Ninety-one female bulimic outpatients received lithium carbonate or placebo on a random basis, after being separated into depressed and nondepressed subgroups, in an 8-week double-blind trial. Sixty-eight patients who completed the study experienced a significant decrease in bulimic episodes after the 8 weeks. Lithium, in a dosage yielding relatively low plasma levels, was not more effective than placebo. However, depression and other psychopathologies decreased with improvement in bulimic behavior.

This article presents the oral situation of 11 anorectic and 41 bulimic patients and compares it with 50 healthy control persons. While patients with an eating disorder showed less signs of gingival inflammation (SBI: anorexia: 14.6%; bulimia: 12.5%; controls: 44.7%), they had clearly more enamel erosions than healthy control persons. In 27 of 41 bulimic patients a bilateral swelling of the parotid gland was found. A significant correlation between the parotid enlargement and enamel erosion exists in bulimic patients with an anorectic prephase. Patients with an eating disorder had higher level…

To determine the natural history of delayed gastric emptying of solid foods in anorexia nervosa (AN), gastric emptying was assessed by scintigraphy in 20 consecutive inpatients; eight had restrictive AN, ten had both AN and bulimia nervosa (BN), and two BN alone. Initial gastric half-emptying time (HET) exceeded 110 min (the upper limit of normal for the laboratory) in 16; their body mass index ranged from 11.7 to 18.1. HET showed a significant negative correlation with body mass (r = 0.71; p less than 0.001) but not age, duration of illness or use of psychotropic medication. Fourteen patients…

A controlled trial comparing family therapy with individual supportive therapy in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa was undertaken. Eighty patients (57 with anorexia nervosa; 23 with bulimia nervosa) were first admitted to a specialized unit to restore their weight to normal. Before discharge, they were randomly allocated to family therapy or the control treatment (individual supportive therapy). After one year of psychological treatment, they were reassessed, using body weight, menstrual function, and ratings on the Morgan and Russell scales. Family therapy was found to be more effective t…

Recent reports have indicated that the incidence of anorexia nervosa and bulimia has increased over the last several years. Both of these syndromes present serious treatment challenges to clinicians and in an effort to deal more effectively with these disorders several pharmacological interventions have been attempted. This article reviews the range of pharmacological interventions used with anorexia nervosa and bulimia patients. The purpose of the review is to present our current knowledge regarding the efficacy of these medications and to offer methodological recommendations that will enhanc…

OBJECTIVE: The oscillations between binge eating, purging, and dieting in bulimia nervosa (BN) may produce substantial within-subject weight variability. Although weight variability has been predictive of eating- and weight-related variables in community samples, it has not been empirically examined in eating disorders. The current study examined cross-sectional and prospective associations between weight variability and BN pathology.
METHOD: Four weights were collected over an average of 42.02 days, and weight variability was calculated as the root mean square error around each individual's …

OBJECTIVE: Negative affect is a precipitant for binge eating in bulimia nervosa (BN). The purpose of the current study was to examine the effect of negative affect on food choices on a more granular level among individuals with BN using a computerized Food Choice Task.
METHOD: Individuals with BN (n = 25) and healthy controls (HC, n = 21) participated in a computerized Food Choice Task following negative and neutral affect inductions, across two study sessions. During the task participants rated high and low-fat food items for Healthiness and Tastiness. Individuals then made a series of choic…

Women with bulimia nervosa (BN; n = 21) and healthy controls (HC; n = 24) participated in the study. There were no group differences with regards to perceptual confidence at baseline F(1, 43) = 0.5, p = 0.48, ηp2 = 0.01, but a significant difference was observed post- …

Many patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) also meet criteria for a lifetime alcohol use disorder (AUD). In order to understand possible mechanisms contributing to the co-occurrence and perpetuation of these disorders, this study investigated the importance of impulsivity and test meal intake among patients with BN by comparing women with BN only (n = 18), BN and current/past AUDs (n = 13), and healthy controls (n = 12). All participants completed assessments of eating disorder symptoms, frequency of alcohol use, binge eating, and purging via questionnaires and semi-structured interviews over two…

Of the eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are the ones that have made adolescent patients-often females and aged younger and younger-seek for help. This help is provided through a multidisciplinary treatment involving psychiatrists, psychologists and dietists. Psychotherapy has shown to be an efficient component for these patients' improvement. The present article aims at presenting a proposal of psychotherapeutic treatment based on a cognitive-constructivist approach.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) frequently endorse risky behaviors such as self-harm and substance use. However, no studies of BN to date have examined factors associated with engaging in individual or co-occurring risky behaviors. Given that individuals with BN often have personality psychopathology, which has been linked to symptoms and course of illness, this study sought to examine how personality may differentiate engagement in risky behaviors among BN individuals.
METHOD: A sample of 133 women with BN completed self-report measures of personality psychopathology at base…

INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence indicates binge eating, defined as the consumption of an abnormally large amount of food accompanied by a sense of loss of control, is an important public health problem. Although psychotherapy may be effective, not all patients respond adequately.
AREAS COVERED: This article provides an overview of bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED), the two conditions characterized by recurrent binge eating as a core feature, and reviews studies of specific medications in treating patients with BN or BED, focusing on randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

OBJECTIVE: It is possible that disturbances of systems modulating reward may contribute to a vulnerability to develop an eating disorder.
METHOD: This hypothesis was tested by assessing functional magnetic resonance brain imaging response to a monetary reward task known to activate the anterior ventral striatum (AVS), a region implicated in motivational aspects toward stimuli. To avoid the confounding effects of malnutrition, 10 women who had recovered from bulimia nervosa (BN) were compared with 10 healthy comparison women (CW).
RESULTS: For the AVS, CW distinguished positive and negative f…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation was to examine differences in personality dimensions among individuals with bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, non-binge eating obesity, and a normal-weight comparison group as well as to determine the extent to which these differences were independent of self-reported depressive symptoms.
METHOD: Personality dimensions were assessed using the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire in 36 patients with bulimia nervosa, 54 patients with binge eating disorder, 30 obese individuals who did not binge eat, and 77 normal-weight comparison partici…

Knowledge about eating disorders influences lay people's ability to recognize individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) and refer them to professional treatment. We assessed mental models (stored knowledge) of AN and BN in 106 college students. Results indicated that most students have general, but not specific, information about AN and BN's symptoms, consequences, causes, duration, and cures. They also believe that people with eating disorders tend to be young, White women. These findings suggest that lay recognition of eating disorders may be based primarily on observat…
