The purpose of this study was to characterize the incidence, clinical features, and prognosis of acute pancreatitis in cats with hepatic lipidosis. Of 13 cats histologically diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis between July 1988, and November 1989, 5(38%) were also histologically diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. Twenty-eight cats belonging to a cat rescue society developed clinical signs consistent with thiamin deficiency after being fed a proprietary canned food containing inadequate amounts of the vitamin. Five of the cats died but the others recovered after appropriate therapy. The diagnosis was based on clinical signs, histopathological findings, food analysis and response to treatment.

The cellular responses of 8 kittens (4 inoculated orally with mouse brains containing Toxoplasma gondii cysts and 4 uninfected controls) were studied. Chemical control of respiration in cats after chronic normobaric hyperoxia (NH; inhalation of 100% O2 for 60-67 h) was compared with that of control rats, anesthetized with pentobarbital. After chronic hyperoxia, induction of moderate hypoxia (PaO2 = 50-60 Torr) increased inspiratory time (TI) often without increasing tidal volume (VT). We created acute pancreatitis in cats by instilling ethanol (20 ml of a 40% solution) into the stomach and then perfusing activated pancreatic enzymes through the main pancreatic duct. Edematous pancreatitis developed within 24 h as the enzymes leaked out of the duct into the surrounding pancreatic parenchyma. Seven clinically normal cats were maintained on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) with nothing given PO for 2 weeks. The TPN solution consisted of a mixture of dextrose, amino acids, soybean oil emulsion, electrolytes, and vitamins. Three cats were fed calories in excess of published maintenance requirements, and they gained some weight, vomited occasionally, had oral ulcerations, and had signs of depression after 10 to 13 days on TPN. Using M-mode echocardiography, cardiac abnormalities were studied in 103 cats with untreated hyperthyroidism. In addition, follow-up echocardiography was performed on 24 of these cats to assess the long-term (4 to 21 months) effect of treatment (thyroidectomy or radioiodine) on thyrotoxic cardiac disease. Medical records of 5 cats with blastomycosis examined at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Teaching Hospital from 1979 to 1986 were reviewed. Clinical signs of blastomycosis varies depending on the organ(s) affected, but respiratory tract disease was most common, followed by CNS signs and ocular problems. The clinical and pathological features of 23 cats with systemic opportunistic mycosis--aspergillosis and mucormycosis--are described. The diagnoses were made post mortem by histology. The history and characteristics of the pathological lesions of the 29 cases of feline mycosis described in the literature are compared with this series. It appears that the incidence of such mycoses is increasing.

A cytauxzoon-like agent caused fatal disease in 4 domestic cats from separate, rural, heavily wooded premises in southwestern Missouri.
