Association between air pollutants and blood cell counts in pediatric patients with asthma: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a common respiratory disease in children, and air pollution is a risk factor for pediatric asthma. However, how air pollution affects blood cells in pediatric patients with asthma remains unclear. METHODS: This retrospective observational study, performed in 2007-2018 at a medical center, enrolled non-trauma patients aged < 17 years who visited the emergency department and had asthma. Medical records and blood cell counts, including absolute neutrophil count (ANC), eosinophil count, and platelet count were extracted. The concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, sulfur dioxide (SO2…

No evidence linking sleep traits with white blood cell counts: Multivariable-adjusted and Mendelian randomization analyses.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances in habitual sleep have been associated with multiple age-associated diseases. However, the biological mechanisms underpinning these associations remain largely unclear. We assessed the possible involvement of the circulating immune system by determining the associations between sleep traits and white blood cell counts using multivariable-adjusted linear regression and Mendelian randomization. METHODS: Cross-sectional multivariable-adjusted linear regression analyses were done using participants within the normal range of total white blood cell counts (>4.5 × 109 and <…

Immune Response to Molecular Radiotherapy with 177Lu-DOTATOC: Predictive Value of Blood Cell Counts for Therapy Outcome.

Purpose: In a prior, retrospective study, 76% of patients with advanced neuroendocrine tumors undergoing 177Lu-DOTATOC molecular radiotherapy (MRT) showed their best response within 8 months from the first MRT cycle. In 24% of patients, latency was much greater up to >22 months after the first cycle, and long after near-complete decay of 177Lu from the last cycle. An immune response induced by MRT seems a likely explanation. As a crude measure of immunocompetence, the authors investigated whether blood cell counts (BCCs) may have predictive value for MRT outcome with 177Lu-DOTATOC. Methods: 56…

The combination of CD138/MUM1 dual-staining and artificial intelligence for plasma cell counting in the diagnosis of chronic endometritis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the utility of combination of CD138/MUM1 dual-staining (DS) and artificial intelligence (AI) for plasma cell (PC) counting in the diagnosis of chronic endometritis (CE). METHODS: Two hundred ninety-eight infertile women underwent endometrial biopsy were included. In 100 women, three successive sections were cut from each paraffin-embedded tissue block for CD138 immunohistochemical (IHC) single-staining (SS), MUM1 SS and CD138/MUM1 DS. The prevalence of CE and the sensitivity/specificity in the diagnosis of CE with different methods was studied. These sections diagnos

Counting and Recognizing Single Bacterial Cells by a Lanthanide-Encoding Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometric Approach.

Counting and recognizing single bacterial cells are crucial to the diagnosis of bacterium-induced disease and study of cell-to-cell variability as well as the related antibiotic resistance mechanism. A higher sensitive and selective method has always been desired for a more accurate single bacterial cell analysis. We report a lanthanide-encoding inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometric approach for counting and recognizing single bacterial cells for the first time. When noncanonical alkyne-d-alanine ( aDA) was added to five typical bacterial strains of Escherichia coli, Staphylococc

Opportunistic parasitoses among Egyptian hemodialysis patients in relation to CD4+ T-cell counts: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Some reports are available on the prevalence of opportunistic parasitoses among hemodialysis (HD) patients, yet there is a paucity of data on the association of CD4+ T-cell counts with such infections. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites and Toxoplasma gondii in relation to CD4+ counts among HD patients in Alexandria, Egypt. METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 HD patients and 100 apparently healthy individuals between December 2014 and January 2016. Data and samples (stool and blood) were collected from the …

Elevated absolute NK cell counts in peripheral blood predict good prognosis in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of the absolute natural killer (NK) cell counts in peripheral blood in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). METHODS: A total of 273 previously untreated patients with CLL from April 2004 and October 2015 were enrolled into this retrospective study. We analysed the T cell subsets of all patients and figured out the number of NK cells. Comparisons of NK cell count as continuous parameter in different groups were described using Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis test. Kaplan-Meier method was used …

Clinical significance of peripheral circulating tumor cell counts in colorectal polyps and non-metastatic colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: The presence of peripheral circulating tumor cells indicates the possible existence of a tumor in vivo; however, low numbers of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) can be detected in peripheral blood of healthy individuals as well as patients with benign tumors. It is not known whether peripheral CTC counts differ between patients with benign colorectal disease and those with colorectal cancer. METHODS: Comparative analysis of preoperative peripheral circulating tumor cells counts was completed in patients with benign colorectal disease (colorectal polyps) and non-metastatic cancer of

Cell Imaging Counting as a Novel Ex Vivo Approach for Investigating Drug-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Zebrafish Larvae.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is the most common reason for failures during the drug development process and for safety-related withdrawal of drugs from the pharmaceutical market. Therefore, having tools and techniques that can detect hepatotoxic properties in drug candidates at an early discovery stage is highly desirable. In this study, cell imaging counting was used to measure in a fast, straightforward, and unbiased way the effect of paracetamol and tetracycline, (compounds known to cause hepatotoxicity in humans) on the amount of DsRed-labeled hepatocytes recovered by protease digestio

Low absolute CD4+ T cell counts in peripheral blood are associated with inferior survival in follicular lymphoma.

Host immunity and tumor microenvironment significantly influence follicular lymphoma (FL) outcomes. Lymphopenia has been identified as a negative prognostic factor for FL. However, there is limited data regarding prognostic value of peripheral blood T lymphocyte subsets, especially absolute CD4+ T cell counts (ACD4C) in FL. We studied 127 consecutive FL patients to investigate whether peripheral blood ACD4C or absolute monocytes (AMC) at diagnosis had an impact on FL prognosis. In our cohort, both low ACD4C and high AMC were the parameters associated with inferior progression-free survival (PF…

Improved method to track and precisely count Schwann cells post-transplantation in a peripheral nerve injury model.

BACKGROUND: To optimize survival evaluation of Schwann cells (SCs) in vivo, we tested fluorescent labeling of the nucleus as an improved method of tracking and counting the transplanted SCs at sciatic nerve injury sites in rodents. We also investigated if co-administering cells with the glial growth factor Neuregulin-1 β (NRG1β) improves in vivo survival. NEW METHOD: We transduced SCs using a Lentiviral vector with a nuclear localization signal (NLS) fused with mCherry and transplanted them in the sciatic nerve of rat post-crush injury (bilateral) either in the presence or absence of NRG1β in

Serum total bilirubin concentrations are inversely associated with total white blood cell counts in an adult population.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that serum bilirubin has a protective effect against cardiovascular disease and that inflammation plays an important role in its pathogenesis. This cross-sectional study investigated whether there was an association between blood total white blood cell count, a simple indicator of inflammation, and serum total bilirubin concentration in a cohort of an adult population in Taiwan. METHODS: A total of 2458 apparently healthy adults (1246 men and 1212 women) who attended health examination at a medical centre in central Taiwan were enrolled. We collected ant…

HIV-1 outcompetes HIV-2 in dually infected Senegalese individuals with low CD4⁺ cell counts.

OBJECTIVE: Dual infection with HIV-1 and HIV-2, which is not uncommon in West Africa, has implications for transmission, progression, and antiretroviral therapy (ART). Few studies have examined viral dynamics in this setting. Our objective was to directly compare HIV-1 and HIV-2 viral loads and to examine whether this relationship is associated with CD4⁺ cell count. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective analysis of data from observational cohort studies. METHODS: We compared HIV-1 and HIV-2 viral loads from 65 dually infected, ART-naive Senegalese individuals. Participants provided blood, or…
