The leucocyte-migration-inhibition test was performed to examine 10 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis and 6 patients with linear scleroderma for evidence of cell-mediated immunity to RNA, DNA, human muscle antigen and collagen human type I. An inhibition of cell migration was detected in 6 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and in 3 patients with linear scleroderma in presence of RNA. No cellular reactivity in presence of DNA was observed. Seven cases with PSS, and all 6 cases with linear scleroderma showed a migration inhibition when human muscle antigen was tested.

Cellular reactivity to heat-killed Salmonella typhi antigen was investigated by the leukocyte migration inhibition (LMI) method in 33 S. typhi infected patients and in 32 control persons. In the typhoid group a statistically significant LMI was observed as compared to the members of the control group. A correlation was found between the level of the cellular sensitivity and the time elapsed between onset of the disease and performance of the test. In 69 patients with rheumathoid arthritis (RA): 49 sero-positive and 20 sero-negative for rheumatoid factor and in a group of 20 healthy blood donors the leukocyte migration-inhibitory test was carried out. Heat-aggregated gamma-globulin was used in the culture medium as antigen. Both groups of patients exhibited a significant inhibition of migration, as compared with the group of healthy subjects. However, a significant difference in the mean value of the migration indices between the sero-positive and sero-negative individuals was observed.

An intradermal skin test, to demonstrate a delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction in Babesia equi infection in donkeys, was developed. A skin reaction to B. equi antigen was elicited in vaccinnated, infected and carrier intact and splenectomised donkeys. Progressive systemic sclerosis obviously more frequently appears in men working under silica dust exposure than in professionally not selected groups. Moreover, silicosis and sclerosis frequently occur combined. Pathogenetic association with regard to immunologic patterns may give an explanation for this phenomenon. Sclerosis occuring in the course of silicosis ought to be included when impairment for compensation purposes is taken into consideration.
