Risk and Protective Factors for Sexual Health Outcomes Among Black Bisexual Men in the U.S.: Internalized Heterosexism, Sexual Orientation Disclosure, and Religiosity.

Bisexual individuals are oftentimes at higher risk for negative sexual health outcomes compared to their heterosexual, gay, and lesbian counterparts. Racial minorities, who may experience double minority stress, may be at particular risk for a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV. Some studies have considered protective factors that ameliorate negative health outcomes; yet, few focus on especially vulnerable populations. We analyzed a sample of 225 Black bisexual men (Mage = 36 years, SD = 12) from Atlanta to explore how combinations of risk (internalized heterosexism) and protective (

Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer's Disease, and Other Dementias in the Lives of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Older Adults and Their Caregivers: Needs and Competencies.

Cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and other dementias are important health concerns for older adults. As a marginalized and growing segment of the older adult population, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults face distinct risk factors related to cognitive impairment and dementias, including social isolation, discrimination, barriers to health care access, limited availability of and support for caregivers, and higher rates of certain chronic illnesses. We examine cognitive impairment and dementias among LGBT older adults, describe their unique risk factors, and

Associations of Perceived Parental Psychopathology with Mental Health Burden and Lifetime Drug Use in Gay, Bisexual, and other YMSM: The P18 Cohort Study.

Parental mental health may be a critical component in understanding the overlapping health burdens of mental health symptomatology and drug use in young men who have sex with men (YMSM), yet studies of YMSM have not fully examined these associations. To understand these relationships, data drawn from a study of gay, bisexual, and other YMSM were used to examine associations between perceived parental psychopathology and the health of YMSM. Findings suggest that YMSM reporting at least one parent with perceived depression, manic depression, schizophrenia, or antisocial behavior anytime during t

Drugs, Sex, and Condoms: Identification and Interpretation of Race-Specific Cultural Messages Influencing Black Gay and Bisexual Young Men Living with HIV.

Black gay and bisexual young men carry a disproportionate burden of HIV in the United States. This study explored Black gay and bisexual young men living with HIV's identification and interpretation of race-specific cultural messages regarding substance use, sexual activity, and condom use. A total of 36 Black gay and bisexual young men living with HIV (ages 16-24, mean = 20.6 years) from four geographically diverse regions of the United States participated in qualitative in-depth interviews. Results from this study elucidate the ways in which these young men interpret various forms of race-sp

Event-Level Analysis of Anal Sex Roles and Sex Drug Use Among Gay and Bisexual Men in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

This study analyzed event-level partnership data from a computer-assisted survey of 719 gay and bisexual men (GBM) enrolled in the Momentum Health Study to delineate potential linkages between anal sex roles and the so-called "sex drugs," i.e., erectile dysfunction drugs (EDD), poppers, and crystal methamphetamine. Univariable and multivariable analyses using generalized linear mixed models with logit link function with sexual encounters (n = 2514) as the unit of analysis tested four hypotheses: (1) EDD are significantly associated with insertive anal sex roles, (2) poppers are significantly a

Cues-to-Action in Initiating Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender-Related Policies Among Magnet Hospital Chief Nursing Officers: A Demographic Assessment.

This study explored Magnet Chief Nursing Officers' cues-to-action initiating lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT)-specific policies. Homonegativity has a negative effect on employee recruitment and retention and patient satisfaction. Little has been known about what cues-to-action might initiate LGBT inclusive training. Surveys were mailed to 343 Chief Nursing Officers. Cues-to-action survey was used to assess what inspires initiation of LGBT training. Demographic surveys were used to assess what impact variables might have on cues-to-action. Age, sex, religiosity, location, and regio

Sexually transmitted infection trends among gay or bisexual men from a clinic-based sentinel surveillance system in British Columbia, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: We described trends for sexually transmitted infections (STI) among gay/bisexual men in British Columbia, Canada, using a sentinel site surveillance approach. METHODS: Using data from an electronic charting system, we included gay/bisexual men who visited high-volume STI clinics from 2000 to 2013. Diagnosis rates and incidence density were calculated for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis C, genital herpes, and genital warts. Incidence density was estimated among repeat testers who converted from a negative to positive test result. We also conducted Poisson regressio

Nursing students' perceptions of their knowledge of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues: effectiveness of a multi-purpose assignment in a public health nursing class.

Nurses work with diverse populations, but the nursing literature lacks research, theoretical frameworks, or practice guidelines regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) health. Through diverse teaching strategies, students explored issues related to LGBT patients, families, and nurses using a cultural humility lens. Diverse teaching strategies included readings, a 2-hour presentation on LGBT health issues, and an assignment to conduct a scripted interview with two nurse key informants, based on the Health Care Equality Index (HEI). Students completed an online LGBT awareness pr

Injecting drug use among gay and bisexual men in Sydney: prevalence and associations with sexual risk practices and HIV and hepatitis C infection.

Injecting drug use is commonly reported among gay and bisexual men in Australia. We examined the prevalence and covariates of injecting drug use among men participating in the Sydney Gay Community Periodic Survey between 2004-06 and 2011. In 2004-06, data was collected about which drugs were injected, while in 2011, data was collected about hepatitis C (HCV) and esoteric sexual practices. In 2004-06, 5.6 % of men reported injecting drugs in the previous 6 months; 3.4 % reported methamphetamine injection and 0.4 % heroin injection. In 2011, men who injected drugs were less likely to be employed

Sexual health, HIV, and sexually transmitted infections among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in the United States.

