Episodic memory enables individuals to encode, store, and retrieve personally experienced events in their spatiotemporal contexts. This review synthesizes current cognitive neuroscience findings and proposes an integrative framework highlighting three key dimensions. First, distinct subregions of the medial temporal lobe (e.g., hippocampus, perirhinal cortex) and large-scale neocortical networks (e.g., ventral and dorsal frontoparietal networks, default mode network) play specialized roles in episodic memory processing. Second, episodic memory representations vary in both content and format, e…

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive decline and distinct neuropathological features. The absence of a definitive cure presents a significant challenge in neurology and neuroscience. Early clinical manifestations, such as memory retrieval deficits and apathy, underscore the need for a deeper understanding of the disease's underlying mechanisms. While amyloid-β plaques and tau neurofibrillary tangles have dominated research efforts, accumulating evidence highlights mitochondrial dysfunction as a central factor in AD pathogenesis.

Oscillatory activity in the cerebellum and linked networks is an important aspect of neuronal processing and functional implementation of behavior. So far, it was challenging to quantify and study cerebellar oscillatory signatures in human neuroscience due to the constraints of non-invasive cerebellar electrophysiological recording and interventional techniques. The emerging cerebellar transcranial alternating current stimulation technique (CB-tACS) is a promising tool, which may partially overcome this challenge and provides an exciting non-invasive opportunity to better understand cerebellar

Physical activity has positive effects on brain health and cognitive function throughout the life span. Thus far, few studies have examined the effects of physical activity on white matter microstructure and psychomotor speed within the same, population-based sample (critical if conclusions are to extend to the wider population). Here, using diffusion tensor imaging and a simple reaction time task within a relatively large population-derived sample (N = 399; 18-87 years) from the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience (Cam-CAN), we demonstrate that physical activity mediates the effect o

More than 150 years have passed since Helmholtz first described perception as a process of unconscious inference about the causes of sensati … tervention strategies. We conclude that predictive coding offers the basis for a unifying theory of cognitive neuroscience, which we demonstrate with several examples linking tinnitus to other lines of brain research.

Multivariate decoding methods applied to neuroimaging data have become the standard in cognitive neuroscience for unravelling statistical dependencies between brain activation patterns and experimental conditions. The current challenge is to demonstrate that decodable information is in fact used by the brain itself to guide behaviour. Here we demonstrate a promising approach to do so in the context of neural activation during object perception and categorisation behaviour. We first localised decodable information about visual objects in the human brain using a multivariate decoding analysis an…

INTRODUCTION: Superficial CNS siderosis was previously almost unknown but is now diagnosed with increasing frequency owing to magnetic resonance imaging. Patients may present with sensory deafness, gait ataxia, various sensorimotor signs and, eventually, cognitive decline. They typically have a history of traumatic brain or spinal cord injury or previous neurosurgery, or may harbour congenital malformations. However, knowledge about treatment outcomes remains scarce.
METHODS: We present a series of nine consecutive patients from a large tertiary neuroscience centre in order to highlight the c

The present review attempts to put together the available evidence and potential research paradigms at the interface of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), sleep micro- and macrostructure, cerebral vasoreactivity and cognitive neuroscience. Besides the significant health-related consequences of OSAS including hypertension, increased risk of cardio- and cerebrovascular events, notable neurocognitive lapses and excessive daytime somnolence are considered as potential burdens. The intermittent nocturnal hypoxia and hypercapnia which occur in OSAS are known to affect cerebral circulation and …

Experimental social neuroscience has shown that being socially excluded is processed in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). We hypothesize that a chronic form of social exclusion resembling one aspect of social stigmatization is associated with altered neural plasticity reflected by neurometabolic alterations in the ACC. To test this hypothesis, a highly stigmatized patient group of heroin addicts (N = 15) during opiate maintenance therapy rated a questionnaire about being stigmatized, and neurometabolic markers in the ACC were determined using (1)H MR spectroscopy. We found a negative correl

Information on the neural circuits underpinning adult attention has been heavily informed by the impact of distinct brain lesions on attentional processes. In a similar fashion, the genetics, molecular, and systems neuroscience of attention can be informed by the impact of developmental disorders of known genetic origin on attentional processes. Here, we focus on three developmental disorders of known genetic origin (Williams syndrome, Down syndrome, and fragile X syndrome) to appraise key findings to date, new developments, and their implications for the neurocognitive development of attentio

