Prenatal diagnosis and delivery of megalencephaly-capillary malformation syndrome.

Hemimegalencephaly (HME) is a rare neurological diagnosis defined as hamartomatous overgrowth of one cerebral hemisphere. The hypothesised pathogenesis is due to an increased number or size of neural cells; however, the exact mechanism can vary widely, depending on the underlying aetiology. We report a case outlining the prenatal diagnostic process and obstetric considerations for delivering an infant with HME secondary to megalencephaly-capillary malformation syndrome. After diagnosis, our patient was induced and delivered at 37 weeks of gestation via operative vaginal delivery. To our knowle

Capillary-Mediated Vitrification: Preservation of mRNA at Elevated Temperatures.

RNA is a fundamental tool for molecular and cellular biology research. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has proved it is also invaluable in vaccine development. However, the need for cold storage to maintain RNA integrity and the practical and economic burden associated with cold chain logistics highlight the need for new and improved preservation methods. We recently showed the use of capillary-mediated vitrification (CMV), as a tool for stabilizing temperature-sensitive enzymes. Here, we demonstrate the use of CMV as a method to preserve mRNA. The CMV process was performed by formulating a green

Capillary hemangioma of the sphenoid sinus with intrasellar and parasellar extensions.

Capillary hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors usually diagnosed in infancy and involving skin and soft tissues. We report a rare case of an adult capillary hemangioma of the left sphenoid sinus extending into the intrasellar and parasellar regions. A 71-year-old woman presented with complaints of headaches and diplopia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a T2-hyperintense mass-like lesion involving the left posterior ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses and left cavernous sinus, that had extended into the intrasellar and parasellar regions. Dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed en

KRIT1-positive hyperkeratotic cutaneous capillary venous malformation.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) may present in sporadic or familial forms, with different cutaneous manifestations including deep blue nodules, capillary malformations, and hyperkeratotic cutaneous capillary venous malformations (HCCVM). We report the case of an infant with a KRIT1-positive HCCVM associated with familial CCM. Moreover, histopathology showed positive immunohistochemical stain with GLUT1, further expanding the differential diagnosis of GLUT1-positive vascular anomalies.

Analysis of cyanide using fluorogenic derivatization and capillary electrophoresis.

Samples containing cyanide were incubated at 85 °C in the presence of the fluorogenic reagent 3-(2-furoyl)quinoline-2-carboxaldehyde (FQ) and glutamic acid, and analyzed by capillary electrophoresis utilizing post-separation laser-induced fluorescence detection in a sheath flow cuvette. The separation time on a 25 cm long capillary at 800 Vcm-1 was 3 min with the fluorescent product eluting at 107 s. Flushing of the capillary was not required between runs. Signal was proportional with cyanide concentration from 50 nM to 1.5 μM. LOD and LOQ were determined to be 26 and 87 nM respectively. As an

A Cross-Sectional Study of Nailfold Capillary Changes in Psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Microcirculation in the skin of psoriasis patients significantly differs from unaffected individuals. Vascular changes precede skin lesions and occur even in nonlesional skin. AIMS: The primary aim of this work was to study the nailfold capillary changes in psoriasis patients, and to compare it with that of controls. The secondary aim of this work was to compare the nailfold capillary changes in psoriasis patients with and without nail changes. METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study of 40 psoriasis patients and 40 age and sex-matched controls analyzed the capillaries of the…

Malignant Conversion of Eyelid Capillary Hemangioma to Cutaneous Angiosarcoma.

Angiosarcomas represent a rare aggressive malignancy of endothelial cell origin that carry a poor prognosis. Here, the authors report the case of a 71-year-old male presenting with a well-differentiated angiosarcoma of the right upper eyelid which arose at the site of a congenital eyelid hemangioma. The patient had undergone multiple surgical resections of the hemangioma previously without adjunctive radiation therapy. This lends evidence to the potential for malignant transformation of benign hemangiomas, and long-term monitoring of benign cutaneous vascular lesions should be considered.

