APIM-guided dyadic nursing after colorectal cancer surgery: a propensity score-matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Recovery after colorectal cancer surgery is influenced not only by patient symptoms but also by caregiver capacity, psychological distress, self-efficacy, and dyadic coping. However, real-world evidence on Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM)-guided dyadic nursing in routine postoperative care remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between documented exposure to APIM-guided dyadic nursing and 6-month postoperative outcomes among colorectal cancer patient-caregiver dyads, and to explore potential actor-partner pathways. METHODS: This propensity score-matched

Reduced-port robot radical colorectal cancer surgery a prospective trial and standardized port strategy.

Reduced-port robotic colorectal surgery minimizes trauma but faces technical challenges. We assessed the domestic BMR-5000 system in a standardized "3 + 1" configuration for radical colorectal cancer surgery. This prospective, single-arm trial used objective performance criteria. The surgical non-conversion rate served as the device efficacy endpoint; the primary safety endpoint was device-related Clavien-Dindo grade III or higher complications within 30 days. The technical feasibility and safety of the 3-port BMR-5000 approach served as the primary observational objective in the clinical implem…

Prehabilitation in patients with low physical fitness undergoing colorectal cancer surgery: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The primary treatment modality for colorectal cancer is surgery. Prehabilitation is advocated to mitigate risk and reduce complications, with benefits likely to be greatest in the least physically fit patients. There is an intersection between physical inactivity, socioeconomic deprivation and multimorbidity that increases surgical risk; however, these patients are under-represented in trials. This review aimed to scope the available evidence for prehabilitation in the least fit patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using Joanna Bri

Evidence-based strategies to improve implementation of tumor isolation techniques in colorectal cancer surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop evidence-based implementation strategies for colorectal cancer (CRC) surgical isolation techniques and evaluate current compliance through a baseline clinical audit, as part of a JBI evidence translation project. METHODS: Following PRISMA and the PIPOST model, 8 studies were included and 10 best evidence items were extracted. RESULTS: A baseline audit at a Shanghai Grade 3A hospital (n = 242 patients, 28 nurses, 13 surgeons) revealed compliance below 60% for 7 of 10 audit indicators (e.g., abdominal cavity flushing: 45.45%; intraoperative glove replacem

Post-operative complications following colorectal cancer surgery in Nigeria and Ghana: A systematic review.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide. There is a rising incidence of colorectal cancer in low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria and Ghana. Surgical treatment for colorectal cancer has demonstrated efficacy, albeit with a higher incidence of postoperative complications in low- and middle-income countries. This review aimed to explore the complications following surgery for colorectal cancer, in Nigeria and Ghana. This review was guided by the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews an

Understanding Textbook outcome failure after robotic colorectal cancer surgery: a multicenter domain-specific analysis.

Textbook Outcome (TO) is increasingly used as a composite measure of surgical quality in colorectal cancer, but its binary structure may obscure why the endpoint is not achieved. We evaluated component-specific and domain-specific patterns of TO failure after robotic colorectal cancer surgery. This multicenter retrospective cohort study analyzed consecutive adult patients undergoing elective colorectal cancer resection at five Polish tertiary referral centers between January 2022 and August 2025. TO required 30-day survival, R0 resection with ≥ 12 lymph nodes retrieved, no surgical reintervent

Impact of statin therapy on postoperative outcomes following colorectal cancer surgery: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The pleiotropic effects of statins, including anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory actions, have prompted investigation into their perioperative role in colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery. However, findings remain inconsistent due to heterogeneity in study designs, statin regimens, and outcome definitions. This reviews current observational evidence, emphasizing the duration of statin therapy and its association with postoperative outcomes. AIM: To evaluate the association between statin therapy and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing CRC surgery. METHODS: A systematic l

International Consensus on Reporting Anastomotic Leaks After Colorectal Cancer Surgery: The CoReAL Reporting Framework.

BACKGROUND: Anastomotic leak frequently complicates colorectal anastomoses with high morbidity and mortality. The substantial variability in published leak rates reflects the lack of consistency in reporting variables that may impact the occurrence, management, and short- and long-term outcomes of patients. OBJECTIVE: The Consensus for Reporting of Colorectal Anastomotic Leaks is an international collaborative that developed a standardized evidence-based framework for reporting key variables related to the entire episode of colorectal anastomotic leak in patients with cancer. Oncological Outcomes From Cytoreductive Surgery and Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Colorectal Cancer Peritoneal Metastases.

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) is effective for colorectal cancer peritoneal metastases (CRPM) at increasing overall survival (OS) compared to systemic anticancer treatment (SACT) alone. The addition of Oxaliplatin heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has been shown in a randomized controlled trial to result in increased complications without significant OS benefit. This study evaluates outcomes for CRPM patients undergoing CRS+HIPEC with Oxaliplatin (Ox) 368mg/m2 (30 min), versus Mitomycin C (MMC) 35mg/m2 (90min).  METHODS: A prospective CRPM real-world database was used to collect outcom

Outcomes reported in elective colorectal cancer surgery research for older patients: A scoping review.

AIM: Colorectal cancer rates are increasing in older populations, who often have comorbidities and face higher surgical risks and mortality rates. Therefore, surgical outcomes, such as 5-year mortality rates, may not be appropriate, necessitating a focus on postoperative quality of life. However, determining optimal postoperative outcome measures for older colorectal cancer patients poses a challenge. This scoping review aimed to explore currently available data describing postoperative outcomes used to assess older patients undergoing elective colorectal cancer surgery. METHOD: We conducted

Antibiotic use during radical surgery in stage I-III colorectal cancer: correlation with outcomes?

AIMS: Accumulating evidence indicates that the use of antibiotics (ATBs) in cancer patients is potentially correlated with patient prognosis. Interestingly, the use of these agents is not uncommon in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients during surgery; however, their prognostic value in the clinic has never been addressed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on ATB use during surgery, including the cumulative defined daily dose (cDDD) and the number of categories, were collected. Differences in the clinical data between the low and high cDDD subgroups and between subgroups with ≤ 4 and >4 categories. Add
