The standard serologic tests for diagnosis of histoplasmosis include the complement fixation test (CF), which is quite sensitive, and the immunodiffusion test (ID), which is fairly specific. The serological prevalence of bovine babesiosis in Guyana was determined utilising the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) and the complement fixation (CF) tests. Sera from horses and human beings with clinically diagnosed western equine encephalitis (WEE) virus infections were tested for hemagglutination-inhibition (HI), complement-fixation (CF), and neutralizing (N) antibody to WEE virus. We have investigated the presence of the so-called "herpes gestationis factor" in the serum of fifteen patients with bullous pemphigoid and one patient with cicatricial pemphigoid, that were negative for circulating anti-basement membrane antibodies, using the complement fixation test (substrate: human normal skin, 0 group). We have found herpes gestationis factor in 30% of the serologically negative patients. The presence in the serum of an auto-antibody IgG1 (HGF) highly avid for complement, may determine the false serological negativity in this patient.

Sera and synovial fluids from patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis inhibit the ability of normal serum to prevent immune precipitation. Sera from patients with seronegative forms of arthritis contain little inhibitory activity. In 160 patients with disorders of brain circulation in cerebral atherosclerosis, 68 normals and 38 patients with different neurological diseases (a control group), a special study was undertaken to study the antibrain antibodies with the aid of a complement fixation test (CFT), and a test of complement utilization (CUT). Positive results in the CFT and CUT were seen in patients with ischemic strokes and transient disorders of brain circulation. The formation of antibodies to brain tissues depends upon their type, duration of the disease and is more characteristic of the rehabilitation period.

A radioimmunoassay (RIA) was developed to measure antibody in coccidioidomycosis with improved quantitation. Sera from 41 patients with active coccidioidomycosis had a mean +/- SD value of 0.6 +/- 0.49 mg/ml. Twelve healthy controls and 23 patients with noncoccidioidal diseases had a mean level of 0.06 +/- 0.12.