Planning is being initiated for the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th ed. (DSM-V). Therefore, the dementia diagnosis criteria in the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-IV-TR (4th ed, text revision, 2000) have been compared with the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (10th revision, 1992). Critiques are based primarily on (a) internal consistency and validity of the classification, (b) historical development of the field, (c) conclusions of consensus conferences, and (d) current knowledge and practi

Naturalistic stimuli, such as movies and narratives, are increasingly used in cognitive neuroscience to map cognitive and affective processes onto brain activity measured with functional MRI (fMRI). Features extracted from movies span multiple levels, from computational visual and auditory inputs to physiological signals and subjective ratings. However, the temporal alignment between these features and the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) response varies considerably, and the commonly used canonical hemodynamic response function (HRF) with temporal derivatives may not adequately capture the…

Understanding how visual information gains access to conscious awareness is a central issue in cognitive neuroscience. Continuous Flash Suppression (CFS) provides a powerful method to investigate this transition by reliably suppressing visual stimuli from awareness. Previous work by Zhu, Drewes, and Melcher (2016) showed that mask frequency influences suppression strength of 2D stimuli, with a peak at 6 Hz. However, whether these findings generalize to more ecologically valid 3D stimuli, and whether CFS strength depends on the eye viewing the stimulus, remains unknown. In this study, we presen…

Seminal studies in animal neuroscience demonstrate that frontostriatal circuits exhibit a ventral-dorsal functional gradient to integrate neural functions related to reward processing and cognitive control. Prominent neurodevelopmental models posit that heightened reward seeking and risk taking during adolescence result from maturational imbalances between frontostriatal neural systems underlying reward processing and cognitive control. The present study investigated whether the development of ventral (VS) and dorsal (DS) striatal resting-state connectivity (rsFC) networks along this proposed

A major scientific objective of cognitive neuroscience is to define cortico-cortical functional connections supporting cognitive functions. Here, we use an original approach combining frequency-tagging and direct electrical stimulation (DES) to test for bidirectional and cross-hemispheric category-specific modulations within the human cortical face network. A unique patient bilaterally implanted with depth electrodes in multiple face-selective cortical regions of the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC) was shown 70 s sequences of variable natural object images at a 6 Hz rate, objectively i…

Objective. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can be used to non-invasively entrain neural activity and thereby cause changes in local neural oscillatory power. Despite its increased use in cognitive and clinical neuroscience, the fundamental mechanisms of tACS are still not fully understood.Approach. We developed a computational neuronal network model of two-compartment pyramidal neurons (PY) and inhibitory interneurons, which mimic the local cortical circuits. We modeled tACS with electric field strengths that are achievable in human applications. We then simulated intrinsic

Homelessness is associated with multiple risk factors for neurocognitive impairment. Past research with people experiencing homelessness has described "frontal lobe" dysfunction including behavioral disorders and executive cognitive impairments. In the current study, 72 adults experiencing homelessness were assessed with a standardized assessment of executive function, and interviewed regarding neurological and psychiatric history. When compared to a control sample of 25 never-homeless participants, and controlling for level of education, there was little evidence for executive dysfunction in

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Delirium, an acute reduction in cognitive functioning, hinders stroke recovery and contributes to cognitive decline. Right-hemisphere stroke is linked with higher delirium incidence, likely, due to the prevalence of spatial neglect (SN), a right-brain disorder of spatial processing. This study tested if symptoms of delirium and SN after right-hemisphere stroke are associated with abnormal function of the right-dominant neural networks specialized for maintaining attention, orientation, and arousal.
METHODS: Twenty-nine participants with right-hemisphere ischemic stroke

A critical question for cognitive neuroscience regards how transitions between cognitive states emerge from the dynamic activity of functional brain networks. Here we combine a simple data reorganization with spatial independent component analysis (ICA), enabling a spatiotemporal ICA (stICA) which captures the consistent evolution of networks during the onset and offset of a task. The technique was applied to functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (FMRI) datasets involving alternating between rest and task, and to simple synthetic data. Starting and finishing time-points of periods of int…
