A highly sensitive and specific method for staining exogenous chromium and iron in tissues is described. This method is superior to conventional complex-forming methods with regard to its sensitivity and specificity for these metals. The staining reaction is based on the metal-catalysed oxidation of phenylamines. The mutagenic potential of water soluble complexes of trivalent chromium with five different amino acids in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA92, TA94, TA98, and TA100 was studied. All complexes were nonmutagenic at concentrations up to 50 mumol/plate in the strains used. Experiments on 68 rabbits with degree III burn induced by potassium bichromate were made to study and compare the therapeutic effect of subconjunctival injections of autoplasma with heparin and penicillin and instillations of spermaceti oil. Administration of spermaceti oil for the treatment of burns provides a more remarkable clinical effect, contributing to a milder course of burn process.

A detailed analysis was carried out of chromosome aberrations induced by chromium compounds in a lymphocyte culture of persons which were in contact with the compounds. It is shown that the frequency of cells with chromosome aberrations depends on the age and duration of contact with chromium and does not depend on the sex. It was marked that hexavalent chromium compounds have a higher cytogenetic activity. Mechanisms of mutagenic action of heavy metal ions are discussed (taking chromium as an example).

Male rats raised on a low chromium diet containing less than 100 ppb chromium had decreased sperm counts and decreased fertility at age 8 months compared to the Cr-supplemented controls. Decreased sperm cell production and fertility were not apparent at age 4 months. At age 7-8 months the frequency of conception was 25 percent or less and the sperm count of the low chromium males was approximately 50 percent of that of the Cr-supplemented rats.

Sixteen patients with negative routine patch tests were challenged orally in a controlled trial with 2.5 mg nickel, 1 mg cobalt, and 2.5 mg chromium given as salts of the respective metals. A fungal parasite (Saprolegniales) of carp eggs was exposed to hexavalent and trivalent chromium compounds at concentrations identical to those used in a study of the effects of the same compounds on carp eggs hatchability. Comparison of data from both experiments revealed that increased egg mortality and increased fungal growth were cooupled at low concentrations of the compounds. A mechanism for the interaction of a chemical stress and a biological stress on carp egg survival in natural systems is presented.

It is established that potassium bichromate (K2Cr2O7) in chronic and acute poisoning evokes a significant increase in frequency of cells with chromosome aberrations in bone marrow of rats. Mutagenic effect of chromium compounds is not always in correlation with their toxic action. It is supposed that chromium compounds possess the properties of chemical mutagenes of delayed action.

A potentially useful thermochemical cycle developed for the production of hydrogen and oxygen from water consists of three chemical reactions that take place in the temperature range from 400 degrees to 1200 degrees K. The oxidation and reduction of chromium compounds by barium hydroxide and the hydrolytic disproportionation of barium chromate(IV) and barium chromate(V), the reactions which constitute the proposed cycle, have been demonstrated.
