Pathological gamblers respond equally well to cognitive-behavioral therapy regardless of other mental health treatment status.

Data consistently demonstrate comorbidity between pathological gambling and psychiatric disorders. This study compares severity of gambling and psychosocial problems and gambling treatment outcomes in treatment-seeking pathological gamblers (n = 231) based on their self-reported mental health treatment utilization. As expected, participants currently receiving mental health treatment demonstrated the most psychiatric problems, and those with no mental health treatment the least. Although preferred gambling activity differed according to mental health treatment status, severity of gambling prob

Predicting response to cognitive-behavioral therapy in a sample of HIV-positive patients with chronic pain.

INTRODUCTION: The primary aim of this study was to examine the role of patient characteristics in predicting response to treatment in a sample of HIV-positive patients receiving 12 weekly sessions of a CBT-based pain management protocol. METHOD: A pre/post test single group design was used. Pain-related functioning was assessed at baseline and 12 weeks post-treatment using the Pain Outcomes Questionnaire-VA. DATA ANALYSIS AND RESULTS: Multivariate regression analysis showed that higher baseline levels of pain-related anxiety were related to greater improvement in pain-related functioning at p

Child versus family cognitive-behavioral therapy in clinically anxious youth: an efficacy and partial effectiveness study.

OBJECTIVE: The efficacy and partial effectiveness of child-focused versus family-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for clinically anxious youths was evaluated, in particular in relation to parental anxiety disorders and child's age. METHOD: Clinically referred children with anxiety disorders (N = 128) and their parents were randomly assigned to child or family CBT and evaluated at pretreatment, posttreatment, and 3-month follow-up. Twenty-five families were measured before and after a 2- to 3-month waitlist period. RESULTS: None of the waitlisted children recovered from their anxiet

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for women with lifelong vaginismus: a randomized waiting-list controlled trial of efficacy.

Women with lifelong vaginismus (N=117) were randomly assigned to cognitive-behavioral group therapy, cognitive-behavioral bibliotherapy, or a waiting list. Manualized treatment comprised sexual education, relaxation exercises, gradual exposure, cognitive therapy, and sensate focus therapy. Group therapy consisted of ten 2-hr sessions with 6 to 9 participants per group. Assistance with minimal-contact bibliotherapy consisted of 6 biweekly, 15-min telephone contacts. Twenty-one percent of the participants left the study before posttreatment assessment. Intent-to-treat analysis revealed that succ

A comparison of delivery methods of cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder: an international multicenter trial.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the psychological treatment of choice for panic disorder (PD). However, given limited access to CBT, it must be delivered with maximal cost-effectiveness. Previous researchers have found that a brief computer-augmented CBT was as effective as extended therapist-delivered CBT. To test this finding, this study randomly allocated 186 patients with PD across 2 sites in Scotland and Australia to 12 sessions of therapist-delivered CBT (CBT12), 6 sessions of therapist-delivered (CBT6) or computer-augmented CBT (CBT6-CA), or a waitlist control. On a composite meas

Cognitive-behavioral therapy versus education and desipramine versus placebo for moderate to severe functional bowel disorders.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Studies of antidepressants and psychological treatments in functional bowel disorders (FBD) are methodologically limited. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) against education (EDU) and desipramine (DES) against placebo (PLA) in female patients with moderate to severe FBD (irritable bowel syndrome, functional abdominal pain, painful constipation, and unspecified FBD). We also evaluated the amenability of clinically meaningful subgroups to these treatments. METHODS: This randomized, comparator-controlled,

Changes in cognitive and behavioral control after lamotrigine and intensive dialectical behavioral therapy for severe, multi-impulsive bulimia nervosa: an fMRI case study.

