PURPOSE: Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death in women worldwide. Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify and develop therapeutic strategies against this deadly disease. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Amniotic membrane (AM) is the innermost fetal membrane, which contains several proteinase inhibitors and expresses several growth factors. Nitric oxide (NO) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory diseases including sunburn and ultraviolet induced erythema. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is up regulated by UVB irradiation and inhibited by TGF-beta and EGF-beta. We evaluated the effect of AM extract on the expression of iNOS mRNA by UV irradiation in HaCaT cell (immortalized human keratinocyte cell line).

PURPOSE: Assessment of the density of endothelial cells after usage of gentamicin in irrigation-aspiration fluid.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 60 patients subjected to extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation. In 30 eyes irrigation was performed with Ringer fluid (group I) and in 30 eyes Ringer fluid with gentamicin (group II) 4 mg gentamicin were added to 500 ml of Ringer fluid obtaining the concentration 8 micrograms/ml. Evaluation of endothelial cells density was carried before operation, 1 month and 6 months after.

In a prospective study of 89 patients the postoperative corneal edema and endothelial cell count was studied after cataract extraction. A double blind investigation was performed as the patients during the first 6 postoperative days were treated with three different types of eye-drops: Maxidex, Pred-Forte 1% or placebo, all containing Benzalkonium Chloride 0.004%. The content of steroid in Maxidex and Pred-Forte was equivalent. We found no significant difference in estimates of endothelial cells in the three groups postoperatively. Corneal edema was less in the two groups treated with steroid.
