Patient related outcomes in a real life prospective follow up study: Allergen immunotherapy increase quality of life and reduce sick days.

BACKGROUND: One fourth of the adult population in Europe suffer from respiratory allergy. Subcutaneous-allergen-specific-immunotherapy (SCIT) has long-term disease modifying effect on disease specific Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of SCIT on alternative disease outcomes in patients with grass-pollen and/or house dust mite induced allergic rhino-conjunctivitis and/or an asthma diagnosis. Focus was on expressing outcomes in terms of generic quality of life (Quality-Adjusted-Life-Years (QALY)) and reductions in sick days. METHODS: The

[Prevalence of allergy in patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID)].

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in medical care have drastically improved life prognosis of severe life-threatening diseases in newborns and young children. However, 'intact' survival without sequelae for all the children is still to be achieved and prevalence of severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) secondary to central nervous system damages of any cause in childhood, especially in neonatal period, is increasing. Patients with SMID have complex problems involving multiple organs and multidisciplinary approach is mandatory. However, prevalence of allergic diseases in SMID patients is

Allergic manifestations of contact lens wearing.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Contact lens-induced papillary conjunctivitis (CLPC) is a common ocular allergic disease in contact lens wearers. In its more severe form, it can cause giant papillary conjunctivitis, resulting in contact lens intolerance and the need to discontinue the use of contact lenses. This review presents the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and management guidelines of this common disorder. RECENT FINDINGS: Different types of contact lenses are associated with differences in the severity of CLPC. Refitting patients with silicone hydrogel contact lenses or with daily disposable

Risk of Atopic Diseases among Siblings of Patients with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests a positive association between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and atopic diseases. However, the risk of atopic diseases in unaffected siblings of patients with ADHD has not been investigated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk of developing atopic diseases among unaffected siblings of ADHD probands. METHODS: Using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 20,170 unaffected siblings of patients with ADHD born between 1980 and 2000 and 80,680 age-, birth time-, and residence-matchedcontrols were included in this

Antigen sensitivity evaluated by tear-specific and serum-specific IgE, skin tests, and conjunctival and nasal provocation tests in patients with ocular allergic disease.

The potential for ocular allergic patients to have a site-specific antigen sensitisation was investigated using various diagnostic tests of allergen sensitivity in subjects with allergic conjunctivitis (AC: n = 135), vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VK: n = 20), rhinoconjunctivitis (n = 20) or rhinitis (N = 10). In the AC and VK patients, skin tests and conjunctival provocation tests (CPT) were performed, and the levels of specific IgE in serum and in tears were identified. A subgroup of 36 patients was also challenged with a nasal-specific provocation test (NPT). Results showed a poor correlation

The 2002-2007 trends of prevalence of asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema in Irish schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: Irish adolescents have the third highest asthma prevalence in the world. Few data examine trends of prevalence of asthma and allergic disorders in younger Irish children. We compared the prevalence of asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema in school children, aged 6-9 in 2002 and 2007. METHODS: In two cross-sectional studies, parents of children aged 6-9, completed identical ISAAC-based questionnaires in the same 24 Cork City schools in 2002 (n = 1474, response rate = 74.8%) and in 2007 (n = 1535, response rate = 76.2%). RESULTS: The prevalence of asthma in our study population of

[Evaluation of the efficacy of subjective symptoms, objective findings, and of a total tear IgE detection kit in diagnosis of allergic conjunctival diseases].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of subjective symptoms, objective findings, and of a total tear IgE test kit in the diagnosis of allergic conjunctival diseases (ACD). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The subjects were 223 patients with ACD, diagnosed according to the clinical practice guidelines for allergic conjunctival diseases in 28 medical facilities in Japan. The ACD patients were divided into the following five groups: 84 patients with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC), 52 patients with perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC), 41 patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC), 38 patients

Demographic aspects of allergic ocular diseases and evaluation of new criteria for clinical assessment of ocular allergy.

BACKGROUND: The clinical features of allergic ocular diseases (AOD) are characterized by their wide variety. Clinical evaluation criteria are essential not only for objective assessment in clinical trials, but also for clinical studies on etiological aspects of AOD. However, there have been no internationally established criteria for clinical evaluation and classification of the severity of AOD. We established new criteria and applied them to many cases of AOD, and evaluated their usefulness for clinical purposes. We also studied whether each clinical entity of AOD [allergic conjunctivitis (AC

[Eye complications in atopic dermatitis].

Eye complications were studied in 240 cases of atopic dermatitis (age distribution 9 months to 40 years) hospitalized in the dermatology ward of our hospital. One hundred and thirty-four patients (55.8%) had at least one eye complication. Allergic conjunctivitis, cataracts, vernal conjunctivitis, retinal detachment, keratoconus, and retinal tears were detected in 28.3%, 17.9%, 2.1%, 1.3%, 1.3%, and 0.8%, respectively. Serum IgE levels and eye complications did not correlate. Routine ophthalmological examinations are recommended for patients with atopic dermatitis.

Ocular allergy and mast cell stabilizers.

The role of the mast cell in ocular allergy is becoming understood. As a result, the therapeutic effects of agents that stabilize the mast cell have been evaluated in the treatment of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and giant papillary conjunctivitis. At present, cromolyn sodium is the only available mast cell stabilizer of known effectiveness. Clinical and laboratory investigations of the effectiveness of cromolyn sodium in the treatment of ocular allergy are reviewed in the present article.

[Chinese expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric vernal keratoconjunctivitis (2026)].

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic, seasonal, recurrent, bilateral allergic inflammatory disease that predominantly affects children, severely impacting patients' quality of life. The early diagnosis rate of VKC in Chinese children is relatively low, treatment regimens vary, and clinical efficacy is difficult to guarantee. To guide the related clinical practice, the Cornea Group of Ophthalmology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, together with the Chinese Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, developed expert consensus recommendations for the diagnosis and tre
