Maternal and child health services in India with special focus on perinatal services.

India has an excellent infrastructural layout for the delivery of MCH services in the community through a network of subcenters, primary health centers, community health centers, district hospitals, state medical college hospitals, and other hospitals in the public and private sectors. However, the health pyramid does not function effectively because of limited resources, communication delays, a lack of commitment on the part of health professionals, and, above all, a lack of managerial skills, supervision, and political will. The allocation of financial resources for the delivery of health ca

Promoting or pressurising participation? A discourse analysis of online patient information resources about prehabilitation before cancer treatment.

Prehabilitation aims to improve outcomes by optimising health before treatment. Interventions typically target diet, physical activity and/or mental health. Communicating the benefits of prehabilitation may influence patients' engagement in interventions. However, the evidence for prehabilitation prior to cancer treatment is replete with uncertainties. Synthesising and communicating the efficacy of prehabilitation is challenging. This study aims to understand how evidence, motivation and accessibility are balanced in online patient-facing resources about prehabilitation. Databases, search engi

Use of a Patient Navigator to Increase Utilization of a Women's Lifestyle Medicine Training Clinic.

In the United States, women face greater risks of death in pregnancy and childbirth than women in other wealthy countries. This is influenced by preventable conditions like hypertension, substance use disorders, and diabetes mellitus. The risk is greater for women from diverse, low-income communities. Lifestyle medicine (LM) can help prevent and reverse the effects of chronic diseases. LM Physicians can reduce the occurrence of preventable diseases by counseling patients to make choices to improve their health outcomes. Access to LM is often a challenge for low-resource populations. This artic

Graduates and splitees from therapeutic community drug treatment programs: a comparison.

As greater numbers of drug abusers seek treatment and drug rehabilitation program resources become more and more scarce, selection processes should become based on scientific research rather than on the intuition of a few influential personnel. Many therapeutic community drug treatment programs have a preferential policy for accepting voluntary over court-ordered commitments. Our findings indicate that such a policy discriminates against those individuals who are most likely to succeed in completing their treatment. Our data also indicate that the success of male drug addicts in completing the

The Willow Hill Community Health Assessment: Assessing the Needs of Children in a Former Slave Community.

The overall purpose of this community needs assessment was to explore the perceptions of health and educational needs among youth residing in a rural Georgia community, document existing assets that could be utilized to meet those needs, and to identify socioeconomic barriers and facilitators in health education. A sequential mixed method design was used. Intercept surveys were conducted followed by individual, key informant interviews and a focus group. Survey data was entered into an Excel spreadsheet and SPSS for analysis and descriptive statistics including means and frequencies were calcu

Exploring community knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of Alzheimer's Disease/Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias and healthy ageing in Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders.

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) disparities exist in the rapidly growing and extremely heterogeneous Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NH/PI) ageing populations in the United States. Limited community-clinical resources supporting culturally competent and timely diagnosis exacerbate barriers to existing care services in these populations. Community-based participatory research or community-engaged research are proven community-academic research approaches that can support the development and implementation of community-focused programmes to maximise c

Community Health Workers as Support for Sickle Cell Care.

Community health workers are increasingly recognized as useful for improving health care and health outcomes for a variety of chronic conditions. Community health workers can provide social support, navigation of health systems and resources, and lay counseling. Social and cultural alignment of community health workers with the population they serve is an important aspect of community health worker intervention. Although community health worker interventions have been shown to improve patient-centered outcomes in underserved communities, these interventions have not been evaluated with sickle

The age of rivalry: Eye lens stable isotopes reveal dynamic resource overlap throughout ontogeny in native and invasive fishes.

Competition for shared limiting resources within and between species is a powerful force in biological communities. Modern coexistence theory predicts that higher intra-specific, relative to inter-specific, competition results in species coexistence. However, resource use is rarely constant across animal development, whereby many species experience ontogenetic dietary shifts, suggesting that the relative strengths of competition may change throughout ontogeny. To quantify potential competition between invasive and native stream fishes throughout ontogeny, we measured isotopic niche overlap of

Challenges of methadone maintenance treatment decentralisation from Vietnamese primary care providers' perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Decentralising methadone maintenance treatment to primary care improves patients' access to care and their drug and HIV treatment outcomes. However, primary care providers (PCP), especially those working in limited-resource settings, are facing great challenges to provide quality methadone treatment. This study explores the challenges perceived by PCP providing methadone treatment at commune health centres in a mountainous region in Vietnam. METHOD: We conducted in-depth interviews with 26 PCP who worked as program managers, physicians, counsellors, pharmacists and medication di

Community level factors and child maltreatment rates.

Using census and administrative agency data for 177 urban census tracts, variation in rates of officially reported child maltreatment is found to be related to structural determinants of community social organization: economic and family resources, residential instability, household and age structure, and geographic proximity of neighborhoods to concentrated poverty. Furthermore, child maltreatment rates are found to be intercorrelated with other indicators of the breakdown of community social control and organization. These other indicators are similarly affected by the structural dimensions

BACKGROUND: Pediatric asthma remains a leading global health concern and disproportionately affects children in low-income and environmentally burdened communities. Chemical and non-chemical stressors, including air pollution, allergens, climate-related events, and psychosocial stress, contribute to asthma exacerbations and hinder effective disease management. OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the intersection of childhood asthma and community resilience, emphasizing the influence of environmental exposures, public health infrastructure, and targeted interventions on pediatric respiratory outco

Older People Living Alone: A Predictive Model of Fall Risk.

Falls in older people are a result of a combination of multiple risk factors. There are few studies involving predictive models in a community context. The aim of this study was to determine the validation of a new model for predicting fall risk in older adults (65+) living alone in community dwellings (n = 186; n = 117) with a test-retest reliability study. We consider in the predictive model the significant factors emerged from the bivariate analysis: age, zone, social community resources, physical exercise, self-perception of health, difficulty to keep standing, difficulty to sit and get up…

Considerations for cardiac catheterization laboratory procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic perspectives from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Emerging Leader Mentorship (SCAI ELM) Members and Graduates.

The novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is highly infectious, carries significant morbidity and mortality, and has rapidly resulted in strained health care system and hospital resources. In addition to patient-related care concerns in infected individuals, focus must also relate to diminishing community spread, protection of staff, case selection, and concentration of resources. The current document based on available data and consensus opinion addresses appropriate catheterization laboratory preparedness for treating these patients, including proce

Rethinking the discharge policy for Ebola convalescents in an accelerating epidemic.

The outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa has outstripped available resources. Novel strategies are desperately needed to streamline operations. The present norm of requiring negative results on polymerase chain reaction for EVD convalescent patients to be discharged is not evidence-based and often results in asymptomatic patients competing for beds in dangerously crowded Ebola Treatment Units, posing risks to ward staff and patients and the community if infected persons are turned away. We summarize the relevant data and call for a change in discharge criteria for convalescent

Streamlining research by using existing tools.

Over the past two decades, the health research enterprise has matured rapidly, and many recognize an urgent need to translate pertinent research results into practice, to help improve the quality, accessibility, and affordability of US healthcare. Streamlining research operations would speed translation, particularly for multisite collaborations. However, the culture of research discourages reusing or adapting existing resources or study materials. Too often, researchers start studies and multisite collaborations from scratch-reinventing the wheel. Our team developed a compendium of resources
