The Abiotrophies of the Retina and Choroid: (Section of Ophthalmology).

(1) Hereditary lesions fall into three groups:-(a) Malformations: Present at birth.(b) Abiotrophies: At birth the tissue is fully differenti … e (acholuric familial jaundice; Schüller-Christian syndrome).(5) The abiotrophies of the retina and choroid are indicated. The solution of the problems they present lies in the study of their general associations. These are discussed.

Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy with Choroid Plexus Coagulation for Infant Hydrocephalus.

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy with choroid plexus coagulation/cauterization (ETV-CPC) is a well-established technique for treating certain types of infant hydrocephalus-a significant global issue. Since its first use by Dr. Benjamin Warf in Uganda over 20 years ago, pediatric neurosurgeons around the world have incorporated it into their practices. The primary benefit of the technique is the avoidance of indwelling shunts, which carry upfront costs that can be prohibitive in many parts of the world, and unpredictable long-term failure rates that are undesirable in any setting. Questions rem…

Imaging the hidden player: Choroid plexus enlargement in multiple sclerosis.

The choroid plexus (CP), one key regulator of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production and immune surveillance at the blood-CSF barrier, has recently emerged as a relevant structure in multiple sclerosis (MS) pathophysiology. This review synthesizes current evidence highlighting CP enlargement as measured with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a potential biomarker of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in MS. We first outline the basic immunological roles of the CP, emphasizing its function as a dynamic interface facilitating immune cell trafficking and cytokine production within the CNS. A…

Characterizing choroid plexus cyst burden across the Alzheimer's disease continuum.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus (ChP) is responsible for producing cerebrospinal fluid, which is increasingly recognized as important in the context of aging and Alzheimer’ disease (AD). However, structural alteration (especially cystic alteration) of ChP across the pathologically confirmed AD continuum remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All data used in this study were drawn from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort. Aβ and Tau PET were utilized to define the pathologically confirmed AD continuum. The number of ChP cysts on each side were counted and the largest cyst …

Choroid plexus imaging in multiple sclerosis management - a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a central nervous system (CNS) disease associated with inflammation, demyelination, and neurodegeneration. It affects more than 2 million people globally, and usually occurs in young adults, three-quarters of whom are women. Importantly, accurate diagnosis and treatment are essential, as this disease can lead to the rapid development of disability. The choroid plexus (CP) is a structure widely known as the main cerebrospinal fluid source. However, it is also involved in immune cell trafficking to the cerebrospinal fluid, which is increased in different …

Atypical choroid plexus papilloma: Diagnosis and differentials: A case report.

Atypical choroid plexus papilloma is a rare World Health Organization grade 2 intraventricular tumor arising from the epithelium of the plexus choroid with intermediate clinical-pathological features between the benign choroid plexus papilloma and the malignant choroid plexus carcinoma. The main criteria for differentiation are histopathologic, with difficulties in distinguishing it from choroid plexus papilloma based on imaging features. We report the case of a 4-year-old female presenting with headaches and altered mental status. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right lateral vent…

Clinical utility of DNA methylation profiling for choroid plexus tumors.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) are rare, potentially aggressive CNS tumors with defined histologic criteria for grading. In recent years, several patients within our practice have demonstrated discordance between the histologic diagnosis and clinical behavior. DNA methylation profiling has emerged as a potential diagnostic adjunct for aiding the clinical approach. METHODS: We reviewed the clinical and pathologic data of all CPTs diagnosed at Boston Children's Hospital from 1995 to 2023. All cases with available material (38/48) underwent DNA methylation profiling at NIH/NCI, and the…

Recurrent choroid plexus carcinoma treated with CyberKnife radiosurgery: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus carcinomas (CPCs) are rare malignant brain tumors primarily affecting children younger than 2 years old. These tumors originate from the choroid plexus epithelium and are a subtype of choroid plexus tumors, which account for 1%-4% of pediatric brain tumors. Although CPCs often show a notably high recurrence rate after surgery, the standard treatment approach remains gross-total resection (GTR) of the tumor, given the lack of clinical data supporting the effectiveness of adjunct treatment options such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy. OBSERVATIONS: A 16-year-old femal…

Choroid Plexus Papilloma Tumor of the Ovary: A Case Report.

This is a case report of a 19-year-old nulligravid patient with a choroid plexus papilloma tumor in a mature cystic teratoma in the right adnexal area. The patient, who had abdominal pain and dyspepsia, showed a 9 cm diameter mass with a solid/cystic component, initially interpreted as a dermoid cyst in the right adnexal region. Mature cystic teratoma is a benign germ cell tumor and is common in women during the reproductive period. However, choroid plexus papilloma is a rare brain tumor. The diagnosis of ovarian choroid plexus papilloma can be made with imaging tests such as magnetic resonanc…

Choroid plexitis caused by Burkholderia cepacia complex after COVID-19.

Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) encompasses opportunistic pathogen with various clinical manifestations ranging from no symptoms to severe respiratory infections and septicemia. Central nervous system infections caused by BCC are rare. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first reported case of choroid plexitis caused by BCC after severe COVID-19. A 67-year-old woman who had been previously diagnosed with COVID-19 presented with a mild fever and headache. Gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging showed contrast effects in the right choroid plexus and encapsul…

The Time Trajectory of Choroid Plexus Enlargement in Multiple Sclerosis.

Choroid plexus (CP) can be seen as a watchtower of the central nervous system (CNS) that actively regulates CNS homeostasis. A growing body of literature suggests that CP alterations are involved in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. CPs are enlarged and inflamed in relapsing-remitting (RRMS) but also in clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS) stages, far beyond MS diagnosis. Increases in the choroid plexus/total intracranial volume (CP/TIV) ratio have been robustly associated with increased lesion loa…

Fetal choroid plexus arteriovenous malformation, masquerading as a neoplastic lesion.

A woman in her 20s, who was pregnant, underwent a routine antenatal ultrasound revealing organised intraventricular haemorrhage and a vascular area in the left thalamic region. Fetal MRI raised suspicion of arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The baby was delivered at 36 weeks via C-section, and initial brain MRI suggested a possible neoplastic lesion.Cerebral angiography confirmed a large AVM involving the left choroid plexus with arterial feeders from the left anterior and posterior choroidal arteries and a large venous varix draining into the vein of Galen. Both arterial feeders were successf…
