Recovery of phosphorous from swine wastewater through crystallization.

All the phosphate rock Japan needs must be presently imported from abroad because the country has no subterranean phosphorous resources. Therefore, there is a need to accelerate the development of and establish the technologies for phosphorous recovery from waste and wastewater. Swine wastewater has a high potential for phosphorous recovery in Japan. A reactor for removing and recovering phosphorous from swine wastewater was designed with dual functions, crystallization through aeration and separation of formed struvite by settling. However, a dehydration, composting and characterization proce…

Plant ash modulates enzymatic hydrolysis of food waste for bioactive polysaccharide recovery.

Existing food waste (FW) treatments, e.g., composting and anaerobic digestion, could enable nutrient and energy recovery, whereas the selective recovery of high-value bioactive polysaccharides (BPS) from FW has received limited attention. The alkaline nature of plant ash (PA) may regulate FW hydrolysis process and favor BPS accumulation, but this potential remains unexplored. In this study, a PA-modulated enzymatic hydrolysis strategy was developed to enable targeted BPS recovery. PA-modulated enzymatic hydrolysis increased the BPS yield from 2.29 ± 0.07% to 7.73 ± 0.14% (w/w), representing a …

Valorization of Sour Milk to Form Bioplastics: Friend or Foe?

A demonstration was developed to introduce students to waste valorization in order to form bioplastics. Waste valorization is the process of reusing, recycling, or composting, from waste, useful products or sources of energy. In this demonstration, waste valorization is introduced by converting sour milk into a bioplastic via the addition of lemon juice upon heating. Utilizing lemon juice to perform the acidification offers a greener procedure than the traditional formaldehyde (used commercially to make galalith) and enhances the transferability in remote locations such as the Amazon Rainfores…

Characterization and sequence analysis of potential biofertilizer and biocontrol agent Bacillus subtilis strain SEM-9 from silkworm excrement.

Fusarium wilt is a devastating soil-borne disease caused mainly by highly host-specific formae speciales of Fusarium oxysporum. Antagonistic microorganisms play a very important role in Fusarium wilt control, and the isolation of potential biocontrol strains is becoming more and more important. We isolated a bacterial strain (SEM-9) from the high-temperature stage of silkworm excrement composting, which had a marked ability to solubilize phosphorus, promote the growth and increase the yield of the small Chinese cabbage, and which also exhibited considerable antagonistic effect towards Fusarium…

Immobilization of tetracyclines in manure and manure-amended soils using aluminum-based drinking water treatment residuals.

Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) are emerging contaminants of concern in the environment, mainly due to the potential for development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and effect on microbiota that could interfere with crucial ecosystem functions such as nutrient cycling and decomposition. High levels of VAs such as tetracyclines (TCs) have been reported in agricultural soils amended with manure, which also has the potential to cause surface and groundwater contamination. Several recent studies have focused on developing methods to immobilize VAs such as composting with straw, hardwood chips, comme…

Investigation of the effectiveness of source control sanitation concepts including pre-treatment with Rottebehaelter.

High levels of nutrients recovery can be achieved with source control sanitation--technologies are already available. Separation toilets for example separate urine that can be used in agriculture with some crop restrictions as a fertiliser after about 6 months of storage. The grey water has very low loads of nitrogen and can be treated in different combinations of biological and physical treatment and reused. Faecal matter with flush water from the separation toilet can be discharged into Rottebehaelter (an underground pre-composting tank) that retains solid material and drains liquid to a cer…

Biodegradation of bio-sourced and synthetic organic electronic materials towards green organic electronics.

Ubiquitous use of electronic devices has led to an unprecedented increase in related waste as well as the worldwide depletion of reserves of key chemical elements required in their manufacturing. The use of biodegradable and abundant organic (carbon-based) electronic materials can contribute to alleviate the environmental impact of the electronic industry. The pigment eumelanin is a bio-sourced candidate for environmentally benign (green) organic electronics. The biodegradation of eumelanin extracted from cuttlefish ink is studied both at 25 °C (mesophilic conditions) and 58 °C (thermophilic c

Thermophilic molds: Biology and applications.

Thermophilic molds thrive in a variety of natural habitats including soils, composts, wood chip piles, nesting materials of birds and other animals, municipal refuse and others, and ubiquitous in their distribution. These molds grow in simple media containing carbon and nitrogen sources and mineral salts. Polyamines are synthesized in these molds and the composition of lipids varies considerably, predominantly containing palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids with low levels of lauric, palmiotoleic and stearic acids. Thermophilic molds are capable of efficiently degrading organic materials by secr

Trichloroethylene removal from groundwater in flow-through columns simulating a permeable reactive barrier constructed with plant mulch.

Groundwater contaminated with TCE is commonly treated with a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) constructed with zero-valence iron. The cost of iron has driven a search for less costly alternatives, and composted plant mulch has been used as an alternative at several sites. A column study was conducted that simulated conditions in a PRB at Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma. The reactive matrix was 50% (v/v) shredded tree mulch, 10% cotton gin trash, and 40% sand. The mean residence time of groundwater in the columns was 17 days. The estimated retardation factor for TCE was 12. TCE was supplied at c

Impacts of Nutrients on Alkene Biodegradation Rates and Microbial Community Composition in Enriched Consortia from Natural Inocula.

There is a growing need for biological and chemical methods for upcycling plastic waste streams. Pyrolysis processes can accelerate plastic depolymerization by breaking polyethylene into smaller alkene components which may be more biodegradable than the initial polymer. While the biodegradation of alkanes has been extensively studied, the role microorganisms play in alkene breakdown is not well understood. Alkene biodegradation holds the potential to contribute to the coupling of chemical and biological processing of polyethylene plastics. In addition, nutrient levels are known to impact rates

Carbon cycle of polyhydroxyalkanoates (CCP): Biosynthesis and biodegradation.

Carbon neutrality of bioactive materials is vital in promoting sustainable development for human society. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) is a class of typical carbon-cycle bio-polyesters synthesized by microorganisms using sugars, organic acids, and even carbon dioxide. PHAs first degrade into 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) before further breaking down into carbon dioxide and water, aligning with carbon-neutral goals. Due to their diverse molecular structures and material properties, excellent biocompatibility, and controlled biodegradability, PHAs have found widespread applications in environmental pr

Valorizing Organic Waste: Selenium Sulfide Production Mediated by Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria.

Selenium sulfide, the active ingredient of traditional antidandruff shampoos, is industrially produced from selenium dioxide (SeO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) under acidic conditions. This reaction can also be carried out with natural H2S and H2S generated by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). These bacteria are robust and, by relying on their conventional growth medium, also thrive in "waste" materials, such as a mixture of cabbage juice and compost on the one side, and a mixture of spoiled milk and mineral water on the other. In these mixtures, SRB are able to utilize the DL-lactate and sulfat
