Mechanism of osteoporosis in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: experimental scoliosis in pinealectomized chickens.

To clarify the mechanism of osteoporosis in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), we investigated radiological and histological changes in the cervical vertebrae of a chicken thoracic scoliosis model. Forty newly hatched broiler chicks were randomly divided into four equal groups: sham-operated chickens serving as control (CON), pinealectomized chickens (PNX), sham-operated (CON + MLT) and pinealectomized chickens (PNX + MLT) that received intraperitoneal administration of melatonin. Pinealectomy was performed at the age of 3 days, and the chickens were killed at 2 months of age. Postmortem X…

hRAD30 mutations in the variant form of xeroderma pigmentosum.

The sauropterygian clade Plesiosauria arose in the Late Triassic and survived to the very end of the Cretaceous. Plesiosauria evolved the gr … ryptoclidus eurymerus. We model the mobility in a single motion segment, consisting of two adjacent cervical vertebrae and the joints connecting them. Based on the model with a maximum intervertebral spacing of 3 mm, we find that in Cryptoclidus, the maximum angle of lateral deflection in the motion segment was 2°. The maximum angle of ventral deflection was 5° and …

[One cases of esophageal cervical spondylosis with pharyngeal foreign body sensation].

The patient was treated as pharyngeal foreign body sensation for six months. Laryngeal endoscopy: one about 1 cm x 2 cm x 2 cm, hard, smooth bulge in hypopharyngeal wall at the plane of epiglottis valley. The cervical MRI showed that the C3-C4 disc herniation and degeneration of the C3-C4 vertebrae. Cervical CT showed the C3-C4 disc osteophyte formation and forward bulge. After orthopedic consultation, the patient was diagnosed as esophageal cervical spondylosis. C3-C4 diskectomy and vertebral interbody bone grafted with plate fixation were undertaken. At postoperational day 2, the pharyngeal

Surgical management of high cervical disc prolapse associated with basilar invagination--two case reports.

C3-4 cervical disc prolapse was associated with basilar invagination and short neck in a 21-year-old man and additionally with an extensive Klippel-Feil abnormality and fusion of multiple cervical vertebrae in a 32-year-old man. The transoral surgical route was adopted for cervical discectomy in the latter case and an additional odontoidectomy in the former case. Interbody plate and screw fixation was carried out in the patient with Klippel-Feil abnormality. Both the patients were relieved of symptoms and remained asymptomatic at follow up. Simultaneous fixation procedure is not mandatory afte…

Experimental cervical spondylosis in the mouse.

A reproducible experimental model of cervical spondylosis in mice was established by means of detachment of the posterior paravertebral muscles from the vertebrae and resection of the spinous processes along with the supraspinous and interspinous ligaments. Mechanical instability in the cervical spine elicited by this surgical intervention accelerated the process of intervertebral disc degeneration, and when extended over a 6-12-month period, induced cervical spondylosis in the mice. The pathologic findings in the cervical intervertebral discs of this experimental model varied: proliferation o

[Double traumatic cervical spine lesion (odontoid fracture and spinal cord injury) and Klippel-Feil syndrome].

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is defined as a congenital fusion of at least two cervical vertebrae. Patients with KFS are known to be at high risk for spinal cord injury in case of cervical trauma even with weak kinetic. We report the case of a patient with C4-C5 and C6-C7 congenital fusion, harbouring C5-C6 post-traumatic spinal cord injury, associated with an odontoid fracture type 2 of Anderson and D'Alonzo classification following a motorbike accident.

Chronic Atlantoaxial Luxation Imaging Features in a Pony with Intermittent Neck Stiffness.

A 17-year-old mixed breed pony was presented with intermittent neck stiffness during regular training rides in the six months preceding its admission. All parameters were within the normal range, except for an increase in heart rate (48 bpm) during the examination. Concave areas were observed at the level between the atlas and axis vertebrae (C1-C2) on both the left and right sides of the neck. Radiographs were taken of the laterolateral, left ventrodorsal oblique, and right ventrodorsal oblique projections in the cranial cervical region. The images revealed severe structural disorders, includ

Parametric study of anterior percutaneous endoscopic cervical discectomy (APECD).

Anterior percutaneous endoscopic cervical discectomy (APECD) is a common treatment for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR). In this study, the effects of various channel diameters and approach angles on cervical vertebrae on postoperative outcomes in APECD surgery were explored. A finite element model of intact cervical C3-C7 was constructed and then modified to obtain six surgical models. Range of motion (ROM) and intradiscal pressure (IDP) were calculated under different conditions of flexion (Fle), extension (Ext), lateral bending, and axial rotation. During Fle and bending to the left…

Attention Gate Based Dual-Pathway Network for Vertebra Segmentation of X-Ray Spine Images.

Automatic spine and vertebra segmentation from X-ray spine images is a critical and challenging problem in many computer-aid spinal image analysis and disease diagnosis applications. In this paper, a two-stage automatic segmentation framework for spine X-ray images is proposed, which can firstly locate the spine regions (including backbone, sacrum and ilium) in the coarse stage and then identify eighteen vertebrae (i.e., cervical vertebra 7, thoracic vertebra 1-12 and lumbar vertebra 1-5) with isolate and clear boundary in the fine stage. A novel Attention Gate based dual-pathway Network (AGNe

Synovial myxoma in the vertebral column of a dog: MRI description and surgical removal.

A 12 yr old castrated male mixed-breed dog presented with a 2 wk history of progressive tetraparesis. Neurologic deficits included a short-strided choppy gait in the thoracic limbs and a long-strided proprioceptive ataxia in the pelvic limbs. Withdrawal reflexes were decreased bilaterally in the thoracic limbs. Signs were consistent with a myelopathy of the caudal cervical/cranial thoracic spinal cord (i.e., the sixth cervical [C] vertebra to the second thoracic [T] vertebra). A mass associated with the C6-C7 articular facet on the left side was identified on MRI of the cervical spinal cord. T

The repair using a fibular graft of cervical vertebral collapse due to renal cell carcinoma: Late results with a case report.

The most common cause of spinal tumors is metastases, but the cervical vertebra is the least common region of spinal metastasis, and relatively, little is published about surgery in metastasis to the cervical vertebra. While spinal metastasis is most often caused by neoplasms originating from the lung, breast, and prostate, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) metastasis is very rare. A 47-year-old patient introduced here presented with severe pain spontaneously on his neck and in his arm. In the radiology of the patient without neurological deficit, a pathologic vertebral collapse was detected in the C

Surgical anatomy of the cervical sympathetic trunk.

Lack of knowledge of the anatomy of the cervical sympathetic trunk (CST) may complicate surgical procedures on the cervical spine. This study aims to define linear and angular relations of the CST with respect to consistent structures around it, including the number and size of the cervical ganglia, the distances between the CST and the longus colli muscle and the anterior tubercles of the transverse processes of cervical vertebrae. Morphometric parameters of the 24 CSTs of 12 adults were measured on both sides. The CST had superior, middle, and inferior (or cervicothoracic) ganglia in 20.8% o…

Cervical spine in Pfeiffer's syndrome.

Studies of cervical spine anomalies in patients with Crouzon's and Apert's syndromes have shown an increased incidence of fusions in comparison with that in the normal population. Currently, only small series of patients with Pfeiffer's syndrome who exhibit abnormalities have been published. The objective was to assess the incidence and pattern of radiological cervical spine abnormalities in patients with Pfeiffer's syndrome. All cervical spine radiographs of 22 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of Pfeiffer's syndrome treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital during the last 10 years were stud