Intracranial, Intra-parenchymal Capillary Hemangioma - Case Report.

We report a very rare case of intracranial capillary hemangioma. This 15-year-old girl complained of pulsating headache in the temple area that aggravated with change of body positions. This headache usually lasted for 5 min and resolved without any treatment. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) strongly suggested cavernous hemangioma in the right deep parietal lobe. She underwent complete resection of the tumor through right parietal craniotomy. Postoperative course was uneventful. Histologic examinations demonstrated a densely grown numerous capillary-l

[Determination of gastrodin activity inhibition on acetylcholinesterase by capillary electrophoresis].

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in elderly individuals. Currently, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEI) are the most effective clinical treatment for AD. AChEIs in natural products may have therapeutic potential and should be screened for use in AD treatment. The authors describe a simple and reliable method for AChEI screening by capillary electrophoresis (CE). A hexadimethrine bromide (HDB) solution was pushed into a capillary (0.015 MPa×10 s) and incubated for 5 min. The capillary was flushed with deionized water for 5 min to remove free HDB, followed by plu

Preparation and Analysis of Quantum Dots: Applications of Capillary Electrophoresis.

The implementation of quantum dots in analytical chemistry has already advanced from basic research activities to routine applications of commercially available fluorescent agents present in sophisticated assays kits. Nevertheless, a further development of new preparation and characterization methods of nanoparticles is still required to increase the sensitivity of analytical methods substantially. Thus, in many bioanalytical applications, important molecules such as DNA, proteins, and antibodies are routinely conjugated with fluorescent tags to reach even the absolute sensitivity, that is, th

Intranasal lobular capillary hemangioma: A series of five cases.

BACKGROUND: Lobular capillary hemangiomas (LCH) are acquired benign vascular lesions of the skin and mucous membranes mostly affecting the head and neck region. Involvement of the nasal cavity is extremely rare and can manifest as epistaxis and nasal obstruction. CASE SERIES: In this case series, we present five cases of intranasal LCH. Three cases are of pregnant women that presented with epistaxis and nasal obstruction. The first was surgically treated during her pregnancy with preoperative embolization of the tumor for vascular control, while the other two patients were treated after deliv

Multiparametric Ultrasound (mpUS) of a Rare Testicular Capillary Hemangioma.

Capillary hemangioma is a rare entity among testicular tumors. We demonstrate the case of an 18-year-old patient with palpatoric and sonographic conspicuous left testicle and negative serum tumor markers (α-fetoprotein, β-human chorionic gonadotropin, and lactate dehydrogenase). Ultrasound (US) imaging represented an isoechogenic lesion with high vascularization in both power Doppler and microflow imaging with central feeding artery. Both strain elastography and shear wave elastography demonstrated a stiff lesion compared to surrounding testicular tissue. While contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CE

The effects of capillary transit time heterogeneity on the BOLD signal.

Neurovascular coupling mechanisms give rise to vasodilation and functional hyperemia upon neural activation, thereby altering blood oxygenation. This blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) contrast allows studies of activation patterns in the working human brain by functional MRI (fMRI). The BOLD-weighted fMRI signal shows characteristic transients in relation to functional activation, such as the so-called initial dip, overshoot, and post-stimulus undershoot. These transients are modulated by other physiological stimuli and in disease, but the underlying physiological mechanisms remain inco

Capillary Leak Syndrome Aggravated by Influenza Type A Infection.

A 41-year-old female presented to the emergency department with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Five days prior to this, she tested positive for influenza type A in an urgent care clinic and received Tamiflu. She also complained of generalized weakness in her extremities. Her initial labs were concerning for a grossly elevated hemoglobin and hematocrit despite adequate fluid resuscitation. Her condition continued to worsen as she developed distal cyanosis in all of her extremities and pulselessness. She was treated with IV hydration, bicarbonate, heparin, vasopressors, albumin replacement, Tam
