[Epidemiological profile of rabies in the northwestern region of São Paulo State, from 1993 to 2007].

The epidemiology of animal rabies in the region of Araçatuba, in the northwest of São Paulo State, from 1993 to 2007, is described according to the results from diagnoses made at laboratories in the region, using the fluorescent antibody and mouse inoculation tests. Out of 10,579 samples analyzed, 4.9% were positive (518/10,579). Dogs accounted for 67% of the cases (346/518) and these occurred between 1993 and 1997. Among the other positive samples, 16% (84/518) were in cattle and 9.7% (50/518) were in bats. Among the 42 municipalities in the region, 23 (55%) presented at least one rabies-posi

Parasitism by bat flies (Diptera: Streblidae) on neotropical bats: effects of host body size, distribution, and abundance.

We examined the correlations between prevalence (proportion of infested individuals), mean intensity (number of parasites per infested individual), and the number of bat fly species parasitizing bats in Venezuela with host body mass, distribution, and abundance. Of 133 bat species sampled, 53 species in six families were captured frequently enough to allow estimation of their parasite loads. Over all species and six families, prevalence and mean intensity were uncorrelated with these variables, but the number of fly species was correlated with host body mass. Correlations of parasitism with bo

Australian Bat Lyssavirus: examination of post-exposure treatment in NSW.

Ten years after the recognition of Australian Bat Lyssavirus, it is timely to review the occurrence of the virus in native microbat and flying fox species in Australia, and the effectiveness of post-exposure treatment in humans. Differences between post-exposure treatment protocols adopted by state and territory health departments were examined. In Queensland and the United States of America, post-exposure treatment is withheld in people who are bitten by bats that subsequently test negative for ABLV and rabies, respectively. The good outcomes from these protocols support the revised NSW polic

First account on the larval biology of a Litomosoides filaria, from a bat.

Litomosoides filariae are parasites of unrelated groups of hosts, including bats, marsupials, ancient and modern rodents. The four life cycles to-date elucidated, develop in terrestrial mammals and, at least experimentally, in the mite Ornithonyssus bacoti. A batch of mites was fed on an infected bat, Artibeus jamaicensis captured in Costa Rica, and 18 days later one infective larva was recovered. Its morphology was similar to that of other Litomosoides species, with the characteristic long buccal capsule. These first accounts on the larval biology of Litomosoides from Microchiroptera confirm …

Shape differences in the cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae in rats (Rattus norvegicus) and bats (Pteropus poiocephalus): can we see shape patterns derived from position in column and species membership?

The shapes of cervical (C1-C7) and upper thoracic (T1, T2) vertebrae from the rat and the grey-headed flying fox have been analysed by Fourier analysis to investigate the types of variation present and to try to isolate bones according to position along the vertebral column and species. It was found that the T2 vertebrae of the rat are very different from all others in the study, that C2 and C6 vertebrae are very similar and that the remaining vertebrae split according to species.

A natural focus of Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii is a bat cave.

The natural reservoir of Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii, the etiological agent of histoplasmosis duboisii (African histoplasmosis) is not yet known. We report the isolation of H. capsulatum var. duboisii from soil admixed with bat guano and from the intestinal contents of a bat in a sandstone cave in a rural area, Ogbunike in Anambra State of Nigeria. Eight of 45 samples of soil admixed with bat guano yielded H. capsulatum var. duboisii. Of the 35 bats belonging to the species Nycteris hispida and Tadirida pumila examined, only one (N. hispida) yielded this fungus from its intestinal con

Neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity in the diencephalon of the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus): localized variations with physiological state.

The current study used light microscopic immunocytochemistry to demonstrate and compare neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity (NPY-IR) in the diencephalon of the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) at different stages in its annual cycle of activity and hibernation. Animals were sacrificed in each of three discrete physiological states: euthermic, hypothermic, and hibernating. In general, NPY-IR was abundant in the hypothalamus and sparse in other diencephalic areas. Immunoreactivity was present in a number of pathways which project to or originate from diencephalic nuclei; these include the an

[The sources of histoplasmosis infection on the Isla de la Juventud, Cuba].

The purpose of this work is to report the isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum, etiologic agent of histoplasmosis, from soil in sites inhabited by bats and chicken in the Island of Youth, Cuba. The fungus was cultured from four species of cave dwelling bats too. The identification of H. capsulatum was done by mycelial to yeast conversion and exoantigen test. It is pointed out the epidemiological value of some of these isolations in caves of great importance from the archaeological, speleological or tourist point of view, and the potential risk that they represent to human health. The authors co

Humoral and cell-mediated immunity to Histoplasma capsulatum during experimental infection in neotropical bats (Artibeus lituratus).

The humoral and cell-mediated immune responses of the large, frugivorus bat, Artibeus lituratus, were studied following intraperitoneal injection of 10 or 10(4) viable mycelial particles of Histoplasma capsulatum. Most bats had both cultural and histologic evidence of disease at autopsy. Utilizing a technique designed to measure the volume of footpad swelling in hypersensitive bats a significant degree of delayed hypersensitivity to histoplasmin was evident in both groups 4 to 6 wk after infection. Precipitating antibodies first appeared in the serum 3 wk after infection, but only in the anima

Pan-Viral Sequencing Surveillance Identifies Mammalian Orthoreovirus 2 in United States Wastewater.

Mammalian orthoreoviruses (MRVs) are segmented, double-stranded RNA viruses that infect a broad range of mammalian hosts, including humans. Although MRVs have been detected in wastewater in parts of Southeast Asia, they have not previously been reported in U.S. wastewater. Using the VirCapSeq-VERT pan-viral sequencing assay, we identified MRV type 2 (MRV-2) in a wastewater sample collected in March 2024 from the United States Air Force Academy. Complete genome sequences were recovered for all 10 segments. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the virus clustered most closely with an MRV isolate re

Ebola virus disease: A persistent challenge in global health security.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a highly fatal zoonotic disease caused by a negative-stranded RNA virus of the genus Ebolavirus in the family Filoviridae. Since its first discovery in 1976 in Central Africa, the disease has triggered several large outbreaks with a mortality rate that can reach 90%. Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, or tissues of infected individuals, including corpses, and can also spread in healthcare facilities if infection control procedures are not properly implemented. Fruit bats of the family Pteropodidae are thought to be the natural

High occurrence of pathogenic Leptospira in vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in Brazil.

This study investigated the occurrence of pathogenic Leptospira in urban and rural bats from São Paulo State, Brazil. Kidney samples from 203 bats representing 13 species were screened by real-time PCR targeting the lipL32 gene. Positive samples were further characterized by conventional PCR targeting the lipL32 gene followed by DNA sequencing. Spatial analyses were performed to evaluate possible associations between Leptospira detection, cattle density, and land-use characteristics. Leptospira DNA was detected in 42.6% (43/101) of rural vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus), whereas all 102 urban

Molecular Surveillance for Potential Zoonotic Pathogens in Troglophilus Bats: Detection and Molecular Characterization of Bat Coronaviruses in Southern Italy.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has renewed interest in bats, as they are natural hosts for numerous viruses, some of which have crossed species boundaries. Despite continued efforts in the past, the ecology of bat-related viruses in a significant part of national territories, such as Italy, remains largely unexplored. Herein, we describe the detection and molecular characterization of bat coronaviruses, identified during a viral survey on selected potential zoonotic pathogens (lyssavirus and coronaviruses) carried out in Sicily, southern Italy. A total number of 330 samples were collected from 1
