Extended Endoscopic Endonasal Approach for a Giant Parasellar Epidermoid Cyst.

Epidermoid cysts are rare lesions which typically grow slowly. For this reason, these lesions are usually discovered when they are already very large. The parasellar location is no exception to this rule and may involve the cavernous sinus or the Meckel cave. We present a 34-year-old female patient without past medical history who was admitted in our tertiary referral center for episodes of diplopia in the right lateral gaze and right trigeminal dysesthesias. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a large right parasellar mass with mixed intensity signal on the T1 and T2 sequences, with

Development of a Weighted Barite-Free Formate Drilling Mud for Well Construction under Complicated Conditions.

Construction of oil and gas wells at offshore fields often involves high formation pressure and the presence of swellable clay rocks in the section. In addition, productivity preservation is also an important aspect. For this purpose, it is necessary to reduce the solids content of the drilling mud. The purpose of this work is to develop, improve, and study compositions of weighted drilling muds with low content of solids, on the basis of organic salts of alkali metals and polymers for the construction of wells prone to rock swelling and/or cavings, as well as drilling fluids for drilling-in t

It must b … oneedle, into which BCG powder could be packaged directly. Viability of BCG vaccine packaged in the caves and the mechanical strength of the powder-laden MNA did not alter significantly before and after more than two months of storage at room temperature. Following insertion of the MNA into the skin, individual microneedle shafts melted away by intersti …

Taking their breath away: metabolic responses to low-oxygen levels in anchialine shrimps (Crustacea: Atyidae and Alpheidae).

Crustaceans generally act as oxy-regulators, maintaining constant oxygen uptake as oxygen partial pressures decrease, but when a critical low level is reached, ventilation and aerobic metabolism shut down. Cave-adapted animals, including crustaceans, often show a reduced metabolic rate possibly owing in part to the hypoxic nature of such environments. However, metabolic rates have not been thoroughly explored in crustaceans from anchialine habitats (coastal ponds and caves), which can experience variable oxygenic regimes. Here, an atypical oxy-conforming pattern of oxygen uptake is reported in…

Diversity of phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Ibitipoca State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Leishmaniasis is a complex of zoonotic diseases that are endemic to many Brazilian states. They are transmitted to the vertebrates by the bite of the hematophagous female sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) vectors. Despite the increasing occurrence of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis cases in large urban centers, their transmission continues to occur primarily in a wild environment and may be associated with professional activities, ecotourism activities, or both. This study investigates the ecological parameters of the sand flies present in Ibitipoca State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. During

Thermal windows on Brazilian free-tailed bats facilitate thermoregulation during prolonged flight.

The Brazilian free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) experiences challenging thermal conditions while roosting in hot caves, flying during warm daylight conditions, and foraging at cool high altitudes. Using thermal infrared cameras, we identified hot spots along the flanks of free-ranging Brazilian free-tailed bats, ventral to the extended wings. These hot spots are absent in syntopic cave myotis (Myotis velifer), a species that forages over relatively short distances, and does not engage in long-distance migration. We hypothesized that the hot spots, or "radiators," on Brazilian free-tailed…

Novel CT-guided biopsy of isolated perineural spread of adenoid cystic carcinoma along the trigeminal nerve masquerading as chronic trigeminal neuropathy.

The differential diagnoses for chronic peripheral neuropathy are broad and diagnosing a cause can be challenging. We present a case of isolated perineural spread of adenoid cystic carcinoma to the trigeminal nerve involving skull base foramina and Meckel's cave in the setting of chronic trigeminal neuropathy and no known prior malignancy. Computed tomography-guided core (CT) needle biopsy was needed to arrive at a diagnosis and a novel approach was required to obtain tissue from the trigeminal nerve lesion at foramen ovale.

Lung cancer presenting with trigeminal neuropathy.

The purpose of this case report is to describe MR imaging and CT findings of a patient in whom the first clinical and neuroradiological manifestation of a metastatic lung adenocarcinoma was unilateral trigeminal neuropathy caused by a presumed metastasis involving cisternal and Meckel's cave segments of ipsilateral trigeminal nerve. MR imaging and CT scan differential diagnosis of expansive lesions of the intracranial trigeminal nerve must include metastases. Physicians and neuroradiologists must be aware of metastases as an uncommon cause of trigeminal neuropathy, even as the presenting condi

Overburden structure fracture evolution and ground pressure behavior under oblique residual coal pillars in thick seam mining.

This study investigates the complex overburden fracture movements and mining pressure evolution induced by obliquely arranged lower-slice extraction passing through residual upper-slice coal pillars in split-level fully mechanized top coal caving of extremely thick coal seams. Through integrated physical simulation, FLAC3D numerical analysis, and field monitoring, the instability mechanisms of residual pillars and their impact on strata behavior were elucidated. The internal and external fields and the evolution characteristics of the overlying strata and structure in the inclined and lower-sl

Mutations in the albinism gene oca2 alter vision-dependent prey capture behavior in the Mexican tetra.

