The influence of salicylate or bismuth salts on antibiotic action against Pseudomonas aeruginosa was assessed in broth cultures. Sodium salicylate (2.5 mM) had no significant effect on the activity of any antibiotic tested. In contrast, bismuth compounds (0.5 mM) produced a significant change in the inhibitory activity of several antibiotics against all strains. Using the chequerboard titration method, the activity in combination of beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides was investigated against 24 Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates resistant to these antibiotics.