The sexual health of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States is not getting better despite considerable social, political and human rights advances. Instead of improving, HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain disproportionately high among MSM and have been increasing for almost two decades. The disproportionate and worsening burden of HIV and other STIs among MSM requires an urgent re-assessment of what we have been doing as a nation to reduce these infections, how we have been doing it, and the scale of our efforts. A sexual health approac

Who, what, where, when, and why: demographic and ecological factors contributing to hostile school climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth.

This study examines how locational (region and locale), community-level (school district poverty and adult educational attainment), and school district-level (district size and ratios of students to key school personnel) variables are related to indicators of hostile school climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. Indicators of hostile climate included frequency of homophobic remarks and victimization regarding sexual orientation and gender expression. We used data from a national survey of LGBT secondary school students (N = 5,420; 57.6% female; 65.5% White; mean age

Effects of a peer-led behavioral intervention to reduce HIV transmission and promote serostatus disclosure among HIV-seropositive gay and bisexual men.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of an enhanced peer-led intervention on transmission risk behavior and serostatus disclosure of HIV-seropositive gay and bisexual men. DESIGN: A randomized intervention trial. METHODS: HIV-seropositive gay and bisexual men were recruited from New York City and San Francisco and were randomly assigned to either a standard or an enhanced intervention. The standard intervention consisted of one session that provided safer sex information. The enhanced intervention consisted of six sessions and included safer sex information, interactive learning activities, a

Patient characteristics, HIV serostatus, and risk behaviors among gay and bisexual males seeking treatment for methamphetamine abuse and dependence in Los Angeles.

Methamphetamine, a drug used at alarming rates among gay/bisexual males in the West, is often combined with sexual activities, thereby increasing HIV-related risks in an already high-risk group. Findings from 68 gay/bisexual men seeking treatment for methamphetamine dependence in Hollywood, California were analyzed to predict HIV serostatus based on demographic, drug use, or sexual behavior variables. Results showed that more HIV-infected participants than non-infected men reported medical problems (97.6% versus 46.2%; X2 = 24.7, df = 1, p < .0001), histories of genital gonorrhea (59.5% versus

Heterogeneity of Intersectional Discrimination Experiences Among Young Black Cisgender Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States.

To understand the sexual health inequities experienced by young Black cisgender gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YBMSM) in the United States, it is essential to investigate structural causes, including the intersecting forms of oppression experienced by YBMSM. In this study, we aim to understand the heterogeneity of YBMSM's intersectional discrimination experiences through a latent profile analysis (LPA). We analyzed self-report data from a national sample of YBMSM, ages 18-29 and living without HIV (n = 266), focusing on the Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS). Participants

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, antibisexual stigma, and alcohol use and binge drinking among young bisexual+ women who experienced sexual violence.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to sexual violence and antibisexual stigma were associated with alcohol use as a way to cope among bisexual and other multigender-attracted (i.e., bisexual+) women. METHOD: The sample included 113 cisgender bisexual+ women (Mage = 22.17, range = 18-25; 85.8% White) who reported adult sexual violence and alcohol use at baseline. Past-month alcohol use was assessed at 1-month, 2-month, and 3-month follow-up. Multilevel models tested indirect effects of PTSD symptoms and antibisexual stigma on alcohol use (i.e.,

Comparative Performance of Prostate Cancer Risk Prediction Tools in Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men vs Heterosexual Men.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of clinical models and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)-based prostate cancer (PCa) risk calculators in men who have sex with men (MSM) vs heterosexual men (HSM). MSM comprise 3%-6% of US men yet remain underrepresented in validation studies of PCa risk tools. Behavioral and anatomic factors may influence the performance of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), digital rectal examination (DRE), and prostate MRI. METHODS: We analyzed 486 men (243 MSM, 243 HSM) undergoing prostate biopsy at a single academic center, matched by age, PSA, race/ethnicity, and MRI stat

Community-Led Responses to Mpox Among Gay, Bisexual, and Queer Men in Canada: Mapping the Collaboration of Community-Based Organizations, Public Health, and Clinicians.

Since 2022, a global mpox outbreak in non-endemic countries, including Canada, has spread rapidly, mainly affecting gay, bisexual, and queer men (GBQM). With mpox primarily transmitted through sexual and close physical contact, concerns emerged over the replication of early responses to HIV/AIDS, which was initially labeled as a "gay disease," perpetuating ongoing negative stereotypes and discrimination against GBQM. To prevent potential social and health-related stigmatization, institutional actors, including public health authorities, community-based organizations (CBOs), and clinical bodies

Toward a mechanistic understanding of LGBTQ-affirmative cognitive-behavioral therapy: Testing treatment mediators in a randomized controlled trial with young gay and bisexual men.

INTRODUCTION: Young gay and bisexual men (YGBM) face elevated risk for co-occurring mental (e.g., depression, anxiety), behavioral (e.g., substance use), and sexual (e.g., HIV-transmission-risk behavior) health challenges compared to their heterosexual peers. LGBTQ-affirmative cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) targets psychosocial pathways through which minority stress is hypothesized to contribute to these disparities. We evaluated whether LGBTQ-affirmative CBT operates through these candidate mechanisms. METHODS: We analyzed trial data from 254 HIV-negative YGBM (ages 18-35; 67.2 % racial/
