Challenging hierarchies and fostering collaboration: a critical discourse analysis of interprofessional education in healthcare training.

CONTEXT: Interprofessional education (IPE) in health professions training strives to create a future collaborative healthcare workforce for the betterment of patient care. One of the aims of IPE experiences is to challenge healthcare hierarchies, with a focus on fluid leadership among healthcare team members. This promotes improved patient-care experience, as well as addressing patient well-being in a more holistic manner. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to critically analyze the discourse of an interprofessional team of healthcare students following a simulated patient encounter to assess the p

A teamwork response tree model for dyadic agreement-accuracy responses.

Teamwork research increasingly relies on collaborative problem-solving (CPS) tasks to assess how individuals coordinate and integrate knowledge in joint work settings. However, most existing measurement approaches focus on final task accuracy and provide limited insight into the interaction processes that produce collaborative outcomes. Conventional scoring methods typically confound whether team members reach agreement with whether their responses are correct. This study introduces the Teamwork Response Tree (TRTree) model that decomposes dyadic collaborative responses into two linked latent

Applying protection motivation theory to assess collaboration, urban tree risks and storm management in the U.S.

Urban trees are vital components of urban societies and ecosystems, but their management is often contested by diverse and sometimes conflicting goals. As storm frequency and intensity increases, it is important to understand the factors that impact municipal level proactive and reactive storm responses to urban trees including pruning, removal, and emergency procedures. Therefore, we surveyed 920 urban forestry professionals in the Northeastern and Southeastern United States to assess their perceived storm threats, socio-demographic characteristics and whether their affiliated organizations h

European perspectives on pre-hospital interagency collaboration during terrorist incidents: a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Recent international developments have led to increased terrorist activity and intentional violence across Europe. Interagency collaboration has repeatedly been identified as a key challenge in previous scenarios. This study explores the perspectives of European pre-hospital medical providers and law enforcement officers on collaboration during violent incidents, aiming to identify barriers, best practices, and opportunities for improvement. METHODS: Twelve modified focus group interviews (3-8 individuals per group) with embedded polls were conducted online. Deductive coding was p

The "Best of Both Worlds": Building a community-academic partnership for research with legal system-impacted individuals.

Equitable community-academic research partnerships provide an innovative way to advance health outcomes among criminal legal system-impacted individuals. The extant literature lacks accounts that detail the process for developing such partnerships, particularly in community-based (rather than carceral) settings and with community organizations (rather than system actors). This First-Person Account-co-written by members of a research team consisting of academic researchers and community partners, including formerly incarcerated individuals-details opportunities and challenges that emerged throu

Nurses' Roles and Challenges in Interprofessional Home-Based Palliative Care: A Systematic Review of Qualitative Studies.

Home-based palliative care (HBPC) aims to enhance patients' quality of life through holistic and sustainable approach, with nurses acting as key coordinators in interprofessional collaboration. However, their specific roles and the challenges they face remain underexplored. This systematic review aimed to map the role of nurses in interprofessional collaboration in HBPC and identify associated challenges. The review addressed two research questions: "What is the role of nurses in interprofessional collaboration in HBHC?" and "What challenges do nurses face in fulfilling their collaborative rol

Victims of Misfortune are Blamed for Imposing Costs on Others : Testing a Cooperation-Dilemma Factor in Victim-Blame.

In four pre-registered studies, we tested implications from a cooperation model that explains victim-blaming and victim-devaluation as the result of cooperation dilemmas, as a way for people to avoid the costs of helping victims (who seem to be unpromising cooperation partners) without paying the reputational cost of being seen as ungenerous, reluctant cooperators. An implication of this perspective is that, if a victim of misfortune is seen as imposing costs on others by requesting help (as opposed to bearing the costs), they will be seen as persons of low character, avoided as future coopera

Quality improvement collaborative to increase access to caesarean sections: lessons from Bihar, India.

BACKGROUND: Countries with resource-poor health systems have struggled to improve access to and the quality of caesarean section (C-section; CS) for women seeking care in public health facilities. Access to C-section in Bihar State remains very low, while access has increased in many other contexts. METHODS: We used quality improvement (QI) combined with targeted resource management to test and implement changes that were designed to increase C-section delivery. We compared C-section delivery percentages after the interventions across eight intervened (QI) hospitals and between QI hospitals a

Partner-sourced haptic feedback rather than environmental inputs drives coordination improvement in human dyadic collaboration.

