We present a patient with transient global amnesia (TGA) whose diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) study showed a high-intensity signal in the left retrosplenium of the corpus callosum. In previous studies, lesions in the retrosplenium caused permanent but not transient global amnesia, called retrosplenial amnesia, by involving the thalamocortical portion of the Papez' circuit. This is the first report indicating that TGA can be associated with acute infarction only in the left retrosplenium of the corpus callosum.

Abnormalities of the corpus callosum are often associated with a poor prognosis due to the anatomical defect itself and associated anomalies that include malformations and inherited metabolic disorders. We report a case of the prenatal diagnosis of hypoplasia of the corpus callosum that was associated with non-ketotic hyperglycinemia. Metabolic disorders are a known association with corpus callosum abnormalities and carry a dismal prognosis. A diagnosis of non-ketotic hyperglycinemia should be considered when a fetus presents with an abnormality of the corpus callosum. A literature search revi…

Auditory--verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a characteristic feature of schizophrenia. Patients with AVHs have been found to differ from non-hallucinating patients in volumes of certain asymmetrical brain structures on MRI, and on certain neuropsychological measures. There is also evidence of corpus callosum (CC) abnormalities in schizophrenia, and it has been proposed that abnormalities of inter-hemispheric transmission may underlie hallucinations and other symptoms. The aim of this study was to examine whether patients with AVHs have smaller corpora callosa than those without AVH, and whether …

We followed-up a Japanese man suffering from hereditary spastic paraplegia with a thin corpus callosum (HSP-TCC) by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) using 123IN-isopropyl-piodoamphetamine (123I-IMP) over 4 years (25 to 29 years old). Besides the initial symptoms of lower limb spasticity, mental deterioration slightly progressed and upper limb spasticity and slight cerebellar ataxia were developed, during the period. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an extremely thin corpus callosum and medial frontal atrophy, which remained essentially unchanged during the pe…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a frequent congenital malformation with many etiologies and clinical features. It can occur as an isolated defect which is usually sporadic, it is frequently associated with other malformations, genetic syndromes and metabolic disorders. Ante- or postnatal diagnosis must be followed by a careful search for etiology, and it raises uncertain and difficult question with regard to pregnancy continuation and infant development.

Callosal lesions, associated or not to internal frontal lesions, may produce different types of complex gestural behaviors. Four signs can be identified, each of which has been generally reported separately: the "alien hand" sign, the "diagnostic apraxia", the "wayward hand" and the "callosal apraxia". Some authors justify considering these signs as different entities, while others propose regrouping them either in an unique syndrome--the "alien hand"--or as two syndromes--the "frontal alien hand" and the "callosal alien hand". We present the observation of a patient who presented with the fou

Forty-three patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the corpus callosum treated by embolization were reviewed. The following clinical and radioanatomic characteristics were found: 84% (36 patients) presented with intracranial hemorrhage, 43% (20 nidi) of the lesions were located in the posterior half of the corpus callosum, multiple nidi were more frequent (21%) than expected, 27 nidi (59%) were fed by branches of both the anterior and posterior cerebral arteries, AVMs mainly drained into the internal cerebral vein and/or interhemispheric superficial veins, and 19 (41%) had both dr…

We report an association of trigonocephaly and thumb hypoplasia in a 6.5-year-old boy, diagnosed as Baller-Gerold syndrome. In addition to craniosynostosis and radial limb defect, which are constant in this syndrome, our patient presents two unusual features: the first is an epidermal nevus and the second is an agenesis of the middle portion of corpus callosum. This unique type of callosal agenesis in the context of a polymalformative disorder supports the hypothesis that partial agenesis of corpus callosum may be due to an event occurring before the 12th week gestation with continued developm…

A unique case of a female born with four major malformations, ectrodactyly, diaphragmatic hernia, ventricular septal defect, and agenesis of the corpus callosum is reported. The patient had a normal birth weight, normal head circumference and a normal karyotype. There was no significant facial dysmorphism. The family history was unremarkable for birth defects, recurrent pregnancy loss, limb anomalies or consanguinity. We propose that this represents a new constellation of multiple malformations.

The association between developmental defects of the corpus callosum and major psychiatric disturbance is discussed with a review of published cases. Seven new cases are presented, of which four had clear psychotic symptoms, two receiving a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Of the remainder, one had a developmental disorder affecting social interaction and speech which could be classed as Asperger's syndrome, one had a personality disorder with depressive and conversion symptoms, and the last was an adolescent boy with severe behavioural problems. The difficulties in determining the precise relevanc…

The hypothesis tested was that, in schizophrenia, corpus callosum size would be reduced, particularly in the region responsible for communication between both temporal lobes. This is supported by knowledge of: (a) anatomical homotopicity and functional specialization of fibres within the corpus callosum; (b) evidence linking structural and functional deficits of the corpus callosum and left temporal lobe with schizophrenia; and (c) that temporal lobe neuronal fibres pass through the middle region of the corpus callosum. Brain area and corpus callosum areas, widths and length were measured on m…

The nerve fibres of the corpus callosum were studied by electron microscopy in five elderly patients with progressive subcortical vascular encephalopathy (PSVE) and compared with those in six age-matched controls. The number of nerve fibres per unit area of the corpus callosum was decreased in PSVE by 18-26%. The loss of nerve fibres in the corpus callosum can play a role in inducing the cognitive deficit of PSVE, on the basis of the loss of nerve fibres in the cerebral hemispheres.

A 2-week-old infant who presented with myoclonic encephalopathy had biochemical abnormalities consistent with nonketotic hyperglycinemia. Cranial CT showed agenesis of the corpus callosum, gyral malformation, and ventricular enlargement. Similar brain abnormalities occurred in 9 of 15 previously reported patients. Including this patient, agenesis of the corpus callosum appeared in 6 of 15 patients, gyral malformation in 6 of 14, ventricular enlargement in 5 of 15, and cerebellar hypoplasia in 2 of 16. Nonketotic hyperglycinemia thus joins a growing list of inborn errors of metabolism associate…

Dilation of the posterior horns of the cerebral ventricles may be an early finding of fetal hydrocephalus, but it is also the hallmark of partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. Reported is the first precise prenatal diagnosis of posterior agenesis of the corpus callosum. Accurate diagnosis allows for appropriate obstetric management.
