BACKGROUND: Observational studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of a fluoroquinolone-based regimen to treat individuals presumed to be infected with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). We sought to assess the feasibility of this approach in an urban setting in South Asia.

BACKGROUND: Assisted partner notification (APN) for HIV was introduced in refugee settlements in West Nile Uganda in 2018 to facilitate testing of sexual partners. Transmission potential and severity of pneumonic plague in Madagascar were assessed. Accounting for reporting delay, the reproduction number was estimated at 1.73. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the usefulness of the JATA (12)-variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) system for identifying the source of Mycobacterium tuberculosis outbreaks. DESIGN; JATA(12)-VNTR genotyping was performed on M. tuberculosis isolates from a total of 206 patients in whom group infection was confirmed by epidemiological studies ("group infection"), as well as from 64 patient clusters in whom group infection was suspected but not confirmed ("non-group infection"). We describe a healthcare worker with a previously positive tuberculin skin test result who developed active tuberculosis. An investigation revealed 280 potential contacts, 3 of whom had positive tuberculin skin test results. Our experience demonstrates the potential benefits of therapy for latent tuberculosis infection as a component of a tuberculosis-control program.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to examine the utility of QuantiFERON TB-2G (QFT) in tuberculosis contact investigations performed by a public health center.
METHODS: Adachi City Public Health Center, Tokyo, started using QFT in its laboratory service in June, 2005. The results of QFT, as well as tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) performed in tuberculosis contact investigations in the 10 month period since then were here analyzed. Management of sex partners is a cornerstone of sexually transmitted infection control in the United States. Face-to-face investigation and notification of exposure of sex partners by public health professionals seems to be the most effective method of ensuring appropriate partner management. However, resources rarely permit such intensive partner management for gonorrhea and chlamydial infection.