Haptic communication is a critical communication channel in physical collaboration. However, most studies focus on simplistic tasks with predetermined solutions, restricting the exploration of collaborative behaviors. In this study, we designed a complex task derived from the classic ball-beam control problem, requiring pairs of participants to collaboratively control an unstable object with internal degrees of freedom. The task's redundant nature allowed diverse strategies and collaboration patterns to emerge. We systematically examined the impact of different sources of haptic feedback, dist

Applying Best Practices from CAPs to a Community-Academic-Corrections Partnership: Academic Partner Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: While correctional systems often function separately from academic and community-based organizations, there is opportunity for mutually beneficial collaborative partnerships to strengthen services and relationships. Community-academic partnerships (CAPs) are a well-established model in implementation science and in scientific literature. Applying best practices for CAPs to a partnership that includes community, academic, and correctional partners could contribute to a stronger partnership with more capacity to improve population health of people who experience incarceration. "We Need To Be at the Table": Collaboration with Lived Experts.

BACKGROUND: The recognition of lived experience as an asset has led to increased involvement of individuals most affected by social or medical conditions in research. OBJECTIVES: This paper presents an example of a LE advisory group that co-conceptualized and executed a knowledge mobilization project on aging and homelessness within three Canadian cities (Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal). METHODS: We established the advisory group, determined the group's priorities and objectives, and fostered community engagement through webinars and in-person events. Enhancing multi-sectoral collaborations for the prevention and control of NCDs in Thailand with a new approach.

BACKGROUND: To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, Thailand must engage in effective multi-sectoral collaboration (MSC). However, implementing MSC in Thailand presents significant challenges. Although Thailand had a 2011-2020 MSC strategic plan for the control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) with the prime minister taking the lead, joined by many non-health ministers, not a single meeting was called over those 10 years. This paper describes the development of a new tool created to enhance MSC between health and non-health sectors in controlling NCDs in Thailand. Stake

Interprofessional identity and motivation towards interprofessional collaboration.

INTRODUCTION: It is unknown whether interprofessional identity is able to explain interprofessional behaviours. Extended professional identity theory provides clues by combining two psychological identity approaches. The aim of this study is to investigate whether interprofessional identity is a source for intrinsic motivation towards interprofessional collaboration related to wider group membership. METHODS: Participants of this double-blinded study were 47 dentistry and 41 dental hygiene students (86.3% response) without interprofessional education (IPE) experience. Group productivity was u

Convergence of undulatory swimming kinematics across a diversity of fishes.

Fishes exhibit an astounding diversity of locomotor behaviors from classic swimming with their body and fins to jumping, flying, walking, and burrowing. Fishes that use their body and caudal fin (BCF) during undulatory swimming have been traditionally divided into modes based on the length of the propulsive body wave and the ratio of head:tail oscillation amplitude: anguilliform, subcarangiform, carangiform, and thunniform. This classification was first proposed based on key morphological traits, such as body stiffness and elongation, to group fishes based on their expected swimming mechanics.

When Lone Wolf Defectors Undermine the Power of the Opt-Out Default.

High levels of cooperation are a central feature of human society, and conditional cooperation has been proposed as one proximal mechanism to support this. The counterforce of free-riding can, however, undermine cooperation and as such a number of external mechanisms have been proposed to ameliorate the effects of free-riding. One such mechanism is setting cooperation as the default (i.e., an opt-out default). We posit, however, that in dynamic settings where people can observe and condition their actions on others' behaviour, 'lone wolf' defectors undermine initial cooperation encouraged by a

The Brandenburg reformed medical curriculum: study locally, work locally.

The Brandenburg Medical School "Theodor Fontane" (MHB) was founded in 2014 by municipal and non-profit institutions in Bernau, Brandenburg an der Havel and Neuruppin to train more physicians for the non-metropolitan region of Brandenburg. Since the 2015 summer term, 48 medical students have been enrolled each year, accepted through the university's own selection process in which the score on the German school-leaving exam (Abitur) and time spent on the waiting list play subordinate roles. Tuition fees can be partially financed through scholarship agreements with regional hospitals if the appli

How widespread is working at scale in English general practice? An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Over the last 5 years, national policy has encouraged general practices to serve populations of >30 000 people (called 'working at scale') by collaborating with other practices. AIM: To describe the number of English general practices working at scale, and their patient populations. DESIGN AND SETTING: Observational study of general practices in England. METHOD: Data published by the NHS on practices' self-reports of working in groups were supplemented with data from reports by various organisations and practice group websites. Practices were categorised by the extent to which t

Moralizing gods, impartiality and religious parochialism across 15 societies.

The emergence of large-scale cooperation during the Holocene remains a central problem in the evolutionary literature. One hypothesis points to culturally evolved beliefs in punishing, interventionist gods that facilitate the extension of cooperative behaviour toward geographically distant co-religionists. Furthermore, another hypothesis points to such mechanisms being constrained to the religious ingroup, possibly at the expense of religious outgroups. To test these hypotheses, we administered two behavioural experiments and a set of interviews to a sample of 2228 participants from 15 diverse