Understanding the phenotypic consequences of naturally occurring genetic changes, as well as their impact on fitness, is fundamental to understanding how organisms adapt to an environment. This is critical when genetic variants have pleiotropic effects, as determining how each phenotype impacted by a gene contributes to fitness is essential to understand how and why traits have evolved. A striking example of a pleiotropic gene contributing to trait evolution is the oca2 gene, coding mutations in which underlie albinism and reductions of sleep in the blind Mexican cavefish, Astyanax mexicanus.

Endoscopic transorbital approach for skull base lesions: a report of 16 clinical cases.

Due to the deep location, complex anatomy, and adjacent vital neurovascular structures, skull base surgery is challenging and requires specific approaches. The emerging endoscopic transorbital approach (eTOA) technique provides a new approach to the orbital content, spheno-orbital region, lateral cavernous sinus, and Meckel's cave. In this study, the clinical utility and effectiveness of the eTOA are reported. Sixteen cases who underwent the eTOA were included in the current study. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to tumor location: Group A (intraorbital, 6 cases), group B (sp

Combined Transcavernous and Kawase's Approach for Gross Total Resection of a Cavernous Sinus Meningioma.

Microsurgery of cavernous sinus (CS) lesions is generally considered to be associated with a high rate of morbidity and cranial nerve deficits. The success for surgical removal of CS meningiomas is debatable and achieving a good functional outcome with preservation of the cranial nerves is the goal. Surgery of these lesions is challenging, recurrence rates are high, and therapeutic strategies remain controversial. In this video, we present a case of a CS meningioma that extended to Meckel's cave and the posterior fossa in a 46-year-old woman with history of a left-sided cerebellopontine angle

Unravelling unknown cyanobacteria diversity linked with HCN production.

Cyanobacteria are ecologically versatile microorganisms, occupying diverse habitats, from terrestrial caves to coastal shores and from brackish lakes to thermal springs. Cyanobacteria have also been linked with hydrogen cyanide (HCN), mainly for their ability to catabolize HCN by the nitrogenase enzyme. In this context, we sampled disparate environments, spanning from Canary Islands and Iceland to Estonia and Cyprus. Eighty-one (81) strains were isolated and characterised with taxonomic indices and molecular markers (16S-23S rRNA region and cpcBA region), whilst their ability to produce HCN wa…

Intraoperative CT for Neuronavigation Guidance and Confirmation of Foramen Ovale Cannulation for Glycerol Trigeminal Rhizotomy: A Technical Report and Case Series.

Glycerol rhizotomy was originally described as an initial surgical treatment for trigeminal neuralgia after the failure of medical therapy. Here we describe its use as a salvage procedure, typically after failure of multiple other modalities including microvascular decompression, stereotactic radiosurgery, and/or other percutaneous procedures. Foramen ovale cannulation as a "salvage procedure" may be complicated by lack of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) return despite adequate cannulation of the foramen ovale, making conventional fluoroscopic confirmation of adequate needle placement less certain.

Trigeminal Amyloidoma: A Report of Two Cases and Review of the Literature.

Cerebral amyloidomas, characterized by localized amyloid deposits in the nervous system in the absence of systemic disease, are rare. These typically consist of immunoglobulin light chain (AL)-type, predominantly lambda. Trigeminal nerve involvement is exceptionally rare with only 21 previously reported cases, three with bilateral disease. We report two additional cases of amyloid localized to Meckel's cave with secondary involvement of the trigeminal nerves bilaterally, with protein characterization by mass spectrometry. The patients, both females, 39 and 49-years-old, respectively, presented

Frequency of appearance of transverse (Harris) lines reflects living conditions of the Pleistocene bear-Ursus ingressus-(Sudety Mts., Poland).

Transverse lines, called Harris Lines (HL), osteological markers of recovery from growth arrest episodes, are visible in radiograms of recent and Pleistocene fossil bones. Since on the one hand they mark stressful episodes in life, and on the other are mainly used to trace health fluctuations in prehistoric human communities, I used a cave bear population to check if the processes that could affect the specie' condition were in any way reflected in the bone structure. 392 bear bones from Bear Cave in Kletno (collection: Department of Palaeozoology, University of Wrocław), dated as 32 100 ±1300

The vertebrae and ribs of Homo naledi.

Hominin evolution featured shifts from a trunk shape suitable for climbing and housing a large gut to a trunk adapted to bipedalism and higher quality diets. Our knowledge regarding the tempo, mode, and context in which these derived traits evolved has been limited, based largely on a small-bodied Australopithecus partial skeleton (A.L. 288-1; "Lucy") and a juvenile Homo erectus skeleton (KNM-WT 15000; "Turkana Boy"). Two recent discoveries, of a large-bodied Australopithecus afarensis (KSD-VP-1/1) and two Australopithecus sediba partial skeletons (MH1 and MH2), have added to our understanding

[Outbreaks of occupational acquired histoplasmosis in La Habana province].

INTRODUCTION: histoplasmosis, an infection caused by Histoplasma capsulatum fungus, is considered as one of the main endemic infections in the American continent where there are frequent epidemic outbreaks. Most of the outbreaks have been associated to risky activities in bat-inhabited places. This paper presented two outbreaks of occupational acquired histoplasmosis occurred in La Habana province. METHODS: one hundred and sixteen workers, who performed aerosol-generating tasks in caves, were studied. Samples from the cave soils were taken to assess the existence of the causal agent. Clinical…
