BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aims to examine the prevalence and progression of coagulation disorders in adult COVID-19 patients and evaluate the effect of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on coagulation markers.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 1885 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, aged 20 to over 90 years, from January 23, 2020, to March 9, 2021, across 23 centers in 13 provinces in Iran. Normal subjects, patients with various bleeding disorders, and patients with von Willebrand's disease were studied. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of preeclampsia on maternal and cord blood clotting parameters. Pregnant controls and preeclamptics plus their offspring had plasma analyzed for prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen, and clotting activity for factors II, V, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, plus factor II antigen. A 13-year-old girl with a family history of epistaxis presented with pubertal menorrhagia necessitating multiple blood transfusions. Her coagulation profile confirmed the diagnosis of Von Willebrand disease. The menorrhagia was controlled by cyclical use of oestrogen progestogen combination drugs. The important clinical implication of this case is that the patient with adolescent menorrhagia may have an underlying coagulation disorder, which can successfully be managed by hormones.

Hyperechoic retroperitoneal fat was identified in a 3 yr old Sphynx cat with systemic coagulopathy. This ultrasonographic finding preceded the development of hematochezia and anemia, and pleural and peritoneal bleeding did not develop. INTRODUCTION: To assist design of future HBOC clinical trials for pre-hospital and prolonged field care, the haemoglobin-based-oxygen carrier (HBOC) Phase III trauma trial database comparing PolyHeme to blood transfusion was re-analysed to identify causes of adverse early outcomes versus the 30-day mortality outcome of the original trial.
