PURPOSE: We determined whether the association between breast density and breast cancer risk and cancer severity differs according to menopausal status and postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) use.
METHODS: We collected data on 587,369 women who underwent 1,349,027 screening mammography examinations; 14,090 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. We calculated 5-year breast cancer risk from a survival model for subgroups of women classified by their Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BIRADS) breast density, age, menopausal status, and current HT use, assuming a body mass index of 25 kg…

Ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) is a risk after breast conserving surgery, and is traditionally treated with mastectomy. Given the limited literature on outcome after mastectomy for IBTR, we evaluated our long-term data for this group. A retrospective review was conducted using a database of 2101 breast cancer patients at a single institution. Fifty-nine patients underwent breast conserving surgery and experienced an IBTR. Exclusion criteria included repeat lumpectomy or metastatic disease before mastectomy. Patients presented with invasive ductal (58%), invasive lobular (7%), other…

PURPOSE: To determine the patterns and factors predictive of positive ipsilateral breast biopsy after conservation therapy for early-stage breast cancer.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We performed a retrospective review of Stage I-II breast cancer patients initially treated with lumpectomy and radiotherapy between 1977 and 1996, who later underwent post-treatment ipsilateral breast biopsies.
RESULTS: A total of 223 biopsies were performed in 193 treated breasts: 171 single and 22 multiple biopsies. Of the 223 biopsies, 56% were positive and 44% were negative for recurrence. The positive biopsy rate…

BACKGROUND: Although most American women regularly receive screening clinical breast examination (CBE), little is known about CBE accuracy in community practice. We sought to estimate the rate of cancer detection (sensitivity) of screening CBE performed by community-based clinicians on women who ultimately died of breast cancer, as well as to identify factors associated with accurate detection.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We evaluated CBE accuracy among asymptomatic female health plan enrollees in five states (WA, OR, CA, MA, and MN) who received a CBE within 1 year of breast cancer diagnosis and w…

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary myelomas (plasmacytoma) are malignant proliferations of plasma cells in the absence of bone involvement. When they occur in the soft tissue they usually involve the upper respiratory tract and oral cavity. Extramedullary plasmacytomas of breast are uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70 year-old woman with bilateral breast masses underwent excisional biopsy for suspected primary carcinoma that subsequently proved to be a recurrence from extramedullary plasmacytoma of the mediastinum. This was diagnosed and treated 5-years prior to appearance of breast lumps.
CONCLUSION:…

PURPOSE: Mastectomy is the treatment of reference for local relapse after breast cancer (BC). The aim of this study was to document the feasibility and the results of associating lumpectomy with partial breast irradiation by interstitial brachytherapy (IB) as local treatment for an isolated ipsilateral BC local recurrence (LR).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 1975 and 1996 at Marseille and Nice Cancer Institutes, 4026 patients received lumpectomy and radiotherapy (RT) (50-80 Gy) for a localized breast cancer of which 473 presented a LR. Among these patients, 69 (14.6%) received a second lumpec…

The Advanced Breast Biopsy Instrumentation (ABBI) system combines a cylindrical single-use biopsy device with digital stereotactic imaging that achieves targeting of radiographic lesions to +/- 1 mm. This allows complete removal of specimens in a one-step procedure that does not involve separate trips to radiology and then surgery. The ABBI system improves on core needle biopsy and fine-needle aspiration and may reduce the need for open biopsy. The authors' initial 34 cases utilizing the ABBI system were reviewed. The accuracy of specimen targeting, the success rate of lesion removal, and oper…

We varied the softness and nodularity of silicone breast models to assess the effects of age-related breast tissue characteristics on lump detection. In two sets of six silicone breast models manufactured to simulate premenopausal and postmenopausal breast tissue, respectively, 82 internal medicine attending and housestaff physicians more readily detected lumps among models simulating older breast tissue. The proportion of models with one or more false-positive findings was higher among models simulating postmenopausal breast tissue. We conclude that age-related changes in breast tissue most l…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a non-invasive form of breast cancer with increasing incidence in recent decades. Early detection and accurate staging of DCIS are crucial for determining the appropriate treatment approach, with breast-conserving surgery (BCS) being the standard when feasible. The role of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in DCIS remains controversial, particularly in relation to its potential to identify incidental findings that may influence surgical decisions. This study aims to evaluate the clinical value of preoperative MRI in patients w…

Desmoid tumors are benign mesenchymal neoplasms that originate from muscular fasciae and aponeuroses. Breast involvement is exceptionally rare, accounting for less than 0.2% of all breast tumors. A 41-year-old woman with a history of right-sided invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) diagnosed in 2022 underwent breast-conserving surgery (BCS) and axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), followed by adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and daily tamoxifen (20 mg). The tumor measured 3.5 cm at its greatest dimension, was grade 2, estrogen receptor (ER)-positive, progesterone receptor (PR)-positive, HER2 …

BACKGROUND: Pilomatricoma, also known as calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe, is a benign tumor originating from human hair follicle stem cells and commonly observed in adolescents. Pilomatricomas can arise in any region with hair follicles, typically presenting as solitary lesions, predominantly affecting the facial region. Clinically, they manifest as firm, painless nodules, with both pathological and ultrasonographic findings often revealing calcifications. We report a rare case of pilomatricoma located on the breast, which exhibits characteristics are similar to breast cancer. Combining wit…

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Male breast cancer is a rare disease that accounts for less than 1 % of all breast cancer cases. The most common surgical treatment for male breast cancer is mastectomy, but breast-conserving surgery has been performed increasingly in recent years. This report describes a case of male breast cancer that was treated by breast-conserving surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old man visited our hospital complaining of a painless mass in his left breast. Imaging revealed a well-defined cystic mass, aspiration of which revealed bloody fluid. Cytology was inconclusive,…

BACKGROUND: Due to the declining mortality rates of breast carcinoma and the rising incidence of risk-reducing mastectomies, enhancing the quality of life after breast reconstructions has become an increasingly important goal. The advantages of lightweight breast implants (B-Lite®) may significantly contribute to achieving this objective. This study aims to investigate whether lightweight implants are suitable for patients undergoing breast reconstruction and could improve the quality of life in comparison to conventional implants.
METHODS: In this study, we retrospectively analyzed 48 patien…

A better understanding of tumor biology and new drugs have led to significant changes in the management of breast cancer (BC). Radical mastectomy, which had been the treatment for BC for more than a century, was based on the hypothesis that BC is a local-regional disease. In the 1970s, Fisher's studies showed that cancer cells could reach the systemic circulation without passage through the regional lymphatic system. Multidisciplinary treatment of BC, which was now considered a systemic disease, was started and radical mastectomy was replaced by breast-conserving surgery (BCS)+, axillary disse…
