Efficacy of working memory training in children and adolescents with learning disabilities: A review study and meta-analysis.

The effectiveness of working memory (WM) training programmes is still a subject of debate. Previous reviews were heterogeneous with regard to participant characteristics of the studies included. To examine whether these programmes are of added value for children with learning disabilities (LDs), a systematic meta-analytic review was undertaken focusing specifically on LDs. Thirteen randomised controlled studies were included, with a total of 307 participants (age range = 5.5-17, Mean age across studies = 10.61, SD = 1.77). Potential moderator variables were examined, i.e., age, type of LD, tra

The role of phonological awareness and letter-sound knowledge in the reading development of children with intellectual disabilities.

Our study investigated if phonological awareness and letter-sound knowledge were predictors of reading progress in children with intellectual disabilities (ID) with unspecified etiology. An academic achievement test was administered to 129 children with mild or moderate ID when they were 6-8 years old, as well as one and two school years later. Findings indicated that phonological awareness and letter-sound knowledge at 6-8 years of age predicted progress in word and non-word reading after one school year and two school years after controlling for IQ, age, expressive vocabulary, spoken languag

Gaps-in-noise (GIN©) test results in children with and without reading disabilities and phonological processing deficits.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the gaps-in-noise (GIN(©)) test could differentiate children with dyslexia and significant phonological awareness deficits from a group of children with normal reading skills. DESIGN: A prospective study of GIN test performance in two groups of children. Participants were administered routine audiological tests, a phonological processing test, and an auditory temporal resolution test (GIN test). Statistical testing was completed to determine if significant differences existed between groups on GIN test results and phonological processing measures, and to examine pot

The relationship between phonological processing skills and word and nonword identification performance in children with mild intellectual disabilities.

Word and nonword identification skills were examined in a sample of 80 elementary school age students with mild intellectual disabilities and mixed etiologies who were described as struggling to learn to read by their teachers. Performance on measures of receptive and expressive vocabulary, measures of phonological awareness, and measures of word and nonword identification were included for analyses. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that, after controlling for chronological age and vocabulary knowledge, phonological processing accounted for a large and significant amount of unique va

Setting the stage: early child and family characteristics as predictors of later loneliness in children with developmental disabilities.

Children with developmental disabilities often report having few friends. Researchers have tended to focus on social skill deficits, neglecting other potent predictors of children's feelings of loneliness. In a sample of 82 children with developmental disabilities, we examined characteristics of the child at age 3 (i.e., the conclusion of early intervention services) as well as family income and emotional climate as predictors of children's reported feelings of loneliness at school during middle childhood (age 10). Children with lower levels of externalizing behavior problems at age 3 and from

[Effects and limits of acute noninvasive positive pressure ventilation in children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities with pneumonia/bronchitis].

Objective: We have frequently applied noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) to treat acute respiratory failure in children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities. We investigated the features and causes of conditions requiring endotracheal intubation. We aimed to determine whether phlegm expulsion using appropriate breathing physiotherapy with NPPV could avoid the need for endotracheal intubation in such patients. Methods: Between December 2010 and November 2012, 21 children with 51 episodes of acute respiratory failure were placed on NPPV at our hospital. We investigated t
