Modeling social cognition in alcohol use disorder: lessons from schizophrenia.

A better understanding of social deficits in alcohol use disorder (AUD) has the potential to improve our understanding of the disorder. Clinical research shows that AUD is associated with interpersonal problems and the loss of a social network which impedes response to treatment. Translational research between animal models and clinical research may benefit from a discussion of the models and methods that currently guide research into social cognition in AUD. We propose that research in AUD should harness recent technological developments to improve ecological validity while maintaining experi

The Cognitive and Behavioural Effects of Perampanel in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Systematic Review.

In children and adolescents with epilepsy, neurodevelopmental comorbidities can impair the quality of life more than seizures. The aim of this review was to evaluate the cognitive and behavioural effects of perampanel (PER) in the paediatric population. We performed a systematic search of the literature, selecting studies published in English including children and adolescents with epilepsy treated with PER. Cognitive and behavioural outcomes were assessed through validated neuropsychological standardised scales. Eighteen studies involving 3563 paediatric patients were included. Perampanel did

Personality traits related to cognitive functioning in patients with functional neurological disorder.

Cognitive symptoms are prevalent in patients with functional neurological disorder (FND). Several studies have suggested that personality traits such as neuroticism may play a pivotal role in the development of FND. FND has also been associated with alexithymia: patients with FND report difficulties in identifying, analyzing, and verbalizing emotions. Whether or not alexithymia and other personality traits are associated with cognitive symptomatology in patients with FND is unknown. In the current study, we explored whether the Big Five personality model factors (neuroticism, extraversion, ope

The COGINS: A New Measure of Cognitive Insight in Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders.

Research suggests that individuals with obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) with lower insight show a poorer response to cognitive behavioral therapy and might benefit from alternative treatments. However, there are inconsistencies in the literature regarding the definition and measurement of insight. This study endeavored to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Cognitive Obsessional Insight Scale (COGINS), a novel self-report measure of cognitive insight in OCRDs. The sample comprised 166 participants with a diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder or body dysmorphic d

Multiple cognition associated multimodal brain networks in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder frequently leads to cognitive impairments, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying cognitive deficits remain unclear. This study aimed to explore multimodal imaging biomarkers associated with cognitive function in major depressive disorder. Five cognitive scores (sustained attention, visual recognition memory, pattern recognition memory, executive function, and working memory) were used as references to guide the fusion of gray matter volume and amplitude of the low frequency fluctuation. Social function wa

Cognitive predictors of response to interpersonal and social rhythm therapy in mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: There has been increasing interest in examining the potential moderating effects that cognitive functioning has on treatment outcome in bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Therefore, the aim of this exploratory study was to examine the relationship between baseline cognitive function and treatment outcome in individuals with mood disorders who completed 12 months of interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT), and were randomised to receive adjunctive cognitive remediation (CR) or no additional intervention. METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with mood disord

Social Cognitive Processes in Children With Specific Learning Disorder: The Importance of Language.

Children with specific learning disorder (SLD) have poor academic skills, but they also experience difficulties with their peers, including an inability to recognize interpersonal conflict, infer emotion, and resolve social conflict. In addition, children with SLD are known to have problems with language. The importance of language to social cognition is well-established in research with children with typical and atypical development. Thus, we review literature that investigates language and social cognition in children with SLD compared with their peers. We also explore the link between langu

HIV-related cognitive disorders in children in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo).

OBJECTIVES: HIV-infected individuals are at increased risk of neurocognitive disorders compared with the general population. Studies suggest that, despite the combination of antiretroviral drugs, HIV infection causes immune activation leading to significant neural damage; however, there is little data on HIV-infected young people in our country. METHODOLOGY: This is a comparative cross-sectional study conducted between November 2020 and March 2021 on two hundred and sixteen children aged 6-15 years, including 106 HIV-positive children and 108 healthy children. Cognitive performance was assess

Cognitive behavioral phenotyping of DSCAM heterozygosity as a model for autism spectrum disorder.

UNLABELLED: It is estimated that 1 in 36 children are affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the United States, which is nearly a twofold increase from a decade ago. Recent genetic studies have identified de novo loss-of-function (dnLoF) mutations in the Down Syndrome Cell Adhesion Molecule (DSCAM) as a strong risk factor for ASD. Previous research has shown that DSCAM ablation confers social interaction deficits and perseverative behaviors in mouse models. However, it remains unknown to what extent DSCAM underexpression captures the full range of behaviors, specifically cognitive pheno

Bidirectional genetic overlap between autism spectrum disorder and cognitive traits.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly heritable condition with a large variation in cognitive function. Here we investigated the shared genetic architecture between cognitive traits (intelligence (INT) and educational attainment (EDU)), and risk loci jointly associated with ASD and the cognitive traits. We analyzed data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of INT (n = 269,867), EDU (n = 766,345) and ASD (cases n = 18,381, controls n = 27,969). We used the bivariate causal mixture model (MiXeR) to estimate the total number of shared genetic variants, local analysis of co-variant ann

A comparative study of cognitive functions between schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SZ) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are closely linked, have a high comorbidity rate, and their differential diagnosis is challenging in clinic. Some studies have found common cognitive deficits in some domains between them. The goal of this research was to compare the cognitive functions of SZ and OCD in order to offer a clinical foundation for differential diagnosis and treatment of the two disorders. METHODS: A control design was used in this study, which comprised 61 patients with SZ, 60 individuals with OCD, and 51 healthy controls (HC). We assessed pat

Cognitive Functions in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Its Relationship with Oxidative Metabolism.

INTRODUCTION: While data on oxidative stress in psychiatric disorders are increasing, studies on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are limited. Although many studies report neurocognitive deficits in OCD, to our knowledge, no study exists examining the relationship between neurocognitive functions and oxidative stress in OCD. This study investigated the neurocognitive functions in OCD and its relationship with OCD severity and oxidative metabolism. METHODS: In our study, 50 OCD patients and 50 healthy controls were included. The groups were well-matched for age, gender, education years, and

Depressive and Biopsychosocial Frailty Phenotypes: Impact on Late-life Cognitive Disorders.

In older age, frailty is a detrimental transitional status of the aging process featuring an increased susceptibility to stressors defined by a clinical reduction of homoeostatic reserves. Multidimensional frailty phenotypes have been associated with all-cause dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), AD neuropathology, vascular dementia, and non-AD dementias. In the present article, we reviewed current evidence on the existing links among depressive and biopsychosocial frailty phenotypes and late-life cognitive disorders, also examining common pathways and mechanism

Cognitive disorders in patients with chronic kidney disease: Approaches to prevention and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and early intervention may prevent the progression of this condition. METHODS: Here, we review interventions for the complications of CKD (anemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism, metabolic acidosis, harmful effects of dialysis, the accumulation of uremic toxins) and for prevention of vascular events, interventions that may potentially be protective against cognitive impairment. Furthermore, we discuss nonpharmacological and pharmacological methods to prevent cognitive impairment and/or minimize the latter

Remote cognitive behaviour therapy for social anxiety disorder: A meta-analysis.

Remote cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) has the potential to improve access to treatment by reducing economic, geographic, and psychological barriers. The aim of this study was to use a meta-analytic approach to examine the efficacy of the different remote CBT methods for treating SAD. A systematic electronic database search was used to identify 31 studies (n = 2905; mean age range: 24.73-41.65 years; mean female representation = 60.2 %). Pooled within-group analyses indicated large effect sizes from pre-treatment to post-treatment (Hedges' g = 1.06; 95 % CI:
