One hundred fifty-six consecutive cases of carcinoma of the anal canal and margin diagnosed between 1959 and 1986 were reviewed. There were 27 cases between 1959 and 1967, 41 between 1968 and 1976, and 88 between 1977 and 1986. The clinicopathologic features are described of two patients whose cervical cytology smears showed features which were thought initially to indicate dysplasia, but which were later considered to be those of condylomata acuminata. One patient was an immunosuppressed renal transplant recipient, the other was a routine gynecologic clinic patient. Genital warts are manifestations of a common viral sexually transmitted disease (STD) that are often diagnosed and treated with a variety of clinical specialties. Unlike for other STDs, there is a general lack of a well-established treatment algorithm for the management of external genital warts. This, coupled with a wide variety of treatments and clinical settings, makes the development of a simple algorithm virtually impossible. In this review what is known and not known about current treatments and case management will be discussed.
