Pelvic infection after elective abortion associated with Chlamydia trachomatis.

Two groups in Denmark and Sweden, totalling 943 healthy women in the first trimester of pregnancy who were undergoing elective abortion, were examined in a prospective study. Group 1 consisted of 432 women from Denmark, all examined prior to and 2 weeks after the operation. At the first examination, samples were taken from the cervix for the isolation of chlamydiae and gonococci. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 23 (5.3%) of the women. Postoperatively, 15 patients developed acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Five of these patients harbored C trachomatis before the operation, and a

Infection of untreated primary human amnion monolayers with Chlamydia trachomatis.

For development of a laboratory model for chlamydial infection of the human genital tract, untreated primary human epithelial cell monolayers, prepared from each of four placentas, were infected with a stock strain of Chlamydia trachomatis isolated from the nasopharynx of an infant with pneumonia. Infectivity titrations were performed with use of standard procedures of chlamydial inoculation, and inclusions grown in amnion cell monolayers and in McCoy cells were measured versus infectious units inoculated. By linear regression analysis, untreated human amnion cells (y = 0.948x + 4.63, r = 0.92

Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae rectal infections: Interplay between rectal microbiome, HPV infection and Torquetenovirus.

Men having sex with men (MSM) represent a key population, in which sexually transmitted rectal infections (STIs) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) are very common and linked to significant morbidity. Investigating the anorectal microbiome associated with rectal STIs holds potential for deeper insights into the pathogenesis of these infections and the development of innovative control strategies. In this study, we explored the interplay at the rectal site between C. trachomatis, N. gonorrhoeae, HR-HPV infection, and the anorectal microbi

Assessment of evidence for or against contributions of Chlamydia pneumoniae infections to Alzheimer's disease etiology.

Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, was first formally described in 1907 yet its etiology has remained elusive. Recent proposals that Aβ peptide may be part of the brain immune response have revived longstanding contention about the possibility of causal relationships between brain pathogens and Alzheimer's disease. Research has focused on infectious pathogens that may colonize the brain such as herpes simplex type I. Some researchers have proposed the respiratory bacteria Chlamydia pneumoniae may also be implicated in Alzheimer's disease, however this remains controversial.

Chlamydia pecorum gastrointestinal tract infection associations with urogenital tract infections in the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus).

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia infects multiple sites within hosts, including the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In certain hosts, gastrointestinal infection is linked to treatment avoidance and self-infection at disease susceptible sites. GIT C. pecorum has been detected in livestock and koalas, however GIT prevalence rates within the koala are yet to be established. METHODS: Paired conjunctival, urogenital and rectal samples from 33 koalas were screened for C. pecorum and C. pecorum plasmid using 16S rRNA and CDS5-specific quantitative PCR assays, respectively. Amplicon sequencing of 359 bp ompA frag

Systematic reviews of point-of-care tests for the diagnosis of urogenital Chlamydia trachomatis infections.

BACKGROUND: WHO estimates that 131 million new cases of urogenital Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infections occur globally every year. Most infections are asymptomatic. Untreated infection in women can lead to severe complications. Screening and treatment of at-risk populations is a priority for prevention and control. OBJECTIVES: To summarise systematic reviews of the performance characteristics of commercially available point-of-care tests (POCT) for screening and diagnosis of urogenital CT infection. METHODS: Two separate systematic reviews covering the periods 2004-2013 and 2010-2015 were c

Chlamydia trachomatis serotype A infections in the Amazon region of Brazil: prevalence, entry and dissemination.

INTRODUCTION: Chlamydia infection is associated with debilitating human diseases including trachoma, pneumonia, coronary heart disease and urogenital diseases. Serotypes of C. trachomatis show a fair correlation with the group of diseases they cause, and their distribution follows a well-described geographic pattern. Serotype A, a trachoma-associated strain, is known for its limited dissemination in the Middle East and Northern Africa. However, knowledge on the spread of bacteria from the genus Chlamydia as well as the distribution of serotypes in Brazil is quite limited. METHODS: Blood sampl

Chlamydia trachomatis infections and subfertility: opportunities to translate host pathogen genomic data into public health.

Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infections in women can result in tubal pathology (TP). Worldwide 10-15% of all couples are subfertile, meaning they did not get pregnant after 1 year. Part of the routine subfertility diagnostics is the Chlamydia Antibody Test (CAT) to decide for laparoscopy or not in order to diagnose TP. The CAT positive and negative predictive value is such that many unneeded laparoscopies are done and many TP cases are missed. Addition of host genetic markers related to infection susceptibility and severity could potentially improve the clinical management of couples who suffer

Molecular detection of HPV and Chlamydia trachomatis infections in Brazilian women with abnormal cervical cytology.

The question of whether Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is a cofactor for human Papillomavirus (HPV) in cervical carcinogenesis is still controversial. We conducted a molecular detection study of both infections in 622 Brazilian women, including 252 women with different grades of abnormal cervical cytology and cervical cancer (CC; cases) and 370 women with normal cytology (controls). Although Ct infection did not seem related to CC carcinogenicity, women with abnormal cytology had a significant high rate of Ct infection. Therefore, it is important to adopt protocols for diagnosis and treatment of t
