Prevalence and clinical correlations of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive compulsive symptoms are often present in persons with schizophrenia. Adequately powered studies to evaluate the effect of such symptoms in the course of the disorder, are few. AIM: We aimed to estimate the prevalence and type of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in persons with schizophrenia. METHODS: We evaluated 200 outpatients with schizophrenia (DSM-V) on the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) and the Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (YBOCS). Participants with or without obsessive compulsive symptoms were matched on age, gender and age of onset of schizo

Levels of aggressiveness are higher among alcohol-related suicides: results from a psychological autopsy study.

Suicide is one of the major causes of deaths worldwide. Several studies have showed that alcohol use disorders (AUD) are associated with sui … lity Disorder (OR=4.68), and were less likely to meet criteria for Avoidant (OR=0.26) and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorders (OR=0.35). Impulsivity scores were higher in AUD suicides (p=0.18), as well as aggression scores (p<0.001). Results form the conditional logistic regression models showed that cocaine abuse/dependence (OR=4.20) and Antisocial Personality Disorder ( …

Anorexia nervosa. An affective disorder?

Follow-up data on 26 patients hospitalized during adolescence for anorexia nervosa are presented. The mean length of follow-up was 4.9 years. There were no mortalities. Only one patient at the time of follow-up was still possibly anorexic. However, a substantial number of the patients did have other eating difficulties. Most striking was the clinical psychopathology present at follow-up, particularly the incidence of affective disorder. A large number of patients manifested depressive symptomatology in both the premorbid and the postmorbid states, as well as at the time of follow-up. A family

[Amnesic presentations of the compulsive obsessional confusions (about 3 patients appearing in a consultation of memory)].

Disorders or complaints of memory are a frequent cause of consultation in depression, major anxiety and psychiatry disease with personality disorders. We report 3 patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), without diagnosis and treatment, examined in a specialized memory consultation. They always had OCD with cognitive checking. Diagnosis of transient global amnesia and temporal complex seizure were discussed in 2 cases. Psychometric impairment only was observed in first free recall of a verbal memory task and was no specific. Behavioural during testing seemed to be very important to a

Perfectionism or Perfectionisms in Orthorexia Nervosa.

Purpose: Perfectionism is considered a transdiagnostic construct that characterises eating disorders (EDs) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and that could also depict orthorexia nervosa (ON). The principal aim of this study was to investigate what dimensions of perfectionism mostly represent ON. Moreover, it was evaluated if dieting impacted the presence of orthorexic features and perfectionistic behaviour. Methods: The sample consisted of two groups-the "Diet" (n = 93), and the "No Diet" (n = 94) groups-composed of people with high and low orthorexic tendencies, respectively. Participa

Examining Current Conceptualizations of Psychopathology With the MMPI-2/MMPI-2-RF Restructured Clinical Scales: Preliminary Findings From a Cross-Cultural Study.

Watson ( 2005 ) proposed a hierarchical reorganization of the underlying structure of emotional disorders. This study cross-culturally evaluated Watson's (2005) structure of mood and anxiety disorders, using mainly dichotomous criteria, and explored the placement of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in this model. It also tested Sellbom, Ben-Porath, and Bagby's (2008) proposed elaboration of the 2-factor model (positive and negative activation) that incorporates a higher order dimension of demoralization. One hundred men and 133 women from psychiatric settings in Israel completed the Minneso

A catathymic infanticide.

A case of infanticide committed by a 37-year-old married man, the father of three sons, is reported. Clinically depressed since adolescence, and also diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and a dependent personality, the subject began to worry about killing someone a decade before the homicide. Increasingly disabled by his major depression, unable to work, and confined in his home, the idea that his only recourse was to kill one of his sons became fixed and frequent. Following his fourth psychiatric hospitalization, he took his 13-month-old son home from day care and drowned him in the

[Bulimia nervosa and obesity. Clinical and psycho-social features, and intervention].

