[Anesthesia of the brain stem after a retrobulbar block. Description of 2 cases].

The Authors report two cases of central nervous system complications after retrobulbar block. These complications have a 0.044% incidence in 4500 subsequent cases of retrobulbar blockade studied from 1981 to 1990. The Authors attribute the respiratory arrest and coma to direct access of the anesthetic to the central nervous system along the subdural space in the optic nerve sheath.

The subtemporal and preauricular infratemporal approach to intradural structures ventral to the brain stem.

The subtemporal and preauricular infratemporal operative technique is an approach to the skull base through the anterior portion of the petr … inal root. Combining the two approaches provides direct access to the ventral surface of the entire brain stem from the dorsum sellae to the hypoglossal foramina. Five patients with lesions in the clivus and petrous apex have been operated on via this approach. Details of the anatomical aspects of the approach and its applications are presented.

A case of dyschondroplasia associated with brain stem glioma: diagnosis by stereotactic biopsy.

We present a 24-year-old patient with multiple chondromas of both hands, the pelvis, the left leg, and an associated brain stem glioma. There was no evidence of hemangioma or dyschromia, and the condition was diagnosed as Ollier's disease, a special type of dyschondroplasia like Maffucci's syndrome and Kast's disease. An increased overall risk for development of malignant skeletal and nonskeletal tumors is associated with Maffucci's syndrome. The risk of malignant degeneration is lower in Ollier's disease. A glioma in the pons and the right lobe of the cerebellum was found in this patient. The…

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials in the alligator. Effects of temperature and hypoxia.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded from young alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), and the effects of hypothermia, hyperthermia and hypoxia on the wave forms were determined. The wave form shape was similar to the human BAEP, although extra waves were routinely seen. The responses were highly repeatable and varied in a predictable manner as a function of stimulus frequency, polarity, intensity, and body temperature. Rarefaction clicks produced longer wave form latencies than condensation clicks. BAEPs were present over the entire temperature range studied (0-36 deg

The nucleus of the solitary tract in the monkey: projections to the thalamus and brain stem nuclei.

The projections of the nucleus of the solitary tract (NST) were studied by autoradiographic anterograde fiber-tracing and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) retrograde cell-labeling. Tritiated proline and leucine were deposited in electrophysiologically identified regions of NST. Injections of NST at levels caudal to where the vagus enters the nucleus, from which responses were evoked by stimulation of cranial nerves IX and X, revealed topographically organized bilateral projections to, most prominently, the ventrolateral medullary reticular formation which contains neurons of the ambiguus complex,

Odontoid compression of the brain stem in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis. Case report.

Cervical spine involvement by rheumatoid arthritis is common; brain-stem compression secondary to vertical subluxation of the odontoid in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is rare. Vertical subluxation results from 1) destruction of the transverse atlantal, apical, and alar ligaments of the atlas and odontoid, and 2) bone resorption in the occipital condyles, lateral masses of the atlas, and basilar processes of the skull. Neurological symptoms result from direct compression of the brain stem or from ischemia secondary to compression of vertebral arteries, anterior spinal arteries, or small p…

Brain stem potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of the cochlea in human subjects.

Brain stem potentials were recorded from scalp electrode to biphasic square wave electrical stimulation of implanted electrodes in the cochlea of three patients. Reliable potentials could be recorded that appeared 1.5 to 2.0 msec prior to the customary acoustically-evoked brain stem potentials. The effects of variations in electrical stimulus parameters of rate and intensity were measured. Brain stem potentials can provide objective indices of the effectiveness of electrical stimulation of the cochlea in man.

Possible prevention of brain stem stroke by microvascular anastomosis in the vertebrobasilar system.

Four patients with symptoms and signs of brain stem ischemia due to occlusive disease of the vertebrobasilar system and one patient with similar cerebrovascular disease who was thought to be prone to brain stem stroke underwent a microvascular anastomosis between the occipital artery and the caudal loop of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery. There was no morbidity of mortality and neurologically all patients improved. Post-operative angiograms showed patent anastomosis in all the patients and improved circulation in three. This new operation may prove beneficial in a selected group of st…

Glioma and ependymoma through the lens of brain development, stem cells, and plasticity.

Brain tumors are increasingly understood as having components of a development organization in which malignant cells leverage neural progenitor programs, lineage hierarchies, and circuit interactions that normally shape the developing brain. This review examines how these principles inform the biology of ependymoma and gliomas across the age spectrum, including H3 K27-altered diffuse midline glioma, H3 G34-mutant diffuse hemispheric glioma, IDH-mutant glioma, and glioblastoma. We highlight how tumor identity reflects developmental timing, regional context, and cell-of-origin competence, while

Effects of thyroid disruption on neural cells stem fate in the mouse brain.

Thyroid hormones (THs), particularly T3 and T4, play crucial roles in neural development and maintenance by regulating neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation, differentiation, and survival. In the subventricular zone (SVZ), a neurogenic niche in the adult brain, THs influence the balance between neuronal and glial cell fate. Hypothyroidism disrupts this balance, reducing neurogenesis and increasing oligodendrocyte precursor cell (OPC) production. This can impair central nervous system repair mechanisms and olfactory function. Environmental endocrine disruptors like perfluoroalkyl substances (PFA

Intraparenchymal Chordoma in the Brain Stem: A Review of Surgical Management and Case Highlight.

We present a rare case of an intraparenchymal chordoma in the brain stem of a 69-year-old male with a history of multiple chordoma recurrences. Chordomas are uncommon tumors that originate from notochordal remnants, with intraparenchymal presentations in the brain stem being particularly rare. A 69-year-old male with a history of clival chordoma three years after primary endoscopic resection and adjuvant proton-beam radiotherapy and a recurrence one year postoperatively for which he underwent a second surgery, presented with severe headaches, weakness, diaphoresis, and difficulty ambulating. H…

Encoding of speech in convolutional layers and the brain stem based on language experience.

Comparing artificial neural networks with outputs of neuroimaging techniques has recently seen substantial advances in (computer) vision and … deep neural networks that requires no linear transformations between the signals. We argue that the brain stem response (cABR) and the response in intermediate convolutional layers to the exact same stimulus are highly similar without applying any transformations, and we quantify this observation. The proposed technique not only reveals similarities, but als …
