Transfusion of homologous blood is associated with significant and well-known risks. Reported transfusion rates for pediatric patients under … range, 50-250 ml). Thirty-three percent of the patients in the IAT group did not require homologous blood transfusion. No complications were observed with the use of the Cell Saver in the IAT group. The use of the Cell Saver was associated with a significant decrease in the amount and rate of homologous blood transfusions. Its use appears to be safe in pediatric pa …

Anemia may increase the risk of tissue hypoxia in preterm infants. This could lead to respiratory center depression and an increased risk for apnea. Heart rate and breathing pattern were recorded in 30 preterm infants (gestational age 30.0 +/- 2.3 weeks, postnatal age 46.6 +/- 20.8 days, and weight 1,438 +/- 266 g) before and after a transfusion of 10 mL/kg of packed RBCs. All infants were stable clinically, breathing room air, and free of prolonged apneic episodes. After transfusion, hematocrit levels increased from 27.0% +/- 2.5% to 35.8% +/- 4.7%. Heart rate decreased from 157.2 +/- 13.6 be

Resuscitation of the newborn with severe anemia and shock requires rapid expansion of the circulatory volume. This study was done to answer the question whether an infant's autologous placental blood can be recommended for this purpose. In 20 term newborns we obtained immediately after placenta delivery placental blood for bacteriologic, biochemical, hematologic and hemostaseologic investigations by a special placental vein cannulation technique. Besides other coagulation tests resonancethrombography was done and proved to be a simple, quick and reliable method to study coagulability of the pl

A Caesarean section was performed in a healthy secundipara of 26 years of age in the 39th week of gestation, because of severe alterations of foetal heart-rate patterns, signalling foetal distress. Amount and colour of the amniotic fluid appeared normal. A highly anaemic male infant was delivered (BW 2920 g, BL: 49.5 cm, RBC: 770 000/mm3, PVC: 11%). Since perinatal posttraumatic bleeding was excluded by the normal appearance of the umbilical cord and the placenta, transplacental foeto-maternal macrotransfusion was suggested immediately and diagnosis confirmed by demonstrating foetal red cells

Working with the recently available recombinant haplotypes of the rat major histocompatibility complex (MHC)--RT1, we investigated the effect of various types of blood transfusion (BT) on allograft prolongation, including blood identical for the whole RT1 haplotype with that of the donor or for only a part of it. One or two milliliters of donor blood significantly prolonged graft survival in the (LEW X BN)F1----LEW or the LEW X 1W----LEW X 1A combination. The optimal regimen consisted of two BTs given 15 and 7 days prior to grafting; BTs given at day -30 were ineffective. A BT given on the day…

Numerous reports have demonstrated that blood transfusions given prior to renal allografting have an immunomodulating effect that leads to increased graft survival. To determine if blood transfusions would adversely affect the outcome for patients with breast cancer, we examined 226 patients with invasive breast cancer who had a mastectomy and found 65 (29%) had received transfusions. The patients who had transfusions and those who did not were similar in age, clinical tumor-node-metastasis stage, and number of histologic nodal metastases. At a median follow-up of 52 months for surviving patie…

The effect of blood transfusions on the immune response of 46 thalassaemic children was studied. Cell-mediated immune response was evaluated by performing skin tests to specific (streptokinase-streptodornase and candidin) and nonspecific (dinitrochlorobenzene and phytohaemagglutinin) antigens. Antibody response to specific antigen (tetanus toxoid) was estimated by measuring the tetanus antitoxin titre before and after vaccination. No gross impairment of cell-mediated immunity was elicited. The larger proportion of negative phytohaemagglutinin skin tests found in thalassaemic patients does not …

The current situation of the transfusion service in this country has been characterised by small-scale operational level, the lack of regional system and basic components of a single service. There is a great variety in the medical and expert point of view starting from the lack of elementary hygienic and technical conditions, down to developed institutions of the European level. This activity has been characterised for the last ten years or so by an effort to win blood-givers at all cost, to enhance production of intravenous solutions which in some factories have obtained factory production v
