Upper Limb Motor Improvement after Traumatic Brain Injury: Systematic Review of Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of adult morbidity and mortality. Individuals with TBI have impairments in both cognitive and motor domains. Motor improvements post-TBI are attributable to adaptive neuroplasticity and motor learning. Majority of the studies focus on remediation of balance and mobility issues. There is limited understanding on the use of interventions for upper limb (UL) motor improvements in this population. OBJECTIVE: We examined the evidence regarding the effectiveness of different interventions to augment UL motor improvement after a TBI. METHO

Language learning impairments: integrating basic science, technology, and remediation.

One of the fundamental goals of the modern field of neuroscience is to understand how neuronal activity gives rise to higher cortical function. However, to bridge the gap between neurobiology and behavior, we must understand higher cortical functions at the behavioral level at least as well as we have come to understand neurobiological processes at the cellular and molecular levels. This is certainly the case in the study of speech processing, where critical studies of behavioral dysfunction have provided key insights into the basic neurobiological mechanisms relevant to speech perception and

Behavior is movement only but how to interpret it? Problems and pitfalls in translational neuroscience-a 40-year experience.

Translational research in behavioral neuroscience seeks causes and remedies for human mental health problems in animals, following leads imposed by clinical research in psychiatry. This endeavor faces several problems because scientists must read and interpret animal movements to represent human perceptions, mood, and memory processes. Yet, it is still not known how mammalian brains bundle all these processes into a highly compressed motor output in the brain stem and spinal cord, but without that knowledge, translational research remains aimless. Based on some four decades of experience in th

The Interplay of Oxidative Stress, Mitochondrial Dysfunction, and Neuroinflammation in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Behavioral Implications and Therapeutic Strategies.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) deals with several symptoms, including language and speech impairment and developmental delays. The main brain regions affected could be the prefrontal cortex (PFC) or the temporal lobe. The detrimental features could include oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammation. Most often, these phenomena are interrelated and can lead to one another, creating a vicious cycle. They also influence the regulation of certain genes involved in the pathogenesis of ASD or related behavior. In the brain regions prone to these detrimental features, a cascad

Targeting protein kinase C signaling cascades in alzheimer's disease: emerging neuroprotective roles of aurothioglucose.

Protein Kinase C (PKC), a zinc-dependent signaling enzyme pivotal for neuronal survival and synaptic plasticity, has emerged as a central player in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Dysregulated PKC activity contributes to amyloid-β accumulation, tau-driven neurofibrillary tangles, and chronic neuroinflammation, mediated through key molecular cascades such as NF-κB, GSK-3β, and MAPK. Notably, conditions such as osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis further illustrate how chronic cytokine release can link systemic inflammation to PKC dysregulation and subsequent neurodegeneration. Current Updates in Transdermal Therapeutic Systems and Their Role in Neurological Disorders.

The transdermal therapeutic system plays an important role in the treatment of neuropathic pain. Transdermal drug delivery is considered an ideal therapeutic approach for the management of chronic neurological disorders in the elderly population. It is a simple to use, non-invasive and painless drug delivery system, which provides sustained therapeutic plasma levels of drug for an extended period. Moreover, it bypasses the first-pass metabolism of the active agent, improves bioavailability and reduces undesired adverse effects, which in turn improves patient compliance. Several transdermal del

The characteristics of self-care in children with spinal muscular atrophy: an integrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is one of the most common genetic causes of death in children. Recently, European Commission (EU) has approved a new gene therapy based on onasemnogene abeparvovec (Zolgensma) for the treatment of patients with SMA. It is essential that children suffering from SMA also apply self-care methods to maintain their health, monitor their weight and food intake, and use appropriate remedies. Indeed, self-care is a crucial element in the health care system because it is able to improve survival and prevent hospitalizations. The purpose of this review is to s

Human Umbilical Cord Matrix Stem Cells Reverse Oxidative Stress-Induced Cell Death and Ameliorate Motor Function and Striatal Atrophy in Rat Model of Huntington Disease.

Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited disorder hallmarked by progressive deterioration of specific neurons, followed by movement and cognitive anomalies. Cell therapy approaches in neurodegenerative conditions have concentrated on the replenishment of lost/dying neurons with functional ones. Multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been represented as a potential remedy for HD. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of umbilical cord matrix stem cells (UCMSCs) and their paracrine effect against oxidative stress with a specific focus on HD. To this end, UCMSCs wer

Neuroprotective role of coconut oil for the prevention and treatment of Parkinson's disease: potential mechanisms of action.

Neurodegenerative disease (ND) is a clinical condition in which neurons degenerate with a consequent loss of functions in the affected brain region. Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most progressive ND after Alzheimer's disease (AD), which affects the motor system and is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons from the nigrostriatal pathway in the midbrain, leading to bradykinesia, rigidity, resting tremor, postural instability and non-motor symptoms such as cognitive declines, psychiatric disturbances, autonomic failures, sleep difficulties, and pain syndrome. Coconut oil (CO)

Effectiveness of Manual Therapy and Acupuncture in Tension-Type Headache: A Systematic Review.

Tension-type headache is one of the most prevalent types of headache. The common presentation is a mild-to-moderate dull aching pain around the temporal region, like a tight band around the forehead, neck, shoulder, and sometimes behind eyes. It can occur at any age but most commonly in the adult female population. The exact underlying mechanism is not clear but muscle tension is one of the main causes, which can be due to stress and anxiety. There are several non-pharmacologic treatment options suggested for tension-type headaches, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation, biofeedback

Exposure to environmental neurotoxic substances and neurodevelopment in children from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Environmental (and occupational) exposure to neurotoxic substances is a worldwide problem that can affect children's neurodevelopment (ND). In Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries there are over 300 million children living under the threat of neurodevelopmental delays due to toxic environmental exposure. Large industrial centers, intense mining and agricultural activities, along with changing complex ecosystems constitute a mosaic that drives contamination of air, water and the food chain. Neurotoxic contaminants such as pesticides (organochlorines, organophosphates, carbamates, pyreth
