[Titanium oxide ceramic as an implantation material in otosurgery: animal experimental results and surgical technique].

BACKGROUND: For the experimental animal study to evaluate a new ossicular chain replacement prosthesis, we developed a new technique for surgical implantation into the middle ear of rabbits. The selection of the species was based on its similarity to human middle ear anatomy and the favored, standardized, microsurgical approach to the middle ear cavity. METHOD: For the study we included a total of 34 approximately 6-month-old female white rabbits (New Zealand) with a weight of 3.2 to 4.4 kg. The implants used were constructed of ceramic materials TiO(2) (titania) with different pore size. Dir

Extensive metallosis and necrosis in failed prostheses with cemented titanium-alloy stems and ceramic heads.

We describe three prostheses with cemented titanium-alloy stems and Al2O3 ceramic femoral heads which had to be revised after a mean period of implantation of 78 months. In each case, the neck of the prosthesis had been so severely worn that the profile was elliptical rather than circular. There was severe metallosis of the periprosthetic tissues. Metal particles isolated from the tissues were approximately one nanometre in size and the ratios of titanium, aluminium and vanadium in the particles were the same as in the original alloy. Histologically, the high concentration of metal particles m

Macroporous calcium phosphate ceramic: a prospective study of 106 cases in lumbar spinal fusion.

Macroporous biphasic calcium phosphate (MBCP, Triosite) is well known for its safety, absence of allergenicity, and excellent bone-bonding capacity, and it has been widely used as a bone graft substitute in orthopaedic, ENT, and dental surgery. This study investigates the clinical performance of this synthetic porous ceramic in a series of 106 patients, mainly with degenerative spine aetiologies (95/106) and with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. All patients were treated with posterior correction involving the semi-rigid New Orleans instrumentation. Spinal fusion was always performed using MBCP

Results of endoprosthetic hip joint replacement with the aluminum ceramic-metal composite prosthesis "Lindenhof".

The first clinical results of the Lindenhof ceramic-metal composite prosthesis implanted in our hospital in Freiburg are presented. We observed that same favorable early results as the conventional prostheses in a correct position. The implants are incorporated into the bone within 8-12 weeks. The radiographic films show the adaptation of the supporting bone around the ceramic socket. We explain the failures due to our initial lack of technical experience and/or anatomical deformation of the pelvic bone. complications caused by the post-operative treatment during the 12 weeks following surgery

A Dual-mode Ultrasound Transducer Based on Textured Ceramic for Image-guided Interstitial Ablationn.

Ultrasound image-guided interstitial ablation is an economical and effective way in the management of unresectable tumors and other pathologically compromised tissues. However, in clinical practice, extracorporeal ultrasound imaging guidance presents challenges in target localization, while interstitial ultrasound imaging increases system complexity. The integrated dual-mode transducer that combines imaging and therapeutic capabilities emerges as an optimal solution. Due to inherent limitations of piezoelectric materials-such as the trade-offs among piezoelectric and dielectric properties-conv

Ceramic Membrane Ultrafiltration for Biogenic Elemental Sulfur Recovery: Performance Optimization and Fouling Analysis.

Biological sulfate removal in mining wastewater generates recoverable elemental sulfur particles that require efficient downstream separation. This study evaluated ceramic membrane ultrafiltration for separating biogenic sulfur from membrane biofilm reactor effluent's supernatant using 50-, 150-, and 300-kDa membranes under varying transmembrane pressure and crossflow velocity. All conditions achieved high sulfur rejection (95.9%-98.1%), whereas normalized flux declined to 0.06-0.26, showing that hydraulic performance was controlled by fouling rather than particle retention. Response-surface a

In Situ Formation of Y2Si2O7-Corundum-Mullite Ceramic Composites with Enhanced Thermal Shock Resistance.

The continuous drive for higher efficiency in gas turbines has led to increased combustion temperatures, making the thermal shock resistance of thermal insulation tiles a critical factor limiting performance. Corundum-mullite multiphase ceramics are widely used in such applications; however, their performance is often constrained by an inherent trade-off between mechanical strength and thermal shock resistance. In this work, a synergistic modification strategy based on rare-earth disilicate phases was developed, wherein Y2O3 and SiC were incorporated into a corundum-mullite matrix to enable in…

Synergistic SA/Pebax composite membranes on ceramic supports for efficient ethanol-water separation.

Efficient ethanol-water separation is vital for sustainable biofuel production, yet conventional techniques remain energy-intensive. This work presents synergistic sodium alginate (SA)/Pebax composite membranes supported on ceramic tubes for high-performance pervaporation. By tuning SA/Pebax ratios (5 : 1 to 3 : 2) and applying glutaraldehyde crosslinking, the membranes exhibit enhanced thermal stability, mechanical strength, and hydrophilicity. FTIR and SEM confirm successful blending and uniform morphology, while AFM reveals controlled surface roughness. Increasing the Pebax composition in t

Evaluation of different monomer compositions in polymer-infiltrated lithium disilicate (Li2Si2O5) glass-ceramic.

This study aimed to fabricate hybrid blocks by infiltrating various resin compositions into pre-sintered porous lithium disilicate (Li₂Si₂O₅) scaffolds and to evaluate their surface characteristics, mechanical properties, and cytocompatibility. Hybrid ceramic-polymer blocks were produced using mixtures of Bis-GMA, UDMA, and TEGDMA monomers, polymerized at 300 MPa and 180 °C. Four groups (BT82, BT55, UT55, UT73) with different monomer ratios were tested. Complete resin infiltration was achieved in all groups. Surface roughness, contact angle, and water sorption showed no significant differences

Increasing both strength and toughness in ceramic-matrix composites via bioinspired porous interphases.

Ceramic-matrix composites face a persistent challenge: the trade-off between strength and toughness. Inspired by the mineral bridge architecture of nacre, we propose a reverse interphase design that contrasts with conventional dense-laminar pyrolytic carbon given the active incorporation of nanopores. Multiscale characterization and simulations reveal a dual reinforcement mechanism: nanopores reduce the interfacial debonding strength and induce crack deflection that protects fibers from brittle fracture. Meanwhile, the resulting rough fracture paths enhance interfacial frictional stress and lo
