Viability and metabolism of cartilage transplanted to physeal regions.

Longitudinal bone growth is the ultimate characteristic clinically desired from the physis. Measuring relatively short-term parameters in comparison with growth may help facilitate investigation of physeal reconstruction. We monitored the viability and metabolism of cartilage transplanted to physeal regions in rabbits. In addition to measuring growth, we performed histochemistry and autoradiographic studies. The results indicated that cartilage transplanted in an avascular fashion could remain viable, synthesize proteoglycan, and be associated with growth (although less than normal) relative t…

Use of cartilage graft for an orbital socket implant.

After enucleation, a spherical implant of some material is placed into the muscle cone to give bulk to the orbital socket area. This also al … ty to hold the prosthesis in place. To correct these two problems, we have found that an autogenous cartilage graft is useful for an implant that will not extrude and that holds its position. Examples of this technique and preoperative and postoperative cases are described here. We have used this technique over the past 11 years and have achieved good succe …

The survival of costal cartilage graft in laryngotracheal reconstruction.

Acquired subglottic stenosis in children is a difficult problem. One of the successful procedures used to correct this condition is an autogenous costal cartilage graft to the subglottis and upper trachea. The fate of the cartilage graft is not known, despite the good results of the procedure. Prompted by recovery of viable cartilage graft from two patients previously operated upon by this procedure, we performed autogenous costal cartilage grafting to the subglottic area of fifty young New Zealand rabbits, with inspection of these grafts at 2- and 4-month postoperative intervals. The purpose …

The versatile cartilage autograft in reconstruction of the nose and face.

This paper deals with the long-term follow-up of cartilage autografts taken from various parts of the body to reconstruct areas of the nose, ear, trachea, eyelid, and other areas of the body which require augmentation, effacement, and long-term support. Our thesis will be that the cartilage autograft is the implant of choice in many of these areas, and that fate of autogenous cartilage is well known and should be given strong priority in facial grafting.

Chronic chondritis of the arytenoid cartilages in a pony mare.

The upper respiratory tract of a pony mare with marked exercise intolerance and respiratory stridor was examined with a flexible fibreoptoscope. Both arytenoids were adducted and distorted. A diagnosis of bilateral chondritis of the arytenoids was made and confirmed at autopsy after surgery to enlarge the rima glottidis was unsuccessful. Other space occupying lesions of the rima glottidis are discussed and theories on the aetiology are postulated.

[Proteolytic occurrences in the metabolism of cartilage and their modification by antirheumatics].

Rheumatic diseases are characterized by the progressive loss of articular cartilage. According to a well established hypothesis proteolytic enzymes take part in these events. The initial attack in an normal cartilage can be exerted by proteoglycanases originating from either chondrocytes or cells from outside the cartilage like neutrophilic granulocytes or macrophages. In rheumatoid arthritis these latter cells are found in immediate vicinity to cartilage and it is assumed that they release their enzymes directly into the cartilage. Lysosomal elastase from neutrophilic granulocytes is a key en…

The fate of articular cartilage in traumatic dislocation of the hip.

The right hips of 69 five-day-old rabbits were dislocated surgically and left to develop in the dislocated position to determine the nature and timing of changes in the hip. Using the left hips as controls, 15 survivors were killed and studied macroscopically and microscopically at two months of age and 14 at four months of age. It was found that articular cartilage of the acetabulum in the dislocated hips showed fibrous degeneration in about 50% of the two-month-old rabbits cases and in all of the four-month-old rabbits. In the dislocated femoral heads the articular cartilage was normal, and …

Ossification of the laryngeal cartilages as it relates to computed tomography.

Ossification of adult laryngeal cartilages was studied using cross sections cut in planes parallel to those used in computed tomography (CT). The percentage of ossification of surfaces of thyroid laminae was calculated and marked variations were found. There was no correlation between ossification and age (all subjects were 50 years or older). Generally, laryngeal cartilages of men were ossified to a greater extent than those of women. Some male cartilages were only slightly ossified, however, while some female cartilages were nearly completely ossified. Inner and outer surfaces of thyroid lam…

Intracellular and extracellular control of the differentiation of cartilage and bone.

This paper provides an overview of one aspect of the differentiation of cartilage and bone, namely, the degree of control provided by the extracellular matrix and microenvironment. A brief review of the diagnostic features of cartilage and bone is followed by a discussion of stem cells, emphasizing how to identify them using cytochemical, ultrastructural or experimental procedures. The role of extracellular matrices in the initiation of differentiation is discussed with reference to the initiation of chondrogenesis in the vertebral skeleton of the embryonic chick and of osteogenesis in the man…

Ultrastructure of cartilage in heritable disorders of connective tissue.

Ultrastruct of cartilage were examined in Marfan syndrome, Menkes kinky hair syndrome, achondroplasia, asphyxiating thoracic dysplasia, mild diastrophic dysplasia and mucopolysaccharidoses I and III. Ruthenium red staining revealed decrease of proteoglycans in cases with Marfan syndrome and kinky hair syndrome, and increase in cases with osteochondrodysplasia and mucopolysaccharidosis III. This morphologic tendency coincided with the result obtained by biochemical analysis of glycosaminoglycan contents in cartilage matrix from cases with Marfan syndrome (decreased content) and asphyxiating tho…

Proteolytic enzymes in human cartilage: the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis.

It is evident that human articular cartilage possesses, in addition to multiple forms of cathepsin D, multiple forms of other acid cathepsins, and, most important, a family of at least four closely related neutral protease enzyme forms, all of which degrade proteoglycan. In addition, caseinase and histonase activities are present. The search for these enzymes in human cartilage ahs been presented in some detail in order to give an idea of some of the problems faced in such research, as well as the hypotheses and hopes that flow from it and prepare the ground for further research. The actual ro…
