BACKGROUND: This paper documents the JC A-Connect: Jockey Club Autism Support Network community education program, which was a decade-long, territory-wide, and cross-sectoral initiative in Hong Kong, China. It was created in response to the rise of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in mainstream schools which posed challenges to support their adaptation. The program came timely as the number of autistic students doubled during the project implementation period.
PROGRAM: Unlike other initiatives that directly served the autistic individuals, this program delivered at the wider socia

The Global Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) advocates for the treatment of entire endemic communities, in order to achieve its elimination targets. LF is predominantly a rural disease, and achieving the required treatment coverage in these areas is much easier compared to urban areas that are more complex. In Ghana, parts of the Greater Accra Region with Accra as the capital city are also endemic for LF. Mass Drug Administration (MDA) in Accra started in 2006. However, after four years of treatment, the coverage has always been far below the 65% epidemiologic coverage for inte

BACKGROUND: Short inter-pregnancy interval (IPI) is associated with adverse health outcomes for women and infants, and low-income women experience disproportionate rates of short IPI. An essential solution is providing postpartum (PP) women with timely contraceptive care. However, patient-centered approaches for facilitating care access are needed.
OBJECTIVE: To explore Community Health Center (CHC) staff and provider perspectives on the implementation of a clinical trial offering co-scheduled well-infant/maternal contraceptive care for women with infants 0 to 6 months at the Well-Baby Visit

Community acceptance and participation are essential for the success of mass ivermectin chemotherapy programmes for onchocerciasis (river blindness). To explore the local understanding of the purpose of ivermectin and willingness to continue taking the drug, we performed questionnaire surveys in four communities with hyperendemic onchocerciasis after each of three ivermectin treatment rounds. More than 100 respondents participated in each KAP survey, representing the heads of 30% of the households in each community. The respondents rarely stated that the goal of the ivermectin treatment progra

Climate hazards are causing increasingly frequent and severe disasters. The populations most impacted by the health and social costs of disasters include language minorities, displaced individuals, and low-income communities. This commentary explores three key issues. First, climate hazards lead to displacement and increase vulnerability by disrupting housing, livelihoods, and access to care. Second, current emergency and disaster frameworks often overlook equity in communication, access to care, and recovery. Third, practical solutions can prioritize equity across mitigation, preparedness, re

BACKGROUND: Community health nurses (CHNs) played a key role in pandemic crisis management, yet their specific experiences remain poorly documented. This study aims to identify the experiences of CHNs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHOD: A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Relevant articles were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus in 2024. Two independent researchers reviewed titles and abstracts to identify eligible studies based on the inclusion criteria. BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium ulcerans infection, commonly known as Buruli ulcer (BU), is a debilitating neglected tropical disease. Its management remains complex and has three main components: antibiotic treatment combining rifampicin and streptomycin for 56 days, wound dressings and skin grafts for large ulcerations, and physical therapy to prevent functional limitations after care. In Benin, BU patient care is being integrated into the government health system. In this paper, we report on an innovative pilot program designed to introduce BU decentralization in Ouinhi district, one of Benin's m

Advances in the rescue chain and first aid of polytrauma patients, which have consequently increased their chance of survival, have led to an increase in demands for rehabilitation. However, there is still a large hole in the continuity of rehabilitation between acute patient care and in-patient rehabilitation, the so-called "rehab-hole". The consequences are untapped rehabilitation potential, loss of strength, endurance and motivation as well as impairment of function of the patient.Based on the phase model of neurological/neurosurgical rehabilitation, we propose a step model for the rehabili

PURPOSE: To complete the baseline trachoma map worldwide by conducting population-based surveys in an estimated 1238 suspected endemic districts of 34 countries.
METHODS: A series of national and sub-national projects owned, managed and staffed by ministries of health, conduct house-to-house cluster random sample surveys in evaluation units, which generally correspond to "health district" size: populations of 100,000-250,000 people. In each evaluation unit, we invite all residents aged 1 year and older from h households in each of c clusters to be examined for clinical signs of trachoma, wher

OBJECTIVES: People deprived of housing have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the public health mitigation measures implemented in response. Emerging evidence has shown the adverse health outcomes experienced by these communities due to SARS-CoV-2 infection; however, the voices of community members themselves have not been widely amplified in the published literature.
METHODS: We conducted an interpretive qualitative study. People deprived of housing were involved in study development, recruitment, and data analysis. People deprived of housing or precariously house

AIMS: In low-income countries, care for people with severe mental disorders (SMDs) who manage to access treatment is usually emergency-based, intermittent or narrowly biomedical. The aim of this study was to inform development of a scalable district-level mental health care plan to meet the long-term care needs of people with SMD in rural Ethiopia.
METHODS: The present study was carried out as formative work for the Programme for Improving Mental health CarE which seeks to develop, implement and evaluate a district level model of integrating mental health care into primary care. Six focus gro

BACKGROUND: Pakistan faces high maternal and child mortality rates, with semi-urban and rural areas particularly affected. Community-based initiatives that emphasize local participation can address these challenges by fostering community ownership and sustainability. This study evaluated a community-based education (CBE) module, developed through a university-community partnership, in improving maternal and child health indicators in a semi-urban locality.
METHODS: The study was conducted in four phases in Lahore, Pakistan: Phase one included a pre-assessment survey to identify health needs a

The concepts and goals of a program in adolescent medicine should include development of a capability to focus on current health needs of youth in a variety of settings; to plan clinical services to meet those needs with the flexibility necessary to respond to changing future requirements; and to deliver service within such a context while simulataneously creating a milieu conducive to education and investigation into the very process and definition of adolescence. The Division of Adolescent Medicine at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center was designed 7 years ago to fulfill these goals and

Alternate care sites (ACS) are locations that can be converted to provide either in-patient and/or out-patient health care services when existing facilities are compromised by a hazard impact or the volume of patients exceeds available capacity and/or capabilities. In March through May of 2020, Michigan Medicine (MM), the affiliated health system of the University of Michigan, planned a 500 bed ACS at an off-site location. Termed the Michigan Medicine Field Hospital (MMFH), this ACS was intended to be a step-down care facility for low-acuity COVID-19 positive MM patients who could be transitio

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by anomalous pulmonary venous drainage to the inferior vena cava, causing a left-to-right shunt. Six patients with scimitar syndrome were diagnosed in our hospital between 2002 and 2008. There were 4 girls and 2 boys; 4 < 5 kg in weight, 2 < 8 kg in weight. Scimitar syndrome was suspected in 5 cases because of dextroversion, and diagnosed by color Doppler echocardiography in all 6 when a scimitar vein was detected entering the inferior vena cava. Computed tomography confirmed the diagnosis in all patients. Two patients had horseshoe

OBJECTIVE: Adults with rare vascular anomalies (VAs) face many care and communication challenges since multidisciplinary VA care is primarily available in pediatric hospitals. Previous research has found that patients with VAs have uncertainty about sexual and reproductive health, but their reproductive care and communication experiences have not been well documented. The goal of this study was to explore the fertility and family planning experiences of women with VAs.
METHODS: Guided by uncertainty management theory, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 12 women with complex VAs. We

BACKGROUND: Virtual consultations (VCs) using video or telephone were embraced at speed in general practice (GP) and community care during the COVID-19 pandemic. People with intellectual disabilities, their families, and support workers (SWs), along with health care professionals (HCPs), had to adapt quickly to this change in provision, but little is known about how this new way of working was experienced.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the views and experiences of people with intellectual disabilities, their families, SWs, GP, and community care professionals on the quality and safety
