have adverse effects on other organs such as pancreas and brain. Long term chronic consumption of ethanol can also result in progressive alcoholic liver disease and cirrhosis. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a metabolic regulator with multiple physiologic functions. FGF21 is a novel biomarker for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in humans and limits hepatotoxicity in mice. Therefore, we explored the possibility that FGF21 plays a…

Peer-led alcohol intervention for college students: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

This study aims to assess the preliminary efficacy and feasibility of a brief, peer-led alcohol intervention to reduce alcohol consumption in binge-drinking Spanish nursing students. A pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted with 50 first-year nursing students who were randomly assigned either a 50-min peer-led motivational intervention with individual feedback or a control condition. Primary outcomes for testing the preliminary efficacy were alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences. Quantitative and content analyses of open-ended survey questions were performed. Substance use and misuse among professional ballet dancers.

This study investigated substance use and misuse among 16 female and 9 male Croatian ballet professionals in 2008 using an original questionnaire. We analyzed social, personal, activity- and training-related, and educational factors, and criteria such as: binge alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, appetite suppressant consumption, analgesic use, and actual and potential "doping" habits. Frequency tables and rank-order correlation were calculated. More than one third of the male dancers reported binge drinking, while 20% of the females smoked more than a box of cigarettes per day. Almost 25% of…

Alcohol and fetal damage.

Since the identification of fetal alcohol syndrome in the end of the 1960s, substantial evidence has accumulated on a number of adverse effects that alcohol consumption during pregnancy may have on the fetus. Long-term effects on child development has also been observed. Although the various types of effects are well documented, less is known about threshold levels of consumption, under which there is no risk of damage. Few studies have assessed the risk associated with high episodic drinking. From a theoretical point of view, binge drinking in critical stages in organ formation may constitute…

[How much alcohol is too much and why? Comments on socially accepted but excessive alcohol drinking patterns].

Many modern societies increasingly seem to accept drinking patterns that should be qualified as excessive from a health care point of view. This does not concern alcoholism or alcohol addiction but a daily intake of three to eight glasses and the pattern of binge drinking. Although a lot of data are available on the physical consequences of alcohol abuse, little is known about the impact of these drinking patterns on peoples' health. According to the J-shaped curve between alcohol consumption and mortality, an increase in morbidity and mortality can be noticed from two to three drinks a day. T…

Dorsomedial striatum calcium permeable AMPA receptors in the development of aversion-resistant alcohol drinking.

RATIONALE: Alcohol use disorder is defined by drinking alcohol despite knowledge of negative consequences, often referred to as aversion-resistant drinking (The dorsomedial (DMS) and dorsolateral striatum (DLS) are necessary for goal-directed and habitual action selection, respectively. Leading hypotheses posit that once drug use becomes compulsive, DMS dependence degrades while DLS dependence increases. This shift may be mediated by changes in synaptic weights from glutamatergic inputs. OBJECTIVES: Using a combination of western-blot, micro-injections, and ex-vivo electrophysiology in male a

Tobacco and alcohol use in pregnancy in France: the role of migrant status: the nationally representative ELFE study.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco and alcohol use in pregnancy are modifiable yet frequent risk factors of poor perinatal outcomes. We examined whether characteristics associated with substance use in pregnancy vary between native and migrant women, who often differ in terms of socio-demographic characteristics. METHODS: Data come from a nationally representative sample of children born in France in 2011 (ELFE study, n=18,014). Maternal substance use in pregnancy (tobacco: ≥1 cigarette/day, alcohol: ≥1 time, binge drinking: ≥3 units of alcohol on one occasion) was assessed using survey methodology by a) …

Effects of chronic psychosocial stress on 'binge-like' sucrose intake in mice.

Binge eating episodes are persistent and are essential features of numerous eating disorders (EDs). Susceptibility to EDs is largely presumed to be associated with early life stress. In fact, converging evidence from preclinical animal studies have implicated stress as a driver of binge eating. Still, literature examination indicates that vulnerability to EDs may depend on factors such as severity, time, and the type of stressor. Therefore, we aimed at exploring the link between chronic psychosocial stress and 'binge-like' sucrose intake in adolescent mice. To this aim, intruders' experimental

Loneliness among emerging adults in rural reservation-based communities: longitudinal effects of 12th grade substance use and mental health symptoms.

Loneliness is a growing public concern among emerging adults, yet little is known about its predictors in rural and reservation-based communities. This study examines whether substance use and mental health symptoms in 12th grade predict loneliness post high school among a rural reservation-based sample. Participants (n = 483) were surveyed in 12th grade (Spring 2024) and again six months into young adulthood (Fall 2024). Independence estimating equations with a Poisson distribution were used to assess the effect of past 30-day substance use (alcohol use, binge drinking, cannabis use, vaping c…

Latent Class Analysis of Cancer Risk Behaviors Among College Students on Guam: A Pacific Islands Cohort of College Students Study (PICCS).

This study aims to explore how cancer-related risk factors cluster among college students in Guam. Using the 2021-2022 Pacific Islands Cohort of College Students data, we conducted a latent class analysis (LCA) to organize the sample into classes based on clustering cancer risk factors, including tobacco use, binge drinking, low fruit/vegetable intake, physical inactivity, betel nut use, overweight/obesity, depression, and anxiety. Among the 577 college students surveyed, results show a high prevalence of low fruit/vegetable intake, overweight/obesity, depression, and anxiety. The LCA identifi…

A single acute alcohol intoxication before fracture insult causes long-term elevated systemic RANKL and OPG levels in young adult mice.

Binge drinking is the most common form of alcohol abuse and 25-40% of orthopedic trauma patients are intoxicated upon admission. While alcohol consumption prolongs the healing time of bone fractures, the underlying mechanisms by which alcohol leads to this fracture healing disorder remain unclear. 240 young adult and aged male C57BL/6J mice were examined. Half of the animals were acutely alcoholized two hours before surgery. The isolated fracture (Fx) group underwent an externally stabilized osteotomy and another group (THFx) an additional trauma hemorrhage (TH). The Sham group only received c…

Microbiota Protects Mice Against Acute Alcohol-Induced Liver Injury.

BACKGROUND: Our aim is to investigate the physiological relevance of the intestinal microbiota in alcohol-induced liver injury. Chronic alcohol abuse is associated with intestinal bacterial overgrowth, increased intestinal permeability, and translocation of microbial products from the intestine to the portal circulation and liver. Translocated microbial products contribute to experimental alcoholic liver disease. METHODS: We subjected germ-free and conventional C57BL/6 mice to a model of acute alcohol exposure that mimics binge drinking. RESULTS: Germ-free mice showed significantly greater l…
