Biofeedback treatment for headache disorders: a comprehensive efficacy review.

The aim of the present review was to critically evaluate the documented evidence regarding the efficacy of biofeedback for the two most prevalent headache conditions--migraine and tension-type headache. Drawing upon two recently published meta-analyses, data from 150 outcome studies, including randomized controlled trials as well as uncontrolled quasi-experimental designs, were screened. Of these, 94 studies were selected for inclusion according to predefined criteria. Meta-analytic integrations were carried out separately for the two conditions of interest. The main results were medium-to-lar

Treatment strategies for chronic constipation: our experience.

Outlet dysfunction is responsible for 25% of all cases of chronic constipation. The aim of this article was to report our outcomes and investigate the efficacy of the different treatments that we have adopted to solve it. One hundred and twenty-six patients were treated with either surgery and/or biofeedback therapy. Ninety-seven of the 126 patients underwent surgery; 48 with hidden rectal prolapse: 44 underwent a stapled transanal rectal resection using a double stapler PPH-01 and 4 a single stapler PPH-01; 31 with rectocele and 18 with both hidden rectal prolapse and rectocele, respectively,

The diagnosis and treatment of nasal valve collapse.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The nasal valve is a complex structure that can be weakened from effects of aging, surgery, and trauma. A variety of methods have been described to strengthen the nasal valve region and prevent or treat nasal obstruction, such as batten grafts, spreader grafts, butterfly grafts, flare sutures, and suspension sutures. They will be briefly discussed here, but the intent of this review is to highlight the new developments in the treatment nasal valve collapse that have appeared in the literature over the last few years. RECENT FINDINGS: Various surgical techniques and approach

The treatment of facial palsy from the point of view of physical and rehabilitation medicine.

There are evidences to support recommending the early intake of prednisone (in its appropriate dose of 1 mg/kg body weight for up to 70 or 80 mg/day) or the combined use of prednisone and acyclovir (or valacyclovir) within 72 h following the onset of paralysis in order to improve the outcome of Bell's palsy (BP). Although there may be a controversy about the role of physiotherapy in BP or facial palsy, it seemed that local superficial heat therapy, massage, exercises, electrical stimulation and biofeedback training have a place in the treatment of lower motor facial palsy. However, each modali

A new antistuttering device: treatment of stuttering using bone conduction stimulation with delayed temporal feedback.

OBJECTIVES: Stuttering is a communication disorder affecting approximately 1% of the adult population, some with severe manifestations. Speech therapy improves stuttering, but many do not receive enough benefit to communicate fluently. Antistuttering devices have been available for several years, but available technology has been limited in long-term success and reliability. The current study evaluates the effects of a prototype device using a modification of a currently used bone conduction hearing device with delayed auditory feedback on adult patients with significant stuttering problems.

Sensory supported FES control in gait training of incomplete spinal cord injury persons.

Sensory supported electrical stimulation of the peroneal nerve during treadmill walking is proposed as a gait-training modality in incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. A multisensor device provides information on the tilt of the shank during gait. The information provided significantly improves the triggering instant of the electrical stimulation. Simultaneously, swing-phase estimation serves as a reference to determine the required motor augmentation support. Both approaches, as well as triggering using intensity control of the functional electrical stimulation were applied on a heal

Bladder training biofeedback and pelvic floor myalgia.

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a debilitating condition, traditionally treated with antimicrobials, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and alpha-blockers. Pelvic floor tension myalgia is hypothesized to be a contributing factor in CPPS. Biofeedback training for CPPS is based on the principle that maximum muscle contraction prompts maximum muscle relaxation. Similar chronic pain conditions have been treated successfully with biofeedback-assisted techniques of neuromuscular reeducation. Preliminary study by our group has shown biofeedback, pelvic floor reeducati

Dysfunctional elimination syndrome in children without obvious spinal cord diseases.

Elimination dysfunction is a functional disease that encompasses the urinary and GI tracts. Because the presentation is varied and ED is a disease of exclusion, a thorough history and physical examination are mandatory. Noninvasive management that includes the "fundamental four" and continuous engagement and encouragement of the patient and family are the pillars of treatment. For patients who are refractory to this approach, new research in children-directed biofeedback research shows promise.

Manipulation of frontal EEG asymmetry through biofeedback alters self-reported emotional responses and facial EMG.

Individual differences in resting asymmetrical frontal brain activity have been found to predict subsequent emotional responses. The question of whether frontal brain asymmetry can cause emotional responses has yet to be addressed. Biofeedback training designed to alter the asymmetry of frontal brain activity was therefore examined. Eighteen right-handed female participants were randomly assigned to receive biofeedback training designed to increase right frontal alpha relative to left frontal alpha (n = 9) or to receive training in the opposite direction (n = 9). Five consecutive days of biofe

Specific muscle EMG biofeedback for hand dystonia.

Currently available therapies have only limited success in patients having hand dystonia (writer's cramp). We employed specific muscle EMG biofeedback (audio feedback of the EMG from proximal large muscles of the limb that show abnormally high activity during writing) in 10 of 13 consecutive patients (age, 19-62 years; all males) with a duration of illness from 6 months to 8 years. In three patients, biofeedback was not applicable due to lack of abnormal EMG values. Nine patients showed dystonic posture during writing and had hypertrophy of one or more large muscles of the dominant hand. The r

[Physical therapy of idiopathic spinal disorders].

In Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation structural and functional disorders in the genesis of back pain are of great importance. From an epidemiological point of view this has great consequences. Active and passive forms of physical therapy are available. Assuming that the intradiscal pressure has an influence on the origin of back pain, the aim of physiotherapy has to be that any movement of the vertebral column has to be controlled with a minimum of muscular contraction. Passive forms of physical therapy like heat and cold, electrotherapy or mechanotherapy have a reflective reaction beside a

The videoendoscopic swallowing study: an alternative and partner to the videofluoroscopic swallowing study.

A new, physical examination-based videoendoscopic method of evaluation can enhance considerably the understanding and efficiency of clinicians working with patients with swallowing difficulties. Using the fiberoptic nasolaryngoscope, evaluation of structure and function of palate, pharynx, and larynx, along with sensation of the laryngopharynx, is carried out. Next, patients' swallowing capabilities are assessed as they ingest various food consistencies. This method, formerly called videoendoscopic evaluation of dysphagia (VEED), but perhaps more appropriately termed videoendoscopic swallowing

Behavior therapy for spasmodic torticollis: a case study suggesting a causal role for anxiety.

A 29-year old male with an 8-month history of spasmodic torticollis was treated after three baseline assessments with progressive relaxation, positive practice, and visual feedback. Subjective, behavioral, and physiological (EMG) data indicated that EMG declined across baseline assessments and treatment, while substantial changes in subjective and behavioral data occurred with treatment. Improvement on all dependent measures also was found at a 2-year follow-up. The data are discussed in terms of the non-specific effects of treatment, and the utility and economy of these primarily self-adminis

Bio-feedback and the yawning breath pattern in voice therapy: a clinical trial.

A breathing technique, or effective breath method is important for both singers and speakers for effective vocalization, and also useful for helping people with a voice problem. Here a diaphragm support breath pattern was used in voice therapy for patients with vocal nodules, recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, and incomplete glottal closure. Singing teachers use a technique, called the diaphragm breath support. This is called the yawning breath pattern (YBP) in our voice clinic and is used in teaching the patients with some kinds of voice disorder. In order to correct patients' breath patter