PURPOSE: Adults with bulimia nervosa (BN) and co-occurring emotional dysregulation and multiple impulsive behaviors are less responsive to existing interventions. Initial data suggest that the combination of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and a mood stabilizer, lamotrigine, significantly reduces symptoms of affective and behavioral dysregulation in these patients. Identifying candidate neurobiological mechanisms of change for this novel treatment combination may help guide future randomized controlled trials and inform new and targeted treatment development. Here, we examined neurocognitiv

Functional Behavior-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Behavior in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience obsessions and compulsions similar to those specified in DSM-5 for obsessive compulsive disorder yet little controlled research exists on treating these behaviours. Thirty-seven children (7-13 years old) were randomly assigned to a 9-week functional behavior-based cognitive behavior therapy (Fb-CBT) or Treatment As Usual. Independent assessors administered measures pre- and post-treatment and at 6-months. Two primary outcome measures indicated statistically significant differences between groups, with large corrected effect sizes (Hedge's

Internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy for pediatric functional abdominal pain disorders: Parental factors in treatment response.

UNLABELLED: Pediatric functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) are common and associated with impairment. Internet cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) has shown effectiveness in reducing symptoms and impairments, whereas the role of parents is not fully understood. A particular objective of the present study was therefore to assess parental factors as predictors of effect and adherence.Youth aged 8-17 years with FAPDs (n = 87) and parents were recruited by pediatricians to therapist-guided ICBT. Primary youth outcomes were gastrointestinal symptoms and pain intensity. Secondary outcomes: qu…

The effectiveness of Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia on sleep EEG hyperarousal: a multicentric polysomnographic study.

Chronic Insomnia Disorder (ID) is characterized by hyperarousal, a key pathophysiological feature. While Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line treatment, its physiological effects on sleep-related hyperarousal remain underexplored. This study assessed the impact of CBT-I on cortical hyperarousal using quantitative EEG (qEEG) during non-REM (NREM) sleep, with the delta/beta ratio as the primary outcome. Secondary aims included evaluating changes in sleep stability and exploring phenotypic differences in treatment response. Ninety-eight ID patients across five cente

A Conceptual Framework of Digital Therapeutic Alliance in Internet-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: A Qualitative Study.

The therapeutic alliance is a well-established predictor of psychotherapy outcomes. With the advancement of digitization, guided internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) has demonstrated effectiveness. However, the conceptual framework of the digital therapeutic alliance (DTA) within ICBT remains conceptually underdeveloped. Data were collected from a guided ICBT program in China. We conducted virtual individual semi-structured in-depth interviews among a purposive sample of intervention recipients (young sexual minority men, n = 20), and all implementers (counselors and supervisors,…

Pre- and postsurgical anxiety and body perception: the significance of cognitive-behavioral therapy in scoliosis adolescents.

Background. Spinal disfigurement is one of AIS patients’ greatest concerns and the primary objective of treatment. No group has ever evaluated the anxiety and body image disturbances longitudinally in three time points in the course of scoliosis surgical treatment, following the cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The aim of this study was a longitudinal analysis of changes in anxiety levels and to determine their associations with a perception of trunk deformity in females with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) who either did or did not undergo CBT. Methods. The study design comprised of

LLM-powered socially assistive robot-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy exercises: an exploratory study with university students.

Mental health is a significant healthcare challenge, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely used therapeutic method for treating anxiety and depression. However, traditional CBT often requires access to trained clinicians and can be cost-prohibitive or logistically difficult for many individuals. To address these barriers, we developed a low-cost socially assistive robot (SAR) that uses a large language model (LLM) to guide the user through interactive at-home CBT exercises. In this exploratory study, 38 university students completed CBT exercises across a 15-day period using one o…

Patient Adherence as a Mediator of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Outcome in Adults With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Exposure and response prevention (EX/RP) is a first-line treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet many patients fail to achieve full remission. Among the strongest predictors of treatment outcome is patient adherence-particularly to between-session exposure exercises and ritual prevention. However, limited research has examined factors that influence adherence. This study aimed to replicate and extend prior findings by identifying predictors of both treatment outcome and adherence among medicated adults with OCD undergoing EX/RP, and by evaluating adherence as a potential mediato