In this article, the authors deal with clinical and psycho-social aspects as well as treatment measures for nervous bulimia, overeating attacks and obesity. By studying these disorders, we have been able to notice the existence of common psycho-pathological characteristics. Impulsive behavior, more or less compulsive eating habits, and the presence of certain personality traits are different from nervous anorexia according to our study. However, our manner of viewing these disorders consists of considering nervous bulimia and overeating attacks as being clear psychiatric entities, while obesit

[Eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating].

We present an overview of three different eating disorders which seem to have an increasing prevalence, especially among young women between 12 and 20 years of age. Anorexia and bulimia nervosa are "threshold disorders" which usually become manifest for the first time during the transition from childhood to early adult life. Eating disorders are chronic disorders and often take a course of 6 or more years. Remission, improvements and symptom change can be expected even after many years of the disorder. Psychiatric comorbidity which occurs in more than 50% of eating disordered patients is of pr

Personality style differences in visual search performance.

The present study continues the examination of the personality styles in normal populations that have been described in the clinical literature. Earlier work has focused on behavioral, attitudinal, and cognitive components of the personality styles. The present study extends our exploration of the cognitive domain by examining the performance of different personality groups on a visual scanning task. Hysterics searched a stimulus array for letter targets at a mean rate of 0.04 +/- SD 0.177 seconds per unit of information, which was slower than the control rate of 0.0225 +/- SD 0.0078 seconds.

Schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology in obsessive-compulsive disorder: an empirical study.

The differential diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders can be difficult. In the current diagnostic criteria, basic concepts such as obsession and delusion overlap. This study examined lifetime schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology, including subtle schizotypal symptomatology and subjective anomalies such as self-disorders, in a sample diagnosed with OCD in a specialized setting. The study also examined the differential diagnostic potential of the classic psychopathological notions of true obsession ('with resistance') and pseudo-obsession. The s

The mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with and without depressive, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorders: a longitudinal study of three Dutch case-control cohorts.

BACKGROUND: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health in people with pre-existing mental health disorders is unclear. In three psychiatry case-control cohorts, we compared the perceived mental health impact and coping and changes in depressive symptoms, anxiety, worry, and loneliness before and during the COVID-19 pandemic between people with and without lifetime depressive, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorders. METHODS: Between April 1 and May 13, 2020, online questionnaires were distributed among the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety, Netherlands Study of Depressi

Mapping the future of interventional psychiatry for the obsessive-compulsive related disorders: A scoping review.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), hoarding disorder (HD), skin-picking disorder (SPD), and hair-pulling disorder (HPD) are characterized by compulsive behaviours leading to distress and impairment. Current treatments attain only partial or non-response. Interventional psychiatric approaches may target specific regions of the brain for treatment. This scoping review maps the current literature and synthesizes key findings. Databases were searched up to June 27, 2022 for studies examining interventional psychiatric treatments for BDD, HD, SPD, and HPD, producing 910 results. Twenty were included;

Albuminuria and Mental Illness Risk: Results From National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2018 and Mendelian Randomization Analyses.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests a link between albuminuria and mental illness. However, whether this association is stable, and its specific mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: The cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. Weighted multivariable-adjusted logistic regression, subgroup analysis, interaction tests, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were conducted to assess the correlation between albuminuria and the risk of mental illness (depression). Subsequently, two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses were perfo

Impostors and Impersonators: Fake Health Practitioners and the Law.

The phenomenon of unqualified persons dishonestly holding themselves out as registered health practitioners has a lengthy and colourful history. Many notorious examples of such conduct have been exposed only after significant periods of successful deception by the perpetrators. However, there is a very limited scholarly literature on the phenomenon. A number of explanations have been proffered for such examples of deceptive conduct, including the commercial, the pathological and even the socially and sexually opportunist. Pseudologia fantastica is a term coined by Delbrück in 1891 for compulsi
